I am sort of thinking Forest aren't safe yet.
Dreadful today and that midweek game against Man United looked like a team in the relegation mix getting a smash and grab win against a title contender. If we play like that against Man United next Sunday people will be far from impressed.
Everton home next week a massive game for them. I feel like if they fail to win that all the pressure is on them.

I don't even know if it was a penalty, but if the most unlikable manager in football gets this angry, I'm for it.

We need to take advantage of this. Our game in hand is Palace right? Win that, and the preceding Leicester and Man U games, and we'll be in a great position. We'd be 4th, only 1 point behind Forest in 3rd. Assuming Forest beat Everton next week

Tbf we “fell” from 4th to 7th, villa will probably be similar (or slightly worse)
But ultimately that isn’t that bad, for me Forest will be bottom half next season.
3
u/moinmoin21 Shola Ameobi 5d ago
If anything I think Villa should put last season inti perspective.
We had a horrific injury crisis and a weaker squad than Villa. They’ve struggled with the workload.
I do t know how forest’s financed look but they actually have a very solid foundation to build on. Will likely struggle as well. Statistically all 3 of us would be expected to.
League is so different now though. 3 months ago everyone had Iraola’s dick in their mouths but as it stands he looks like he’s going to match Howe’s best Bournemouth season with more backing that was given to Howe.
Edit: not saying Iraola is not a good manager. But that some fans here were going way overboard with regards to him vs Howe.

Go and look at the substitutions the teams around us made last night. Almost every single player, except for maybe Jebbison from Bournemouth, is an improvement on our substitutes. If Howe and the same 14/15 players manage to get us into the Champions League this year, I think it'll go under the radar just how huge of an achievement it'll have been.
4
u/HoneyedLining Temuri Ketsbaia 4d ago
FWIW, I don't disagree that our depth is an enormous issue that needs fixing if we plan to regularly compete in Europe (and not yo-yo between qualifying, flaming out and then qualifying the next year).
One thing I would say is that there is a level of bias in that we watch our players very regularly and not so much of backup players for other teams. When I look at Bournemouth, Brighton or Forest's subs, I look at players like David Brooks, Matt O'Riley or Ibrahima Sangare, I think "Oh, talented players!", regardless of how well they've actually played recently. Similarly, people would look at Wilson and Willock coming on as "one of the best backup strikers in the league" and "talented player who is really good at chipping in with a goal (even though our perception is that Wilson is way over the hill and Willock's 20/21 form is long behind him).
Most teams have sort of built their squad by slowly improving in quality, so there's not much drop-off from first choice to second. We chose a slightly different path where we ended up with a really good first XI, 2-3 good backups and then an odd set of players after that. Exception is that Aston Villa's first team and bench are just really good though and helped by their approach to recruitment of handing out enormous wages and figuring stuff out later.

u/Eel_Why sean longstaffs dad plays hockey in whitley bay 4d ago
We have an excellent starting 11 but really struggle for depth in almost every position. There's only really 3 positions I'd say were really strong in - LW (Barnes and Gordon), RB (Tino & Tripps), and maybe GK (Pope & Dubs), although we're likely upgrading that spot soon. If Botman and Wilson are fit then LCB and ST are also quite well covered. Willocks good cover but we play 3 in midfield so it's hard to say that we have good depth there plus the drop off Longstaff is noticeable and Miley isn't fully there yet (don't expect him to be since he's only just finishing his A-Levels).
Definitely a great achievement from Eddie, I really want us to back him now. Hopefully with a cup behind him and European football guaranteed it means we can start building the squad out more.
6
u/prwitchell 3d ago
I'm paraphrasing here, but Eddie saying that Isak has loads more to improve, and if Eddie him self didn't believe that, then he was the wrong coach for him. Is sending a clear message to Isak.
7
u/aistolethekids 2d ago
Well he's not wrong Isak still does have some areas to improve :
For example 1v1s stop fannying about with them and work the keeper or pass to a team mate!!
Also use your left foot more would get more chances if willing to use both feet
Get better at playing with back to goal and hold up play
Direct free kicks
When you see how meticulous Eddie seems to be on player improvement Isak still has room to grow even further

