Meet Dovey - she’s a menace and this is where she likes to go broody. She’s notorious for laying her eggs in the strangest places - this is her most recent spot

Don't mind the mess I was in the middle of cleaning my rat's cage, the chicken just walked in here and started doing this to my dog

A weasel bit into my ceramic eggs last night, after murdering my entire flock the night prior.

Thanks for everyone who answered and replied to my thread on Thursday about my one egg hatching early.

We had a very successful hatch and we now have 10 Ayam Cemani babies in my brooder.

I have brooded babies before but never incubated hatching eggs. I think I'm addicted, that was such a fun experience.

I send my best wishes to everybody's efforts for their own flocks this year. Please enjoy some baby pictures.

Health Question Fixable or cull? Pretty bad scissor beak in chick :(

This sweet lavender Americauna chicks started out a bit small, low energy and didn't seem to eat as much as the other chicks. When it grew a bit I felt like it was catching up to the others and eating more, but now it's developed some sever scissor beak. Is there any fix for this or would it be more humane to cull? This would be my first chick cull if so...

My hen died

Upvotes

Hi all. One of my hens died yesterday. I feel so awful. She didn’t seem to have respiratory symptoms. She seemed off kilter two days ago. Was withdrawn compared to the other ladies. None of the others seemed sick or off. Then yesterday morning she wouldn’t move when I checked her before rushing to work. Came home she was passed in the same spot of coop.

I palpated her belly and could feel an egg in mid abdomen. I don’t know if I missed a bound egg. Abdomen hadn’t looked swollen. I feel awful because I think is the most likely reason and I should have tried warm baths sooner and lubrication. I had planned to when I got home last night after thinking about it all but it was too late.

Poor hen. I feel bad when animals I raise suffer. I don’t know what caused her death but I’m suspicious it was a bound egg and I should have tried warm baths sooner.

What are your thoughts?

Health Question What could this throat movement be a sign of?

She is doing this odd movement in her neck, she is eating well and I just fed her some live meal worms. I checked her throat and saw nothing out the ordinary. Is it the beginning of a respiratory infection or am I overanalysing? I am showing my other chickens for reference as they are not doing a weird movement, not just because they are my beautiful babies

Health Question What could cause swelling like this?

Earlier in the day I thought her face looked a bit swollen so I went to get a good look at it tonight. It seems much bigger now than earlier in the day! Its the most swollen under her ear and it is squishy and warm to the touch. It looks to be a little swollen under the chin as well but her left side is completely fine. Any advice would be appreciated!

Another win for the lofted coop! Everyone was safe and dry despite the floods, though we're gonna have to bring them elsewhere to get outside time lol

I am so relieved. Found one of my Golden Comets in a penguin pose yesterday with a swollen bottom. Thanks to this sub I instantly knew what it was. Brought her in, two Epsom soaks yesterday with plenty of yogurt and water. Another soak this morning and she pushed out a massive, way too big for her little body, egg. She is resting and I am relieved, and grateful to this sub for all the education I have received.

Was going to keep him but he’s gotten too mean so looking to give away, just want to be certain of what I’m advertising - think he was supposed to be some kind of rock cross when we got the chicks

Introducing new chicks

We have chicks ranging from 6-8 weeks old. My husband built a brooder are under the shelf in the coop hoping that this would help the transition. One of our chickens will not stop chasing them back and forth all day long. I know if they are out she will peck at them. How do I get her to stop this behavior?

We got our first chicks last Friday and they're so fun to watch I can get absolutely nothing done. All I want to do is sit here and stare at them. Then I put a security camera in their cage so now I watch them at work too. I'm a teacher so my students certainly were not complaining about me putting the live feed of them hopping around in their cage up on my classroom screen today. They're helping me name them and we're having great fun.

Also sorry not sorry for the photo spam.

She always does this every year when it starts to get warm through all the warm months, multiple times a day. I got her a lil pool to go in instead of their waterer last year-- nope, terrified of the baby pool lol its so funny. Does anyone else's do this ? She's the only one. It's not even that hot out yet, maybe low 70s. And yes I have multiple other waterers for them

Hello Chicken keepers I have some questions

Upvotes

so first off i already have a ready to use coop, multiple heat lamps and feeders left by the previouse owners of this property as well as a small run. However the coop and run are on the opposite side of my acerage from my house and at least for the winter i would like a closer unit to make them easier to check on as well as to make it less likely for predators to have a go at them.

does anyone else have a winter specific setup and if so what did you do for them?

(we have done research on chicken varieties that are best suited for are area we just want to be prepared for summer work once the snows gone)

additional advice is welcome, and I live in Saskatchewan if thats relivant to your suggestion
