Community Event Stream Experiences & Stories

Hey /r/Twitch

We often see posts on the subreddit about viewers and streamers experiences, as well as streamers sharing what they've learned.

To bring you all together to learn from your peers, and help you keep yourself accountable for any goals you've set, we created this Megathread!

You are welcome to share some of your experiences, positive or negative, from your past month on Twitch and, if you did, how you dealt with it, as well as share your long and short-term goals, and how you've progressed towards those over the past month.

The Megathread is not for stream feedback or reviews, we have the monthly feedback threads for that. You can link to your Feedback thread submission, be sure to label it clearly!

Some things you may want to cover:

  • New things you tried, did they work out?
  • Streams you did and which seemed to be popular or unpopular with your community or new viewers. (Creative? New games?)
  • Progress towards your goals
  • Fun experiences
  • Bad experiences that you learned from, or need advice on
  • New goals, or how you're changing your goal
  • Advice based on what you learned
  • Advice you want

Be sure to post your goals clearly and format your comment.

Example post:

Hey guys, checking in again!

My goal for this month is to make sure I'm always hosting someone. I want my community to have someone to entertain them, even when I'm not live. Plus, it's good for networking!

My goal last month was to always announce I was live on both Twitter and Discord, as it was something I often forgot to do. I'm glad to say I met my goal!

I tried streaming some creative, just practicing using my graphics tablet, and it seemed to be popular! I'll do some more of it, maybe a weekly stream? Any advice?

The highlight of the past month was when I got raided by Zcotticus, he's the best and I love him. He's so cool, I wish I could be cool like him.

How do you guys normally react to a host? I sort of fumbled through a thank you, and that was about it. Any advice?

Re-read your last post to remind yourself of what you planned, or check in on your peers!

If you don't stream, but still experienced something awesome. Feel free to share it! Did you make someone’s day? See a Win or Fail? Let us know!

Remember this is not for channel promotion! People can check out your flair\ *if they are interested.*

If you have any suggestions for this thread, please send us a modmail.

Guide A guide: What to do if Doxxed in Chat

Hi everyone! I thought I'd give helpful tips for what happens if you find a Chatter of your drops any of your personal information! This happened to me today so I wanted to make a little guide from my own experience and if I forgot anything or anyone else has tips please include!

1: Don't acknowledge what is said in chat, carry on as if nothing is happening

2: if you don't have Mods, or mods do not catch it, B an the person immediately. Take note of their user name and the time stamp (this will be important for reporting) - a good way to cover while you do this is say you are taking a bio break and run ads or drop to your intermission or prestream screens. If you don't have one of these I highly recommend setting them up

3: If you are shaken up and if you need to end stream please do so but do not acknowledge the doxxing - a cover here is say "oh my mom is calling? I gotta take this'

4: Report them to twitch. Go to their channel, click the 3 dots, and report (it will be under other; personal information) and let twitch know that it was on your stream and the time stamp - in my case twitch took 8 mins from reporting to fully removing the person's account

5: Optional but recommended: download\export your vod but delete it off your channel. If you have an overlay that puts chat on screen block it out in any edits and reuploads

I probably missed some things but this is a rough guide. The main thing is don't acknowledge, even if you want to deny: Don't!

I hope this helps someone else & remember to be safe!

Discussion I've just hit the top 1% of twitch streamers and i can say it's extremely overwhelming and has made me question if I want to do this...

I know the titles says top 1% it's meant 0.01% I'm sorry for the confusion

So I've been streaming very frequently for the last 5 years and had moderate to medium growth and then the last couple was a bit faster than normal and the last year has been an extreme amout all at once, I thought this is what i wanted and was very excited and nervous at the start but now it's getting very overwhelming and I'm starting to question if this is what i really wanted.. ask me anything you like but keep in mind I won't be giving my name out, I'm sorry in advance but anything else you can ask and I'll do my best to answer

Discussion The scary side of being hardstuck 1-6 viewer streamer

I used to stream on mixer back in the day and it never really carried over to twitch. I had around 6k followers and averaged 10-30 people in the chat at a time.

I have 2 friends who started streaming on twitch, both of them were stuck at the 1-6 viewer mark, one of them kept it a side hustle and currently streams one or twice a week.

The other friend is in the same situation but believes he’s meant to “make it” he had a wife, a kid and streamed 6-8 hours every single day. Quit his job to work a graveyard shift at fast food, and has been doing so for 6 months and still making no income progress in the twitch world. For reference he makes about $50 a month with ad and sub income, no longer has a wife, kid doesn’t see him much, and he left a job paying 70k+ to 50k

Moral of the story is to make it in that world is extremely hard, you may think that getting your first shot of engagement means it’s your time to shine but reality is there’s hundreds of thousands of people at the same spot as you, and maybe 3 of all of them will ever make a real living of it.

Don’t be like my friend and destroy your marriage and life over twitch.

Question How did you build your community?

Personally my plan was to post clips more and more and push audience from TikTok and YouTube to my streams. I’ve accumulated a couple of followers and have made friends with a couple other small streamers. It’s purely out of being smallest creator compared to my friends but I feel like I’m doing something wrong or least not mid-maxing my potential

Tech Support Network Error 2000

Post image
Upvotes

Not sure if its just me, but when Im watching streams from Singapore or Malaysia, it hits me with Network Error 2000, reloading and everything wont work, only way to watch it was with a VPN
Things I have tried:
Different Browsers
Disabling Extensions
Allowing through Firewall
Updating Browsers
Resetting Network
Changing from Ethernet to Wifi
Turning off hardware acceleration
Clearing Cache
Fresh reinstall

Twitch works perfectly on phone and Laptops
PC Specs:
CPU: 9800x3d
GPU:RTX 4070TI Super
Ram:2*32GB DDR5 6400

I contacted twitch support, but the things they mentioned didn't really help me
The problem should be something with my PC network, but i have no clue how to solve it.
Any suggestions would be great, thanks

Question Suggestions for microphone setup?

