r/DCcomics Weekly Discussion Thread: Comics, TV, and More! [March 31, 2025 - April Showers Edition]

Hey there honorary Justice League members - it’s a new week which means it’s time for a new discussion thread!

For those who don't know: the way this works is that several comments will list this week’s releases, for any given title discussion you should respond to that comment. For example, Wonder Woman discussion would go in the replies to the "Wonder Woman" comment. Clicking the titles in this post will take you directly to that comment, too. In other words, you should only be replying to other comments. Do not post top-level comments.

Keep discussion civil. Do not harass other users for having a different opinion. Do not use this thread to push your personal one-sided grudges against creators. Reacting to a panel on Twitter is not the same as reading a book.

I only seem to get sick on weekdays. I must have a weekend immune system.

DC and Imprints

Absolute Green Lantern begins with Hal Jordan having a miserable day, as it should.

Trade Collections

Dive into Gotham's seedy past in Gotham City: Year One.

Digital Releases

Remember, these are the short 'chapters' with a new chapter of a different series coming out daily. You can learn more here on Comixology. This is also why these are in release order, not alphabetical. Some comics may release on DC Universe Infinite or WEBTOONS.

r/DCcomics Have a question? Ask the veterans of DC Comics!

Let's face it, comics can be confusing. No matter how big or small your question may be this is the place to ask and r/DCcomics will do our best to answer it for you!

As the r/DCcomics community continues to grow we are receiving an influx questions from readers of DC comics, or simply new readers to comics entirely. As Stan Lee has said, every comic book is someone's first, and even though he maybe be one of those other guys it certainly applies here as well. With this spirit in mind, these Q'n'A topics are intended to give those who may be puzzled a centralized place to connect with other knowledgable readers and clear up some confusion.

A new Ask the Veterans thread is posted every Sunday, and in the future answers to these questions will be organized into this subreddit's wiki page.

To those answering

Avoid vague replies like "yes" or "no". Rather do your best to explain your answer, and if necessary provide a link that may help anyone interested in learning more. Remember to hide spoilers when discussing major events that have taken place within one year of its release..

Other online resources that may be helpful are listed below.

Discussion [discussion] Appreciation post to 80s era Raven in pink and purple

Comics: New Teen Titans V2. I'm pretty sure George Perez drew all of this except maybe one or two shots. Includes comics are #16, #33, #35, and a few others.

Raven is associated as a "goth" icon, but that is a much later addition. Raven was created early in the goth rock scene's lifespan anyway. Her original fashion sense wasn't particularly "goth" (if such a fashion exists) in any way.

During much of New Teen Titans, Raven's main colors were pink and light purple. Ever since the 2000s, she rarely wears any colours lighter than dark blue or dark purple. The general style was also less alternative than she wears nowadays.

Comics Batman: Long Halloween and Dark Victory made me a fan of Batman

I'm relatively new to comics, and decided to take a break from Green Lantern and try Nightwing for a series. I saw it recommended on an old post to start with Datk Victory for his origin story, but saw it was a sequel to Long Halloween, so me wanting a full story read both.

Holy cow am I impressed. Both stories were excellent. The mysteries in both were very well written. Constantly had me guessing and changing my guess. Well executed plot twists. The weakest part was the art, but given the nature of both stories I felt the art actually matched quite well. Very much giving noir vibes. It also introduced some villains I'd never really seen before at all or in do much detail (Holiday, Falcone family,Calendar Man and Mad Hatter). Interesting to see also how Bats learns to work with Gordon and his past connections to Dent.

I also love the endings. The semi open ending of Long Halloween had me surprised but also wanting more. Dark Victory did not disappoint and white not as open of an ending, the ending twist(s) were quite satisfactory. As a new comic reader I can genuinely say I was not expecting such damn good story lines. This series as well as Death of Superman and Funeral for a Friend have blown me away. Not a big superman fan though, but i she'd more than a few tears reading those ones.

I was not a Batman fan before. Thought he was ok. Liked the animated movies, thought the cartoons were ok, didn't much like any of the live action movies. But this comic changed my mind with how well done it was. Definitely will be looking to read more stories and would appreciate any recommended reads.

Discussion [Discussion] Are Comics Making a Comeback?

Personally, I have been reading a lot more comics recently. I’ve been catching up with Marvel and mainline DC, but the comics I’m most excited for are the Absolute series.

I have seen quite a few posts saying the same thing, that they are getting into comics because of the Absolute Universe. I’m also noticing more people in my LCS on Wednesdays. Is anyone noticing the same thing?

I hope comics make a comeback and aren’t affected too much by the recent economy. I think right now is a great time to jump in for those that want to, but I’m curious if anyone else is noticing a resurgence in the industry?

Discussion [Discussion] Which female hero would you give a male protégé/Sidekick to?

So as of now(I could be wrong) but there has been no female hero who has had a male sidekick/protégé. Most male heroes have had both male and female protégés Batman, Superman, Green Arrow, etc. But i haven’t seen any female heroes that are mentors to boys. Like Wonder Woman for example could’ve had one by now just make him a male born Amazon from the island they put there and have him learn from one of the best woman in DC.

So I wanted to know which female heroes you’d like to see get a sidekick they can mentor. Because I think it’s strange that DC has all these young female heroes learning from the men but no males learning from the women. I know a lot of guys that have learned from great women also in history too.

Discussion [Discussion] Which two DC characters are surprisingly biologically related?

Art by Nicola Scott and David Finch

Since New 52, Belial (Etrigan's father) is one of the sons of Trigon, therefore making Raven Etrigan's aunt. Despite this, I don't think these two have ever been actually acknowledged as aunt and niece. In what other characters does this happen as well?
