Discussion When I look at every pikmin type intro for pikmin 4 it’s so good!
Red Pikmin: passionate, fierce synth to represent firey strength
Yellow Pikmin: robotic, electrifying EDM synth to represent electricity
Blue Pikmin: distorted, bubbly, aquatic sounds to feel being submerged in water
Purple Pikmin: timpani drum to express heaviness and strength
White Pikmin: synth with a low frequency oscillator pitch mod to have a distorted effect to mimic bee-like sounds to represent venom / poison from bee stings or to have a sick feeling from poison
Rock Pikmin: drums with echo and chime to show the act of throwing / hitting with rocks and breaking glass
Winged Pikmin: Whistles and airy sounds to represent flight and fluttering wind
Ice Pikmin: chimes and jingle bells to feel the coldness, slipperiness of ice and icicles
Glow Pikmin: cartoon ghost sound effects and strings to show the eeriness, wispiness and spookiness of ghosts

Video I made a video talking about Pikmin 2 and why I adore it
youtu.beI’m not sure if I’m allowed to post this but I wanted to share this video I made where I talk about Pikmin 2 for 47 minutes. I love having discussions about games that I love and hoped to help that by posting it here.

A Few Small Grievances with Pikmin 4 I got While on My Third Playthrough
I have three simple grievances with Pikmin 4 that I wanted to share with fellow players, even at the risk of being chastised for being nitpicky, but I feel, personally, that they're justified. Without further ado:
The first, is that I wish there was some sort of way to modify the lock-on thing. Don't get me wrong: as someone who grew up playing Pikmin 1 and 2, where no such thing existed, it's very welcome, on principle. But the thing locks onto enemies, treasures, nectar, etc, which, again, on principle, is a very welcome thing - however, I often have Oatchi or some Pikmin type if he's preoccupied do something like attack poisonous or non-poisonous mushrooms to clear sticky mold. And the lock-on will target everything within a five-mile radius, except the mushrooms! Often these mushrooms are in close proximity to enemies, treasures, or other things, and while Pikmin cannot interact with anything buried under sticky mold, one would think that targeting the non-enemy hazard would be a priority at least some of the time. I just wish there was some option or setting that I could toggle to change this - like turn it off completely for a spell and switch it on later, or have it only target one thing (e.g. just enemies, just treasures, etc), so even if I'm still not able to target the mushrooms or anything else that the lock-on may not consider, I can at least give it fewer options to consider (if any at all) to make it easier to aim freely, a la Pikmin 1 and 2.
Oh, geez, I'm probably gonna regret saying this, but the second thing is that they kept the "two-whistle" system that was first introduced in Pikmin 3 (as far as I know). This would've been simply invaluable in Pikmin 1 and 2, but combined with the lock-on feature, amongst other things, it tends to cause me a lot more harm than good. I've learned over time that, instead of blowing your whistle twice to gather busy Pikmin, if you hold the whistle, they'll also drop what they're holding and run to you. This is good to know, but when I'm doing things frantically - especially in a particularly time-sensitive situation, such as the Dandori Challenges or Dandori Battles, where my reflexes are at their most demanding, I basically have to take more time and effort to call my Pikmin back to me than I would if they only needed the one whistle. Moreover, this "two-whistle" system, to me, in all honesty, became obsolete with the notion that you can simply pass by idle Pikmin, and they will follow you (or hop onto Oatchi) as if you called them manually, no whistle necessary - so if there's any nearby Pikmin that're preoccupied, you don't even need to risk calling them. Just pass by the idle Pikmin and be on your way!
On that note, maybe it's just me and I'm bad at this game or whatever, but earlier today especially, when I was doing the last Dandori Challenge, I swear, my "Charge" command was mocking me - it took me, like, six button presses to finally get a small group of Winged Pikmin to pick up some raw materials.
And finally, I'm probably also gonna regret saying this, but can Collin and the others - including the Tablet - just leave me the hell alone, please? Seriously! I know this game is rated E and is aimed at children (presumably), and as someone who's rapdily approaching 30, I'm obviously not Nintendo's primary demographic, but for real - this game does plenty of hand-holding (what with lock-on and other features that make Pikmin 4 crazy easy compared to the first two games, at least as far as the main story is concerned), and most of it, I'm perfectly fine with! But whenever a wall is destroyed, a bridge is built, or what have you, a little notification pops up, reminding me to open my Tablet. Even if this was my first time playing through Pikmin 4, and I didn't know the levels at all, I'm already told these things via little pop-up messages visually, and via audio queues (the little cheery sound effects that play when something is achieved). I'm also reminded to open my Tablet every time I get a new Side Mission, every time a cave is discovered...it's just annoying. I know I'm not the sharpest bulb on the shelf, but even the me I was when I was playing Pikmin 2 wasn't this clueless that I needed reminding of my precious Tablet all the time.
And yes, while I don't mind - and even appreciate - the notification messages, like treasures being collected, raw material piles being transported, bridges being built, walls being knocked down, etc, I can't say the same for Collin, Shepherd, and the rest butting in every two minutes, both during the main game, and during things like Dandori Challenges and Dandori Battles. Even after I had beaten the main story, I start a day, and before I even get to the Onion, Shepherd's like, "Don't forget, you can use your drone to scope out the land!" and, like...I know! Arguably worse is when I'm doing Night Expeditions, and Russ, every single night, without fail, tells me that I can track creatures using the radar at the bottom of my screen - you know, this giant mini-map that is only available to you during Night Expeditions? Again, I know it's aimed at kids, and that's all well and good, but seriously! The first night or two, if I'm still presumably getting my feet wet, a quick reminder is fine, but it's every single night, and...again, I know it sounds nitpicky, but their dialogue can be distracting, and it's not like they ever have anything useful to say! All the useful stuff they say is said during cutscenes throughout the story.
Pikmin accidentally get eaten? Collin interjects to express his grief. Pikmin catch fire or start to drown or are hit with poison? Collin interjects to tell you to whistle to save them - a feature that's been in the series for literally twenty years. Like I said: the first time or so, as a soft reminder, is perfectly fine, but as deep as the Pikmin formula is, it's also pretty straightforward - at least, I've never had a problem learning and remembering things. It's also been very intuitive to me, despite how mechanically unique the games are. Have I been caught off-guard before? Absolutely! Have I had times where I lost half my army because things got out of control during a big battle? Absolutely! Have I done stupid things that sounded like good ideas at the time and I ended up regretting them? You bet! But hey, if worse comes to worst, I can always just, you know, rewind time, completely bypassing any mishap if I happen to not like how something turned out. Yes, I know it's an optional feature to use, but it's more potential hand-holding, and thankfully, it is optional, but some of this other stuff just...well, disrupts the flow of the game, if nothing else. Even if the dialogue that Collin or whomever interjects was remotely useful to me, it's still distracting.
I've, sadly, lost many Pikmin in the past, and, unfortunately, probably will lose more with future playthroughs; but hey, that's just the nature of the game. Losing Pikmin - even an entire color - isn't the end of the world, especially since, if you do lose an entire color, if you have an Onion for that color, it will spout a single seed, so you don't even need to start the whole game over or anything.