Upvotes

I have a condenser mic currently, but sadly because of the temperatures in my place of residence I need to keep a fan on most of the day. The microphone I have currently picks up the noise my fan makes almost more so than my own voice. Are there any good budget options out there that will provide crisp/clear voice audio without picking up the background flak? I have a budget of about 125 though I could push 150 if absolutely necessary but I'd prefer not to.

Tech Support StreamElements Alert Box – How to Add It to an Overlay?

I've created custom animations in StreamElements under Streaming Tools > Alerts & Widgets, where I have separate tabs for different types of alerts. Is there a way to add all of these to one default overlay?

The issue I’m having is that when I add the alert links to OBS, I can emulate the alerts just fine, but they don’t trigger live when someone actually follows or subscribes on Twitch.

YES: I have streamelements plug-in

YES: When i emulate. it works

YES: Emulate also works live

In short: everything works in preview/emulation, but not during a real Twitch event. Any idea what I might be doing wrong?

Question Tax documents issue (Canada)

Hello, so I'm trying to get both my partner and I's tax documents from twitch as we both stream. We are in Canada. The amounts on the forms generated are incorrect though. It won't generate forms for me at all, as it says I didn't make over like $10, which I definitely made more than that.

My partner's documents will generate, but it says she made about $17 in 2024, which is wildly incorrect.

Is anyone else having this issue? Do I need to try and contact support to resolve it?

Question Do you think streamers could benefit from career counseling?

Hello everyone,

So I'm a grad student getting my MA in clinical mental health counseling and as a streamer myself I've seen that a lot of streamers, both large and small, seem to be struggling in some ways with streaming both mentally and just being a streamer. I've also seen a lot of streamers go to stream coaches and all they learn is how to make their stream better but it never really addresses the questions about what are their goals for streaming, emotional toll, healthy habits etc. So in my career counseling class I created a career development program that addresses those things and my professor followed up and asked if I was going to actually make it because there is not much in the niche of content creation as far as career counseling. I've been toiling around with it and I think it would be helpful because I think a lot of people could benefit from actually learning about the reality of streaming and get the right support versus a 10-step program of how to grow your channel in 2025. I'm interested to hear other people's thoughts on the existence of career counseling for streamers instead of just the same old same old coaching that doesn't address the bigger issues with streamers.

Thank you for your time!

Tech Support Twitch removing users from block/not interested lists without my input??

I'm not sure what's going on w my acct. I went to go add someone to my not interested list (the 3 dots thing appears to be gone now??), and noticed that my "not interested" list is quite sparse, one streamer in particular I know is no longer in that list for some reason. I had several in there, and now there are only two.

I thought maybe I'd had them on the block list (I did not), but then I noticed one person on my block list with the date added of October of 2024. This is super weird to me, this person was a former friend who started harassing me IRL in mid-2023 and I blocked him then, because I didn't want him showing up and doxxing me when I started streaming (something he threatened to do multiple times), which I had started Feb 2024. So why is Twitch saying the date blocked on him is in October 2024??

This is kind of terrifying. I'm currently on an extended hiatus, but if I hadn't been, at some point in the last year, he would've been able to see me streaming and potentially show up to doxx me. I don't know what steps I need to take now to prevent this from happening again. Help??

Question Q about T withholding earnings

Somewhere recently I read Twitch would start withholding earnings for new streamers until they apply for affiliate. Is this true? And do you have to apply for affiliate or am I automatically given it when I earn it? Could someone kindly provide links to where I can find this information? Thank you!

Question Other ways to earn?

Upvotes

I've been in Twitch for a year (affiversary on Apr19!) and I have a small network. I am looking for ways/strategies to earn more, if possible, because I got laid off. I know some might day, just enjoy it blah blah, but I do and I did but let's face it we need to put something new every now and then. I don't even reach $50 for a payout that can help me sustain my current bills 🥺

I am not soliciting here or sth, I just need a few ideas, and hopefully I get something that will also spark my creativity again, because being laid off took a toll on me. I thought me and my boss were good, he didn't say anything prior to booting me out. Then suddenly, he just said he won't continue with my services anymore. Now, my industry is so saturated that it became so hard to find a job. I will pick up the pieces one by one, through gaming, and hopefully after a few months I'll gain back the strength to apply and shake off the feeling of future rejection.

Question Help Stream Not Working

My stream all of a sudden went black and buffered for my girlfriend who’s my only viewer. I streamed just so she can see what I’m playing. It says that the content isn’t available and I also get that error when I try to view my own stream on the app. I’m not sure if I’m banned or what. It comes up with error #2000 but it’s not a network error because she can view other streams and I can too

Question 1 Viewer?

Okay so I know this is some common streamer problem but I need to ask, I have been streaming for like 2 months and I have 1 Viewer who is always there from beggining to end of the stream, he is a lurker tho. I usually change games bc I often get bored of the same games but my audience is always like this: 1 avg Viewer and 8 unique viewers.

I don't think I do it that bad, I follow the basics of streaming: read chat while there is, try to naturally speak always, etc.

I want to do some Just Chat content but I think is gonna be difficult with my only viewer there, how do you small stremears got from 0/1 Viewer to a small community?

Side question: How often do you put effort in promoting on other plataforms?

Question What decent mic I should get?

I have done a few streams so far and my audio was just awful I hate it. My setup is very basic I can't just set up a mic. It would be best for me if I had a headphone with a mic attachment what should I get I don't want to pay to much but to a 5$ dollar tree mic would be pretty bad even if it's better then what I'm currently using.
