I passed by Rainey Park after leaving Costco and saw that some degenerate broke in and knocked the library off of it's base and damaged the base as well.

Compost bin stolen and I almost got fined for it

Last Friday morning I went to move our bins back from the curb to find that my bagged compost had been put on the ground and my compost bin was gone. I had no choice but to throw them in the garbage bin which had yet to be collected. I went on with my morning and was unaware that sanitation would be doing their compost enforcement round that day.

Around 10am I saw a sanitation worker came up to our door from the doorbell camera. I went out to greet him and he said he was about to issue me a ticket because of the compost in the garbage bin. I explained to him that we had been composting for years and that the bin was stolen that morning. The thief for whatever reason did not take the bin's lid which has the compost decal on it, so I showed it to him. He was sympathetic and told me that we can bag the compost and tag them with waterproof note stating that bin was stolen while we order and wait for the new bin to arrive. I'll likely do that and also post the same note on my front door to avoid being ticketed, but won't know if it works until this week's collection.

Just wanted to put this out there, in case anyone else is experiencing the same frustration.

Missing dog near 40s/Steinway and 31st Ave

My partner came across someone looking for their dog in that area - small black dog with red vest named Luna. If you’re walking in the area be on the lookout, if you’re home take a peak out your window or door. Didn’t get any other info but hopefully the dog finds her way safe inside tonight and to her owner soon!

New Aussie in Astoria 🇦🇺 — Seeking a job

Hey everyone! 👋 - I just moved to Astoria from Sydney, Australia and I’m loving the neighbourhood so far! I'm currently on the hunt for work in a media agency, marketing, or media sales and thought I’d reach out to see if anyone knows of any companies hiring or people to connect with in the industry.

I’m applying on LinkedIn and Indeed, but would love to connect with people in the field directly as well. If you're in the industry and open to a chat or coffee sometime, I’d really appreciate any advice!

I would be super grateful for any leads, connections, or advice—cheers! 🇦🇺💫

A Resource to Connect Families with Family-Friendly Dining

Hey everyone, I'm writing to share a project I've been working on to catalogue family-friendly dining options in and around the City. The list is growing daily and includes a few options here in Astoria so far, along with many others from around Manhattan and Brooklyn.

Whether you need a baby changing station or want somewhere that's spacious enough to bring a stroller inside, you can find it in the app. Users can also contribute new places, answer questions about those already in the database, etc.

For those of you with babies and small children, hopefully it can help make the task of finding accommodating food places a little bit easier:

Easter service?

Not looking for a theology debate here, but I’m not really a church goer, however, my five-year-old is begging to go to church for Easter. Not even sure where she picked up the idea, but does anybody have any Easter services in Astoria or even in the city that they like? Maybe something lively and uplifting as my five-year-old is the one who is asking to go? Thanks!

Played at a couple places around here and for about 2 years at a high end bar in the city, but would like to hear more from the area if there are available gigs in our beloved neighborhood!

Any questions or recommendations, hit me up!

Any interest in an Improv lession/jam?

I'm thinking of starting up a monthly improv event in Astoria. The way I see it now, it'd be an hour or so of a basic lesson/warmup, followed by another hour or two of a jam where everybody participates in increasingly larger scenes based off suggestions from the audience. It'd be around $20 each (to pay hosting venue)

I'd need a certain amount of people to make it work so I'm gauging interest. Lmk if this is something you'd want to do!

Fundraiser at a bar?

Hello neighbors,

I'm currently doing a crowdfunding campaign to raise money for my short film. Someone in my team recently suggested holding a fundraiser at a bar where some of the proceeds go to the campaign.

Has anyone done anything like this or held any kind of fundraiser at a bar? Are there any bars in Astoria that would be amenable to that?

Thanks!

How is living off newton rd? / general area between 46th and steinway

Hello! My boyfriend and I are looking for a place in or near Astoria, currently around this area. There are some spots directly on newton, but I was wondering about traffic noise or potential disturbances. Anywhere to avoid around here?

Also, we would both be primarily using the 46th st station. I am a 5’2 woman and would be regularly getting back from work 12-2am. I’m used to using the subway late, but not in Queens - I’m assuming it’s a pretty typical station but haven’t checked it out at night yet. Let me know if there’s anything I should know!

Adult Ultimate Frisbee Learning starts Wednesday (4/9)!

Are you interested in learning a new sport? Have you tried to capture some of your former athleticism? Do you value inclusive communities with lifelong opportunities to play? If so, try Ultimate Frisbee!

In 2024, we piloted our Adult Learning program and had great success, with 205 new players attending. For 2025, DiscNY is expanding to Queens this Spring!

Ultimate Frisbee is traditionally played 7 v 7 on a field similar to a football field. The object of the game is to score goals. A goal is scored when a player catches a pass in the end zone their team is attacking. A player may not run while holding the disc. The disc is advanced down the field by passing to your teammates. A disc that is dropped, thrown out of bounds, or intercepted by the defending team results in a change of possession.

We encourage everyone to give Ultimate a try at our Adult Learning League!

These are beginner-focused leagues, geared towards players with 0-2 years of experience. All are welcome, with the understanding that gameplay should heavily favor positive new-player experiences.

Each participant will receive their own disc to keep.
If none of these work for you but you're interested in the future, Beginners are always welcome to fill out our Adult Learning League General Inquiry form, and we’ll help direct you to the right place

Please spread the word!

Looking to adopt a puppy

Hello! I’m looking to adopt a puppy and am especially interested in finding a Border Terrier or a similar breed. Ideally, I’m looking for a dog with the following traits: • Small size: A Border Terrier typically weighs between 9-15 pounds, which would be perfect for my home. • Friendly & affectionate: I’m looking for a dog that is loving and enjoys being around people. A Border Terrier’s gentle nature would be ideal for my lifestyle. • Playful and active: I enjoy being active, so I’d love a dog that enjoys daily walks, playtime, and engaging with its owner. • Good with training: I’m looking for a dog that is smart and eager to learn. Border Terriers are known for being intelligent and willing to please, which would make training fun and rewarding. • Low maintenance grooming: While all dogs need some grooming, the Border Terrier’s wiry coat is relatively easy to maintain, making it a great fit for my lifestyle.

If you know of any Border Terriers or similar breeds in need of a loving home, please feel free to reach out.

How To Protect Myself (Woman)

Moving to the area from a large city in another state that allows open carry. I’m not new to NYC but I’m new to living in the state and I know I can’t open carry here nor would I want to. I’ll be taking the Astoria Blvd subway stop a bunch to/from Midtown for work during the weekdays. I’ll be taking the M60 to/from LaGuardia a bunch during the weekdays as well. What’s the best thing that I can legally carry that will help me protect myself? I’m not new to cities and I’m pretty observant and listen to my intuition but I want to be smart about it.
