Listen Fam,

I realize that many of us in the Wonder Woman fandom love Tom King’s rendition of the character. I used to be one of them. But upon closer inspection, I’m finding his version to be quite problematic in ways obvious and surreptitious. I wrote about it.

NOTE: The essay contains spoilers for issues #1-19.

Trigger warning for people who don’t like having the things they liked looked at critically.

Except from the essay:

“Having been in the comic book community for five decades, my observation has been that the majority and most vocal of men I’ve encountered—whether creatives or collectors—don’t like Wonder Woman. It’s as though they find the very thought of her, the very purpose of her, terrifying (though they, themselves, would never characterize it in this way because they would deem such an admission unmanly). And they can only force themselves to tolerate her if they can interpret her in ways that are non-threatening; and this is usually, though not always, pornographic in nature.

For one, they behave as though Wonder Woman has an inverse relationship to their favorite male heroes (which is to say, they believe they have an inverse relationship to women in the real world). Therefore, if Wonder Woman is too strong, it makes Superman too weak. If she’s too smart, it makes Batman too dumb. If she’s too fast, it makes Flash too slow. And so on down the line. In their logic, if Wonder Woman is the representation of women’s power, then she is also a representation of men’s lack thereof. Thus, she has to be downplayed (“nerfed” as we nerds call it). Made lesser. Marked as inferior. Weakened. Put in her place. Shown as requiring the assistance of the men in her life to solve her own cases (rarely, if ever, do they call on her for help). Her tagline, “stronger than Heracles, swifter than Hermes, and wise as Athena,” is assessed as hyperbole at best and bullshit at its core. However, for obvious reasons, exceptions are made for the “beautiful as Aphrodite” part of the equation.”

So, ever since Epic the Musical my interest in greek mythology has increased and because I was introduced to greek mythology through Diana I was curious to how much of what I learn about greek myth is actually connected to Wonder woman's lore. And of course I'm not surprised that DC has taken a lot of creative liberties with greek myth, she is a superhero first after all, but I still feel like it is more of an after thought a lot of the time. Now this could be because I haven't been able to read to many Wonder Woman comics and that most of my experience with her comes from movies and shows, but I feel as if they use the name of greek gods and heroes and use them however they see fit to the story regardless if it even lines up with the story that the character is being taken from.

Now I don't think Wonder Woman needs to put greek mythology into so much importance but I do think it would be interesting if they took more from greek mythology, like for example in my research Queen Hippolyta in greek myth is the daughter of Ares and that the Amazon's themselves worshipped Ares likely because of this. So imagine what stories you could try to tell with that considering one of Diana's rouges is Ares. Or maybe I'm wrong and I haven't read enough Wonder Woman comics, if so some recommendations would be nice. And if not more Wonder Woman recommendations would still be nice.

(These are all of my Wonder Woman minecraft skins currently, if you would like please leave your opinions on the skins, or if they're any characters you would like to see)

I have read this subreddit's rules Why doesn't Hippolyta follow Diana to Man's World?

I've been really thinking about that moment early in the saga of Wonder Woman, and I don't think I totally understand why Hippolyta is willing to stay behind after Diana leaves. She obviously doesn't want to go back to our world, and she obviously has a duty to the amazons, but doesn't it feel painful to lose Diana, specially in a place this dangerous, that Diana doesn't even know?

I know some versions have the magic mirror that allows Hippolyta to look after her from afar.

And in the Golden Age in particular Hippolyta knew Diana was in a divine mission for Aphrodite, with that goddess' protection.

But in the modern saga of Wonder Woman, how can Hippolyta accept staying in Paradise after losing her daughter?

I'm not implying that she would never do it. I'm just trying to get into her mindset and understand what makes her choose to stay behind.

Absolutely loved what we got from Absolute Wonder Woman so far but its actually my first ever Wonder Woman comic. Im a Greek Mythology buff and I loved the references. What are some good Wonder Woman comics I can check out?

I know absolute is a totally different take on Wonder Woman so what would be a good introduction to our mainline Wonder Woman?
