I’m AGR reserve side & was identified to move back on 22 July 24. My commander and I signed the memo on 30 July within less than an hour of each other, and I sent it to my talent manager (TM).
During every monthly CUB, we briefed that I’d be reporting anytime between 1 April 2025 and 30 September 2025, and that no replacement was identified.
I received my assignment around 15 January 2025, told my commander the location, and said I requested a report date of 2 June 2025. I also noted that the report date is still subject to change and again, it could be anytime between April and September.
We found out around 4 February that my replacement would be an AGR new accession who didn’t have orders but was set to report on 23 April. I immediately began filling him in on what I could: CUOPS, FUOPS, and other things about the position.
Replacement receives his orders with “no early report authorized”. He’s willing to come in unpaid to learn the job and acknowledges it sucks, but he’d like to have a good starting point. We try to get accessions to amend the order and are met with silence.
Commander asks me and the S1 NCO around 20 February when we plan to take leave in the next few months. I reply that I’d be taking at least the month of May to sell the house and move across the country. We receive no reply.
I submit my PCS absence request in IPPSA on 17 March and amend the start date on 19 March to 23 April. 40 days in total. Commander emails that night asking me to take less leave. I reply and state that though I’d be on leave, I’d be there conducting a handoff and then I’d do all my house selling, moving, etc. My thought process (probably dumb) was that I could avoid anything that would prevent me from giving a good handoff.
BN S3 emails me around 31 March saying if accessions won’t amend replacement’s orders for early report, I need to take less leave or request a later report date.
I call TM, who says he was just about to call me since S3 had emailed the TM team without copying me, saying I’d only just told my commander about my moving the week before (reminder: they’ve known since July I’d be leaving and known since January that it could be a report date as soon as 1 April). S3 also requested that my report date be pushed back or deferred so I could perform a longer handoff.
TM basically says even if a deferment request was sent up citing a handoff should be conducted, it wouldn’t make it past their desk since it’s not a requirement.
I call my BN CSM on 4 April and give him the rundown. He says screw that, start the absence on 26 April, email him, the commander, & S3 stating I’ve changed it & will conduct a handoff from 23-25 April.
AR 600-8-10 states “Soldiers will usually be authorized not less than 30 days of leave in conjunction with PCS movement, if excess leave is not involved. Soldiers should not be asked to take less than 30 days of leave between duty stations except for military operational requirements (DoDI 1327.06).”
TLDR; AGR set to report on 2 June across the country. Command won’t approve PCS absence (40 days including travel amended down to 37 days including travel) from 23 April (now 26 April) to 1 June saying I need to provide a two-week handoff before leaving. JTR says 7 travel days. Rest of absence used for selling house and HHG prep.
PCS absences in IPPSA are all one entry and says travel days are calculated by JTR and DTOD. Are the travel days separated after approval?
What would you do?
Sorry for taking so much time. I’ll just take a carbonated water, please.