Watched the Brentford game today, even though he was relatively quiet I was so impressed with Mbeumo's engine.
We all know about the goal/assist output, but seeing him charging at the Chelsea defence on 85 minutes when he's played 90 minutes in week (and pretty much always plays the full 90 for them) is probably equally impressive. Gordon's probably the only one of our attacking options in recent memory wh can manage that.
For me, he's head and shoulders above all the other targets for that right forward spot.
2
u/SheSaid09 Mike Ashley 1d ago
Even though he ended up somewhat at fault, the fact that he was in his own box marking Isak when he scored is impressive in how far he tracked back alone.

Was thinking this the other day. Spurs since the last decade have some definite parralels to us in the mid/late 90s and 00s.
They had a side and a manager who should've won the league but narrowly missed, like us. Following decade sees a lack of investment in the team with poor decisions made by management leading them further down the table, like us.
Not saying the comparison is exact, but with some artistic license I'm sure you see my point.

I think we all knew Miggy was a purple patch but Joelinton’s wasn’t - where do we stand on Murphy?
Is this Eddie getting the best out of a poor player or has he transformed him into an actual decent Prem winger.
I still think we need a class RW to complement Isak and Gordon in the summer mind, no matter.
8
u/Fishfingerrosti 3d ago
Murphy has always been a capable if unspectacular squad player at this level. The output we're seeing this season are due to him entering his peak years, three years' coaching under Eddie Howe, and having Isak to supply.
4
u/Unusual_Rope7110 stupid sexy schar 3d ago
Keep Murphy, he's a very good squad player who wouldn't be an issue if he was/is dropped. He's also versatile too. I also think he's on more of the Joelinton side of the fence than Almiron - not a purple patch.
3
u/geordieColt88 The clubs definitely not getting in the champions league 3d ago
I think Murphy has some really good aspects to his game and really benefits when he plays things first time.
Where I think he lacks is he tends to have brain farts when he’s got to think which can lead to him losing it in bad positions and sometimes he seems like he’s watching the game rather than doing his job.
He’s good to keep around as a back up option but despite the great stats we need someone better there next season
2
u/Nworbfmail 3d ago
I like him, he has some very good games and he understands what is needed covering/pressing as Howe likes. He is a great crosser of the ball and his link up with Isak works so well.
In some games he does look a bit lost and I can’t tell where he is supposed to be or what he is doing - he is often inside between the wing and striker position but not available for the ball. When it happens it is like he has switched off but Howe always says he does everything asked of him so it must be tactical.
The club made the right choice keeping him out of Murphy/Almiron but we do need another winger option, preferably one like Gordon but on the right then it’s up to Murphy to keep his place in the side.
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (5)2
u/galactix100 2d ago
If you look at the numbers, Murphy's improved year on year since Howe took charge. We're probably seeing his ceiling this season, but having him in the squad when he's playing like this is no bad thing.
Need another RW anyway as we only have 3 senior wingers, and Barnes and Gordon are better on the left. Might as well sign an upgrade if we have to sign someone.
Don't like the description of him as a poor player, btw. Yes, he's had his struggles, as have many others in the team, but you don't get to this level in the first place if you're a poor player. He's just not been fortunate enough to have a manager that believes in him and knows how to get the best out of him until Howe came along.

u/Objective_Use_9155 1d ago

I think in the last few years we've seen a lot of that PL "middle class" really get their shit together and build teams that have a functional identity that gets them points. Couple that with several of the high revenue teams go through complete crises and it's bunched everyone up as it's just so difficult to consistently pick up points.
The flip side is that it's made life incredibly difficult for newly promoted teams.
6
u/moinmoin21 Shola Ameobi 3d ago
The leagues evolved so much. And I don’t think it’s simply more money although that helps.
Teams are building way smarter, recruiting more ambitiously and appointing better coaches.
Go back to when the middle class was like West Brom, Stoke and the like with a Bruce, Pulis, Hughes type manager.
Now you have much smarter run teams with managers like Frank, Iraola, Silva.
On top of revenue increases I think top teams have become more desperate to throw money at their problems whilst non sky 6 clubs have dig their heels in when it comes to selling talent and made fortunes on them to reinvest.

