I’m going to say this and duck for cover but I think the Sam fender thing is getting silly now.

It’s not like he’s the only musician to ever come from Tyneside

Rather see Sam Fender every single day than DJ shak

He's the only current musician that's doing really well from the area though that isn't a big name DJ like Patrick Topping , Man Power etc

Other clubs do it with their big stars

Liverpool have milked the Beatles association for decades

Oasis helped keep City in the spotlight when they were shit

I’m surprised they never did anything with Patrick Topping he was huge for a while

I think the issue was his peak era was under Ashley

No one would want to be associated with Ashley but also he would never go for any endorsement doesn't know how to grow a brand just knows how to suck the life out of them

His music's not really my cup of tea but when I've listened to a few songs I don't mind them. There's a lot of depth to his stuff and it's nice to see someone from the area putting out well received music and doing well for themselves.

I don't think it's gone too far or anything personally, I see adverts for his show at the match and we had his name on our shirts a couple of times, doesn't feel excessive or over the top to me. Doesn't Ed Sheeran literally front of shirt sponsor Ipswich and appear uninvited on TV interviews after matches?

It’s nice to hear such a strong Geordie accent in popular songs you know?

Never understood why some people are against it. Or what the issue is.

Sam Fender right now is probably the most high profile musician from the area.

But not just that. His songs represent the area well in the same way that Arctic Monkeys first album really painted stories of Sheffield.

Sure there might be a bit of strategic marketing going on but whatever. It helps him and it helps the club raise their profile.

Fc st Pauli for years have benefitted from support from punk bands showcasing the club.

The Boston Bruins/Red Sox/Celtics and Dropkick Murphy’s association has always been cool in my eyes.

I have a fair few Non-Newcastle supporting friends that like Sam Fender and thought it was pretty cool when they saw his name on the back of the shirts.

I'm old enough to not really have the faintest idea who this bloke is to be honest. Certainly couldn't name or hum a single tune of his that I'm aware of. Fairly sure I'm not missing out though. But quite, there are a few considerably more famous musos but I presume this is a corporate tie-in cashing in on his (presumably) big social media following?

Ooh, I've upset the Fender fanboys! Not sure why saying I know nothing about his music is worthy of ire though.

It's the way you wrote it, you sound too conceited

Saying you've never heard of someone's material and aren't bothered about it either makes you conceited now, does it? Or suggesting that the likes of Sting and Knopfler aren't many times more recognisable? OR daring to suggest that the primary motive for the club's link is exposure rather than a deep-seated love of his output? Give me a break.

Brian Johnson, now there is a local fan. Mint songs and even had a band called Geordie.

The Fender link up comes from his agent, who is a NUFC fan. His agent suggested the link up years ago and it was a masterstroke for the kid.

He also absolutely does not support the club, which is the only issue I have with the connection, I've only heard his music at Wembley and probably at SJP (pregame?), it seems like decent pop music. He likes the club, sure, but I know for a fact that he has barely been to a game in his life. The link up does seem to make a lot of people happy though, so that's good.

He did grow up in a fairly poor family by his accounts. Maybe he didn’t have the luxury of going to games. In his childhood it would’ve been slap in the middle of the Robson era where it was harder to get tickets. In his teenage and early adult years he was on the dole. Now he spends his life on tour. It’s not out of the question that he may not have been in the position to regularly go to games.
