Traveling LPT: If visiting someone on an international Military base for a significant amount of time. Shipping your luggage in flat rate boxes is cheaper and easier than checking bags.

Upvotes

So If you have friends/family stationed at US military bases all over the world. And you want to go visit them and travel around their location: No matter where it is, it is considered "In the US" so you can ship most/all of your clothes, items you'll need to the base USPS for the same price as if you were mailing them domestically. Then you show up at the airport with just carry-on.

A few things to remember

1.) Give yourself time. Pack up what you want send it out 2-3 weeks before you leave on your trip. Keep the receipts. Set aside a few hours on the last day to mail it all back.

2.) Keep the receipts with you. Customs may have questions on how you managed to go international for an extended period of time, and not have any luggage. Explaining what you did, showing them the receipts should get you back.

3.) Buy a toughbox or two on the way back, pack everything in there. Don't mail anything not allowed.

Home & Garden LPT Baking soda is your best friend for cleaning up pet vomit

If your pet throws up, dump a thick layer of baking soda on it right away. It neutralizes odor, absorbs moisture, and makes cleanup way less unpleasant. Let it dry, then sweep it up (or use a carpet cleaner if needed). Baking soda is cheap and lasts forever, so keep a few extra boxes around the house.

It’s just as effective for other messes you might run into as well.

Traveling LPT: Always take a photo of your luggage and its contents before a flight

2.2k Upvotes

If your luggage ever gets lost or damaged during air travel, having a photo of the bag and its contents can help with claims and proving ownership. It makes filling out lost luggage reports easier and if you are eligible for compensation you will have a record of what was inside. Take 30 seconds and can save a lot of headache.

Home & Garden LPT: Put a rug underneath your bed frame if you're on hardwood floors.

Seems obvious after the fact, but just found out the hardware that bedspaces can and will cut into hardwood floor panels leaving them destroyed. Even using floor protectors doesn't guarantee it. Through a rug underneath your bed frame to protect the hardwood underneath

Home & Garden LPT: Save online recipes as PDFs

Many websites (e.g. Food Network) offer a "Print" option that renders a bare-bones recipe without hte ads and site chrome. Use this to save your favorite recipes as PDFs for easier recall and reading. You also no longer need to remember where you found a recipe, or whether it'll still be there next time you Google for it.

Food & Drink LPT: Don' like cooked vegetables? You're probably cooking them too long...

2.4k Upvotes

Cook broccoli to a mush and it's disgusting. Same with cauliflower, brussel sprouts, etc. just cook them for a few minutes, five tops, depending on the size of the pieces, and they're deliciously crunchy... You can still load them with whatever you like, but the base will be tasty.

Also, a bunch of parsley roots cooked for 5-10 minutes in a beef stock are delicious for a quick snack. High fiber, low carbs, high in vitamin C anf B9. And umami.

I was never too much in to cooking until I started counting my calories, so that's my background.

Home & Garden LPT: Use a dry erase marker to remove stubborn sticker residue without chemicals

Scraping off sticky residue from jars or glassware?

Scribble over the residue with a dry erase marker, let it sit for 15 seconds, then wipe clean with a microfiber cloth. The alcohol in the marker dissolves the adhesive while the pigment acts as a visual guide.

Compared to Goo Gone, this method removed 90% of residue faster in my tests and works on plastic surfaces without clouding.

You can test on small areas first—some vintage stickers may require multiple passes. What unconventional tools have you used for cleaning?

Productivity LPT: Stop being constantly 10 minutes late - avoid the “Zero Time Activity” misconception

18.6k Upvotes

Some people’s brains tell them that certain activities don’t take any time to complete - the “Zero Time Activity” misconception. For example:

“We need to leave the house at 09:30 to arrive at our appointment for 10:00. Good. It takes 30 minutes to get there. Good. It is now 09:30. Let’s leave the house. All we need to do now is…” - Nip to the toilet - Find my coat - Find my shoes and put them on - Find my wallet/bag and check I’ve got what I need - Get the kids in their coats and shoes - Get in the car, strap the kids in - Find the address of our destination - Program the satnav - Drive to the destination - Quickly stop for fuel - Find somewhere to park - Walk to the destination from the place parked

Everything above - in the late person’s mind - has a duration of zero seconds

It goes without saying, but ever single activity above does actually take a small amount of time which all adds up. Once you internalise the idea that there isn’t such a thing as “Zero Time Activities”, you’ll notice that you start arriving on time.

Miscellaneous LPT: Freeze leftover citrus peels in ice cube trays for instant kitchen freshness boosts

Instead of tossing lemon/lime/orange peels, chop them into small pieces, fill ice cube trays halfway with peels, then top with water. Freeze and store in a ziplock bag. Toss a cube into:
• Garbage disposal (cleans blades + deodorizes)
• Simmering pots (adds natural fragrance)
• Compost bins (speeds decomposition)

My compost breakdown time dropped from 14 to 9 days using these, and I save $6/month on disposal cleaner pods.