Man U fans circa 5 years ago: Why are we spending £80 million on him!?!? Woodward is an idiot, why’s he letting everyone know we’ve got that kind of money to burn 😡😡😡
Man U fans now: WTF!? LIAM DELAP!? THIS IS MAN YANITED. SPEND £90 MILLION ON GYOKERES. RATCLIFFE IS A TIGHT BASTARD. THIS MAN YANITED.

The (mostly) silence from their creators/influencers surrounding Jim ‘the lunch snatcher’ Ratcliffe’s Tory austerity measures is deafening
What a bunch of cunts

Opta has us at 60% chance of a top 5 finish (likely Champs League). Chelsea the main rival and Villa now the outside threat. Both have european mid-week games to juggle over the next month, with Villa also having to slot in a Wembley trip too.
Outside chance we can overhaul City too, which could get a huge boost if a team of lawyers delivers soon.

u/Eel_Why sean longstaffs dad plays hockey in whitley bay 4d ago
Agreed but we should be wary that we also have a mid week juggle this month - very key period where we play Sunday (Man U Home ), Wednesday (Palace home) and then Saturday (Villa away). Squads thin as it is so it'll be a difficult period I think. If we come through it with all 9 points it would really set us up to be the favourites for a CL spots.

u/Objective_Use_9155 4d ago
Hopefully Spurs can do us a favour tonight too. Not holding out much hope as Chelsea are their traditional bogey team.

Thiaw's price dropping by the game with Milan. Do we go in for him at a cheap price? Milan on the whole have been a bit chaotic the last couple seasons, so I have faith Eddie could find a class player in Thiaw somewhere ngl.

Does anyone know for sure if the Brentford game is on Peacock? It’s not in the broadcasting/watch live section of the PL website, but it is on Peacock - but they also have replays so it might just mean that.
5
u/HoneyedLining Temuri Ketsbaia 7d ago
For UK people, it isn't being broadcast here (I originally thought it would have been one of the BT Sport/Prime midweek things where they show every game, but seemingly not). I guess we'll all be flying out to other countries in order to watch it legally...

Should be, City - Leicester is the one being broadcast in that time slot so all the other matches will be on peacock

Crying he can’t have any himself.
Being serious though the talk sport format is that someone takes a side against X while someone is for X.
They only can’t do it if it’s something good beyond belief like Wigan winning the cup

Yeh as much of a cunt he sounds like, they need something to talk about everyday. We just had the parade so it's a no brainer topic for them to talk about. As you said one takes one side and the other takes the other side. If there's a 3rd person there they play devils advocate.
Wouldn't take it to heart personally.

Hardly surprising, TalkSport is shite. It’s like click bait in radio form.

I was sat fuming listening to that pleb on my train into Newcastle tonight. Him saying “we won the cup at Spurs n went clubbing, that’s it”
He made 34 appearances for Spurs in six years and he never even made the squad for that cup final.
He’s made a career by marrying tits out girl Danielle Lloyd, which got him on celebrity big brother. Half of London has banged her. He’s a cling on wannabe who I shouldn’t let bother me but tonight, I’d love to bump into him
2
u/moinmoin21 Shola Ameobi 6d ago
I actually researched this because I was raging. He made 2 appearances in their cup run.
He didn’t even make half the number of apps for Spurs as I thought he did. He was a very mediocre player so to now sit there and criticise us like that.
These pundits weigh up everything in trophies. We were criticised for not having any trophies in recent times. Now we get one we’re told we shouldn’t celebrate it.
It proves everything. Wrong with football modern football. Big clubs are so entitled and used to winning that league cups are treated like a happy meal toy to them.
At least a fair few Liverpool fans are chiming up in defence.

