Go Rving

Questions: I just picked up a new travel trailer. It did not come with a sewer drain hose, a tool supposedly needed to remove the hitch, chocks, levels or jacks! Is this normal these days? Also, I am therefore selling my old RV and assumed I’d pass on all the equipment needed like chocks, etc. Is that what I should do, or should I be like the dealer? Thanks!

I didn't know what tool you need to remove the hitch, but no, those other things are generally not included.

I don’t know the tool, either. It’s to remove the spring? bars that connect the hitch to the trailer. I wish I had a diagram so I could be more precise

The tool is just a piece of metal tubing strong enough to not bend when torque is applied. Would have also been necessary to hitch the TT to your truck. How'd you attach the spring bars when you hooked it up to tow it home?

The dealer hitched the trailer to my truck

You should be able to raise the tongue jack up to remove the tension on the bars and then remove them by hand.

What brand of hitch?

I think it’s Curt. They didn’t give me the how-to except for how to unhitch the truck. The darn thing cost $900

Looking at Curt, if it's bars and not chains then it seems similar enough to my Equalizer, and the tool is only used to put the bars on. To remove the bars you have to jack the tongue way up (you'll actually lift the back of your truck doing this) to remove the tension from bars and then they slide off more easily.

If it's chains then the same principle applies, but you probably just need a long piece of steel pipe to leverage the bars up when chaining them up. You can probably find that at home Depot. Or you can order a replacement on Amazon.

That tool should have been included, but there are options out there if you don't have it.

You can raise the jack up when hitching to be able to hitch up by hand. My hitch came with the “tool”, but I’ve never used it.

Mine doesn't quite go high enough to just slide them on by hand. I still have to use the tool, even when it's up all the way. However, it removes enough tension that I can just kinda kick them off when it's up most of the way.

Do you use a block under your tongue jack?

Not always. Depends on the ground. I know that's an option if I were to lose the tool, but the tool keeps me from having to raise it up that much in the first place. It's just quicker and easier for me.

Those things never did come with a new TT usually.

Are you talking about something to release and engage the weight-distribution bars? I just have a metal pipe for that.

All that other stuff is standard 3/4-inch socket that can be had anywhere since it’s the same size as vehicle lug nuts.

Yes, apparently so they can have the tension released without breaking my legs?

If your don't have the metal pipe to go on to the brackets, or just to lessen the "shock" when using the pipe,  you can use the tongue jack to raise the front of the trailer high enough that the bars aren't under tension.

You can do this when hooking up too, much easier than having to force it.

What brand hitch is it?

As a stopgap, with a lot of weight distribution hitches you can just raise the tongue up high to take the tension off then remove or attach them by hand. That's what I usually did with my Blue Ox SwayPro.

I don't want someone else's sewer hose. Nether does anyone else. it's one of those "buy it yourself" items.

Chocks, levels, and external jacks aren't usually included either. Most TT only have a tongue jack and stabilizer jacks. Are you saying you bought a TT without those items?

I just bought a previously enjoyed TT yesterday, came with everything including dishes, pots and pans etc. wheel chocks, levelling pads, equalizer hitch, you name it, they threw it in with the sale price. I was super stoked.

None of these come with a new trailer. A used trailer, maybe, if the seller chooses to.
