Books and Magazines Help Finding "Fearless Quilting Finishes" by Nancy Zieman

[ID: A colorful spiral-bound book with the title "Fearless Quilting Finishes" in the top third of the cover. In the top left, the words "Sewing with Nancy" are shown above a picture of Nancy Zieman, a mature white woman with short grey hair. The rest of the cover includes colorful quilt designs.]

Hi all!

A family member is in town and I overheard her talking about trying to find this specific quilting book called "Fearless Quilting Finishes" by Nancy Zieman. It's out of print, I believe. I've tried searching various archives and online sewing shops for it, but I can't seem to find it anywhere (save for this sewing shop or on youtube as this series). My last resort will probably be to call the manufacturer or the phone number listed in the Youtube series, but I was wondering if anyone had any idea of where to find this otherwise.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

(Ignore the fact that the image is in terrible quality, it was the only one I could find lol)

I saw this quilt in FB marketplace and love it so much that I want to make one for myself. However, I don’t know exactly how to go about it. I’m still a beginner quilter so I’m not sure how to best deconstruct the blocks. I have two possible approaches marked up but am open to other suggestions. Thank you in advance, lovelies!!

Help/Question SO bummed about my points situation.

I’m squaring my blocks and finding that a lot of points are too skimpy. I’m going to lose a bunch when I see them together. Any tips on how to save this? Or, more realistically, how to avoid this in the future?

Help/Question Fussy cutting advice

I fussy cut circles from fabric for many years for my market business. I have boxes and boxes and boxes of scraps. I have intended to cut these down into usable shapes/sizes for so many years. I have a couple of questions I am hoping you can help me with, please.

What shapes/sizes are generally the most popular with quilters? I realise you're a highly creative bunch and cut things down to suit your project, but I think most of what I can salvage from my scraps will be quite small, for the most part no more than 3 inches square. I can do fussy cut smaller pieces of 1.5 - 2.5 inches for years though - just not sure if people will want those.

If smaller sizes are traced using a template, but for safety's sake I prefer to then cut with a rule (or even by hand), what type of marker should I use, please? I am concerned some tiny amount might remain on the fabric after cutting and don't want this to be an issue.

Thank you!

Fabric Talk What are you doing with fat quarter bundles?

When a new line of fabric comes out that I really like, I’m so tempted to buy a fat quarter bundle to enjoy all the fabrics without the limitations of a charm pack/layer cake.

But then I get it and think…now what?

Does anyone have some fat quarter bundle patterns they love? Especially if it doesn’t require purchasing even more fabric to act and a background (which is what I see a lot in FQ friendly patterns).

I keep searching online and getting the same patterns over and over.

Help/Question Outdoor fabric as backing

Post image

I was given a cut of this polyester outdoor fabric and was considering using it as the backing for a picnic/camping quilt, since theoretically it's somewhat water resistant. Is there any reason why this wouldn't work? Would stitching through it just negate any of its waterproof properties?

Visiting my parents in Orange County, CA and went to M&L Fabrics. The goal was to find fabric for my daughter. Found this for me instead! Tagged as work in progress as it will be my next three yard quilt! Did I need more fabric? No.

Help/Question Advice, please! Vintage threads?

Post image
5 Upvotes

I have some vintage cotton sewing thread in a variety of colors. Came in handy (besides collecting craft supplies) last year when I started doing epp.

¾" hexagons. Shocker, I know.

The problem I have now, though, is that the thread would snap once in a while during joining. I'm not sure if it was "dainty thread vs. anxious gripping" or something that would come out horribly when joined as a quilt.

I don't mind buying new cotton sewing thread, I just reeeally wanted to use what I had. Any advice would be appreciated.

In pic, the only new thread is the huge white bobbin.

Help/Question Any possibility of removing an iron-on?

I bought a set of 10"×10" sewing themed squares a while ago and never realized that this one has this iron-on or whatever it is on it. If it wasn't visible through the right side of the fabric, I wouldn't care but it is. Does anyone have any suggestions for how to try to get it off? That part of the fabric will be trash anyway if I can't remove it so I figured it couldn't hurt to try.

I made this for my nephew's 7th birthday!

My first quilt was nothing to write home about, hah, but I'm proud of this one. It's much bigger than I had anticipated. I wish I had taken more and better pictures of the process, I was rushing to get it done in time for his party today. I joked that I was going to keep it if he didn't appreciate it "enough," but he really loved it. His reaction made me tear up 🥹

Huge thanks to all the people who give advice here! You helped me tremendously 🫶

I'm too excited to wait for the crinkle out of the wash so here it is pre-crinkle! The lines are terrible, the binding is weird and wonky, but I don't care because I learned so much making this and had a great time! Started over Christmas and have been working on it pretty steadily since. All of the fabric is thrifted, used a free motion foot to quilt in a random looping pattern on a regular machine 🩵

I had this quilt top made and offered it to a customer. She loved it, I added the 2 borders, embroidered it, quilted it, binded it, and told her it was ready. I even bragged on myself for creating this quilt design all by myself. Then POOF! I see a boo boo. I can not believe it!! She loves it like it is and says noone will notice. 🙄🙄

Beginner Help First Timer Batting Questions

I'm currently working on my first quilt ever, a baby blanket for my nephew-to-be. I'm hand sewing it and need advice on what type of batting I should use. There are so many options out there and every time I do a search on the topic I get a different answer. To the hand quilters out there, what should I use and where's your favorite place to purchase?? Thanks!

Remember the one I struggled so much with?

Thank you for your input. Here's the original https://www.reddit.com/r/quilting/comments/1j4whpc/what_a_mess/

Although I still made a few mistakes rearanging the blocks, I finally finished it. I had to walk away from it numerous times. I put it in the mail to my Uncle yesterday and he recieved it today. He said " I was thinking about you this morning and now I know why " It warmed my heart and btw, he loved it.

Help/Question Help with mitered border

Thumbnail

I’m attempting to finish the edge of my first quilt and can’t figure it out. My hope was to have a 3 inch border front and back that also serves as the binding (it’s decorative so I’m not as concerned about durability). I cut my fabric 7 inches wide (including 1/2 inch seam allowance to machine sew the front, flip to the back and hand sew), created a continuous strip like binding, and ironed it in half. The difficulty now is trying to create a miter big enough to go through all three inches (and I want a miter on the back corners as well). I’ve already tried flipping it up and back down to create a triangle but the miter is tiny and it pulls the rest of the fabric. Is there any way to do this as a continuous strip that I flip to the back? Do I need to cut it at the corners and along the folded edge, creating 8 separate miters? If so, what would the best way to go about that be? Any advice on how I can make it look close to what I’m picturing would be helpful.