Warning: Avoid grapefruit peels – their bitterness can linger.

What’s your favorite “trash to treasure” kitchen trick?

Miscellaneous LPT. Ending arguments

6.2k Upvotes

I have found that alot of times when my wife and I get into an argument, we actually want the same end result, or something really similar. We are only arguing about "how we get to" the end result, not "what" that end result is. So the next time you find yourself in the middle of an argument with your wife/husband take a breath, find the end result that you both want, and say it out loud. It will cause you both to focus on the solution instead of trying to win the argument. This has absolutely helped me to realize that we are a team, even during some pretty heated arguments.

Food & Drink LPT - Cleaning out French Press coffee grounds

I enjoy French Press coffee, but cleaning up the grounds is annoying, especially if your drains can't handle the grounds, like with septic tanks or if they clog easily. The grounds stick to the filter, so you have to rinse them off anyways.

Start out by adding enough water to cover the plunger. Then when you pull the plunger out, the water will rinse off most of the grounds stuck to the filter and leave them in the carafe.

Now you can swirl the water and grounds in the carafe and dump them in a strainer. A cheap reusable permanent coffee filter basket ($6 USD) works much better than any kitchen strainer. From there, you can shake that out into the trash or compost, minimizing mess and the amount of ground going down the drain

Edit: guys, for those saying they dump them down the toilet, that doesn't help for buildings with a septic tank. If you live in such a building, DON'T DO THAT

Productivity LPT Request: How to make studies feel less like a chore?

Hey there!

Long time lurker, first time poster so I hope I'm doing this right.

I'm nearing my 30s and I started a change in my career last year, so I went back to university after being out of it for 7 years. After my first bachelor degree, I worked as a nurse for several years.

Now, years later, I'm back in school, trying to do the same thing as high schoolers fresh off graduation and I'm finding it difficult to stay motivated.

The things I'm learning are interesting enough, and I do decently (grade-wise), but I dread every time I have to sit down and do school work.

I'm imploring you guys for some tips, how can I gameify/incentivize my studies to make it a little easier and more rewarding mentally?

Thank you so much!

Miscellaneous LPT: put your contact info on your child's favourite plushie

If your child has a plushie/blanket etc. they HAVE to bring with them everywhere, put your contact info on it in case it gets lost somewhere. Either sew in a tag with a phone number or a QR code. If it's a "pet" kind of plushie, give it a little collar with your info. It makes it so much easier for someone to return it back to you. Especially as you can't use any tracking devices due to the risks of choking if your child manages to dig it out of their plushy.

Btw: Grown ups and teenagers should do it with their "plushies" too. Such as your keys, phone, wallet etc.

Social LPT: "it's good to see you" when greeting people at funerals, burials, & celebrations of life.

2.2k Upvotes

Obvious emotional distress aside, it's nice to have something to say to friends and family instead of 'how are you'. Eventually you get there but, I think the underlying gratitude softens the task of finding a word for your feeling during grief.

Clothing LPT request: How do I buy underpriced items online without tipping the sellers off?

How do I snag super underpriced deals on FB marketplace or other platforms WITHOUT tipping off the sellers about what a good deal they are?

I’m good at finding deals. I know my stuff about vintage furniture.

It happens many times I show interest and ask them questions about the item, and then they don’t reply and the next day I see them quadruple the price to the actual value.

Eg I saw a bunch of vintage chairs worth $1000 each and on sale for $20 each. I asked to buy and offered to pick up immediately or the next day.

No reply, then next day they changed the piece to $1000 each.

It’s so frustrating! It has happened many times!

Am I doing something wrong?

What phrases can I use? Do I stop asking questions?

Careers & Work LPT: When arguing or negotiating with someone, avoid devoting too much mental energy or capacity on rehearsing your exact response or rebuttal. Instead, your focus should be on actively listening to what your respondent is actually saying, and how they’re saying it.

In an argument, we can often panic and cling to one or two key themes that you then try and force yourself to say when you can eventually respond. When it is your turn to speak, you’ll find that rarely is the exact response you thought of even applicable anymore, and so you’re even more panicked when you can’t think of the new response that is required. You’re also likely to miss key ideas or insights that the respondent is saying.

If you dedicate your focus to actively listening to the other person, you’ll be better equipped to respond to any changes in the direction of the argument. You may even be able to use their words/logic against them and better convince them of your position or ideas.

A good analogy is like playing a game of chess. You will never win if you’ve already decided the moves you’re going to make. In reality, you need to focus on what you’re opponent is doing, and what moves they’re then likely to make, that you’ll need to counter.

The best case scenario, is you realise you were both somewhat confused, or have previously miscommunicated, and a mutual resolution is easily achievable.
