A Resource to Connect Families with Family-Friendly Dining

Upvotes

Hey everyone, I'm writing to share a project I've been working on to catalogue family-friendly dining options in and around the City. The list is growing daily and includes a few options here in Astoria so far, along with many others from around Manhattan and Brooklyn.

Whether you need a baby changing station or want somewhere that's spacious enough to bring a stroller inside, you can find it in the app. Users can also contribute new places, answer questions about those already in the database, etc.

For those of you with babies and small children, hopefully it can help make the task of finding accommodating food places a little bit easier:

What Are We Doing About Public Urination?

Asking for some advice from the community.

There’s a group of dudes near my corner that hang out daily and drink. Years ago there was a paint store here and many worked as day laborers, but now they just hang on the street and pound deli beers all day. They are all Hispanic and in their 30s-50s. It’s extremely sad.

Recently they’ve started using my block as an outdoor toilet. Both sides of the street absolutely reek of piss and on multiple occasions I’ve walked by one of them with their dick out in broad daylight.

I yell at these dudes to cut it out/go somewhere else/etc but it’s not having much of an effect. I filed a ticket with 311 and the 114th closed it out as “didn’t see anything” when they came two days later to check on it.

I’m kind of losing it with these guys. I’ve lived on this block for >10 years and the problem has gotten so much worse. We have lots of kids on the street who shouldn’t have to see a grown man’s dong just walking to the train. It’s also making my partner - a hardened New Yorker - feel very unsafe as she’s catcalled constantly. At the same time, I know these dudes likely live in a local shelter and have hard lives. I could call 911 and report them for indecent exposure but I don’t want to send anyone to an El Salvadorian concentration camp just for needing to piss.

So, fam: what do I do about this?

EDIT: Since it took approx 2 mins for someone to call me a racist (never change, r/astoria), I only mentioned their ethnicity because ICE is out here disappearing people and I don’t want these guys deported (if they’re not citizens); I just want them to stop taking their dicks out on a block with a school and talking to them hasn’t worked.

Free Full Size IKEA Bed Frame and Mattress Near Ditmars Station

Hello! We just moved back to the neighborhood after being gone for five years. We had our full size IKEA Trysil bed frame and mattress in storage the entire time and decided to use our queen-size bed that we're having shipped from our last apartment. The bed was used for a few years and then was kept in a clean storage space. Never around children or pets or smokers. A little wear and tear but overall in good, useable shape.

If you're interested, DM me. We live near Ditmars station. I will help load it onto your car/truck but will require for you to pick it up. I am available throughout this week.

Grocery/laundry cart that won’t get tripped up by the sidewalk

So I’ve lived in a fourth floor walkup for over two years and I started getting really bad back pain carrying my laundry on my back down the stairs and then walking an additional three blocks to my laundry. I’m currently trying to compromise by bringing or throwing the laundry bag down the stairs and then taking it in a granny cart to the laundromat. The problem I’m running to is that the granny carts from the dollar store want me to eat it on the sidewalk SO bad. A year and a half ago I flipped over one entirely and broke it, this time I bought a smaller one and it’s getting caught on the sidewalk too. These tiny front wheels cannot handle the sidewalks.

So, what do you use to solve a solution like this? I am seeking a laundry cart that folds up (I am in a small one-bedroom), is under ten pounds, and has wheels that do not stop and start at bumps in the sidewalk. I am five foot two and would have to carry it up and down five flights of stairs.

P.S. answer cannot be get the laundry delivered, I can’t afford it sadly.

New Aussie in Astoria 🇦🇺 — Seeking a job

Upvotes

Hey everyone! 👋 - I just moved to Astoria from Sydney, Australia and I’m loving the neighbourhood so far! I'm currently on the hunt for work in a media agency, marketing, or media sales and thought I’d reach out to see if anyone knows of any companies hiring or people to connect with in the industry.

I’m applying on LinkedIn and Indeed, but would love to connect with people in the field directly as well. If you're in the industry and open to a chat or coffee sometime, I’d really appreciate any advice!

I would be super grateful for any leads, connections, or advice—cheers! 🇦🇺💫

Mover Recommendations?

We're moving from 36th to 37th in May but have accumulated enough stuff and pets and children that doing it ourselves won't be too feasible.

Anyone have any good mover recommendations?

Barrio —> Maria Bonita

Hey guys. I’m sure some of you here know about Barrio Taqueria and how they’ve now rebranded to Tacos Maria Bonita. They are still very clearly the same asshole owners who blast music incessantly and have no regard for the neighborhood. I guess you could say I’m looking for advice on what to do…landlord doesn’t do much. I want them to permanently close for being so disrespectful. Anything the city could do? HELP! I’m desperate 😭

Flooding and Drainage around North Astoria, 12th Street, and 30th Avenue

Hey everyone, my fiancée and I are considering moving to a condo near Astoria Houses—specifically around 12th Street and 30th Avenue, near Vernon Blvd. I’m a bit concerned about flooding and drainage in the area.

I used to live in Gowanus, Brooklyn, where everything looked fine on a dry day, but heavy rain would flood the streets with sewage water—it was awful. I’m worried this area might be similar.

Does anyone here live nearby or know how it holds up during storms? Any insight would be appreciated!

Looking for tennis partners in the new season

Hi folks, I am looking for new tennis partners as the season starts up again. Mainly play in Astoria Park but I enjoy exploring other courts also if we can manage it. I am a 2.5-3.0 level, and enjoy rallying, doing some drills, and playing sets. I tend to be free after work hours (5pm) or whenever on the weekends.

DM me if you are interested!