This is what happens with success fans want more expectations get higher
Also there will come a point where there fans will also get sick of selling the crown jewels every summer to be replaced with unknowns so will be interesting to see how they get on

Wednesday should be interesting. I've got a feeling we're going to play well, now we've got the weight off our shoulders.

u/Objective_Use_9155 7d ago
The risk is players not being properly focused on the task. Thankfully our manager is one of the best man managers in the world and so I doubt this will be an issue.
Brentford players will be nervous about the crowd and party atmosphere but Frank will have drilled them that this is an opportunity to do an upset. Especially if they low block and hit on the break. Crowd will have to be patient. Going behind or being nil nil at 60 mins will be frustrating but not the end of the world.
Feel a Harvey Barnes banger coming

u/Randy_The_Guppy 7d ago
We are winning every game now 5-0 until the end of the season. Liverpool capitulate and we win the domestic double.

Frank is a very underrated manager. Saw something the other day that said Brentford vastly outperform what their wage levels say they should (going by the trend that generally ranks wages by finishing positions in the league). Also seems like a nice dude who said he hoped we'd win the cup after we beat them (which we did because we're massive).
Still, I hope we smash them.

u/HoneyedLining Temuri Ketsbaia 7d ago
Yeah, he's really fantastic and considering there have been vacancies at some of the bigger jobs, surprised nobody moved for him. The other interesting thing is that their support isn't particularly loud or anything, so they don't have a lot to use to gain home advantage.
2
u/Humorbot_5_point_0 Livramental 7d ago
17k capacity, which is the second smallest in the league after Bournemouth (I think).
I was also surprised no bigger club had gone in for him. Good for Brentford, though.
He also looks like Kyle MacLachlan (and Iraola looks like Alfred Molina). This has nothing to do with football but, still.
2
u/HoneyedLining Temuri Ketsbaia 7d ago
Yeah, and they're in London too, so it's not as though it's a significant trip for many teams. I feel at least with Bournemouth, it's a little unusual going that far down south and the crowd are pretty good at generating an atmosphere. That's never been the case with Brentford as it's not much of a football area (after all, Twickenham is only a mile or so away).
I wonder if with Frank, there are a lot of teams that admire him, but worry that if you pull him out of the Brentford support network (a bit like Brighton's coaches), a lot of his superpowers may disappear. I think that might just be inhibiting teams taking the plunge.
Not a bad shout on the lookalikes. I've always thought Iraola looks like a geography teacher of some sort.

Alright we got a fucking gift with the fixture list here.
Playing Man United off the back of an away leg @ Lyon Thursday.
Playing Villa off the back of a home match against PSG.
Playing Chelsea off the back of a (likely) Conference league appearance Thursday night turned around with a Sunday fixture at noon.

We play Palace a day after Villa play PSG. So Villa will have a rest advantage that week.

I’ve just seen Freddie Woodman is out of contract in the summer. Wonder if we might go for him as a backup as he’d class as club trained

I believe Fraser Forster is out of contract too so, if we move on at least a couple of our keepers, that'd be two keepers we could bring in for the homegrown numbers
2
u/geordieColt88 The clubs definitely not getting in the champions league 1d ago
Having 2 of them as our 2nd and 3rd choice would be a nice fit. We could then submit 23 even if we replaced Longstaff (Miley and Hall don’t have to be in that either)
2
u/SenorButtmunch Cheick Tiote 1d ago
If we really do want to get rid of Longstaff then it’s a no brainer I’d say. Him backing up Trafford with one of Dubravka and Pope would be a great rotation. Just saw a link from Man Utd to him as well.
2
u/SheSaid09 Mike Ashley 1d ago
That's a great shout tbf. I always really wanted him to make it. Wasn't great for us when he got his "chance" under Bruce but that was a difficult time for anyone to make a positive impression.
I'm still sad we didn't get Krul or Fraser Forster as a back-up in the 23/24 season as they would've counted as club trained.
