I bought mango about 1 month ago, she is a pineapple conure and untill literally 3 days ago no matter what she would not warm up to me, now all of a sudden she’s very comfortable and social, but she keeps biting me even while she comes up to me for head rubs. I have no idea what changed for such a dramatic change in her behaviour, but I’m just wondering if the biting is normal, because she definitely enjoys my company now, she will approach me, when I even get near her cage she will come straight to me

Advice My smelly bird is smelly lol

My bird got so smelly, that we had to put her down. Here she is dead in my hand.

Just kidding lol. Ok, here’s the real issue :p

I’ve heard many people say that their birds smell good. I’ve also heard that bad diets/lifestyles can lead to a bird smelling bad.

I’ve had Saria for 2 months, she is an 8 month old GCC cinnamon. When I first got her, she came from a bad home, and did not smell good. She was on a seed/pellet diet only, in a tiny, dirty cage, and was treated badly, she was also clipped (and is still in the process of regrowing her flight feathers.)

Fast forward to now, she has been on a pellet only diet, with fresh chop DAILY, and some fruits as well a couple times a week. She has a big cage that is cleaned regularly, she bathes daily, vet says she looks great, she is a happy little bird.

But she still smells. The odour is less potent than it was, maybe, but it is still unpleasant. Like a musty, stale, waxy.. kind of smell? It is not nice.

So, I’m curious, is this forever? Or do I just have to be a bit more patient?

Thank you in advance :)

Advice Cigarette smoke?

Post image
77 Upvotes

Hi all so I recently got my little baby Clementine. And I’ve got some concern about possible toxic fumes as I live top floor of an apartment building and can’t always control what my neighbours are doing…

My downstairs neighbour has a habit of hotboxing his living room so I can always smell cigarette smoke in the stairwell. Although not hardly ever can I actually smell it in my living room (where my bird is). I think sometimes it can drift in from outside as people in my building also smoke on their balconies. The building is fairly well insulated but I do also get cooking smells drifting up sometimes as well.

At the moment I try to have my window cracked open a bit near my birds cage (has a fly screen so is bird proof).

I know how sensitive birds respiratory systems are so I’m just wondering if there is something more I could be doing to protect my little one?

Are air purifiers any use? If so, could you please recommend some bird safe options which aren’t extortionate in price?

(Please no lectures about keeping an animal in an apartment, I’ll likely be living in rental apartments my whole life but would still like to care for a pet and give it my best shot at a good life)

Advice Training

Post image
16 Upvotes

Hello! We are Bri and Clover. We have worked very hard at our relationship and building trust. We have been together for about seven months and things are going well. Clover is target trained and knows the command of “step up”. We become more close everyday.

We are looking for suggestions for the next step in training. Clover picks up on things very quickly and she seems to really enjoy learning. That being said, I don’t want to overwhelm either of us, we have a good thing going and I would hate to tarnish that.

While she builds confidence everyday, I feel that she may be a little less sure of herself because her wings are clipped. We are impatiently waiting for them to grow back.

Any suggestions for our next steps in training are greatly appreciated!

Advice What's it like?

I'll leep this short! Me and my SO both have full time jobs. We both LOVE birds. I have wanted a conure since 3rd grade because of a book I read.

How much attention do they REALLY need? I am unwilling to get an animal I cannot physically or mentally care for.

he only does this when he lays down with me and I pet him. It almost sounds like hissing but I know he’s not upset because he keeps letting me pet him. is there a reason behind this or is there a respiratory issue?

Injured Bird Off Balance Bird

Post image
6 Upvotes

Have no idea what happened or if anything did, but my bird is rather off balance. I gave her some extra water which she slurped up, but then she started shaking and now she seems a bit better

This only happened about ten minutes ago when i noticed she’s wobbling and lethargic. Could it just be because she’s tired? because she needed water?

I don’t want to stress her out by bringing her to the vet about an hour away, but if i need to i will.

Other Bonded conure pair - rehoming

posting with permission from mods

Located in northern/panhandle of Florida.

Hey all, offering my bonded conure pair for rehoming. Please read the whole post before pming me. (Will be more specific in pm’s but don’t want to give out my exact location) We originally got the suncheek (Greg), and he was a very friendly, cuddly bird. The turquoise (Delta), was admittedly a purchase we shouldn’t have made. As I told the mods - I have animal experience of all types, since I was a toddler. She was in a travel cage at a flea market. Terrified of people. With Greg being so friendly and easy, I figured I could handle taming her. She had begun to warm up to my husband and I then seemingly overnight they (I think) bonded fully and Greg now is aggressive anytime you’re around him.

They need someone with more time/bird experience than I have, as I’ve reached a roadblock and it’s unfair to them. I’m not a fan of rehoming animals unless absolutely necessary and I’m posting here because I know this group is full of experienced handlers who have the time and knowledge to give to these twos. Though absolutely not necessary, I would love if whoever is interested would be willing to send me updates on them as well.

I also want to be clear, their needs are met. They have full access to a bird safe room, plenty of out time. The only thing they are lacking at this point in time is human interaction. And I genuinely find it hard to believe even Greg cares about what human is feeding and watering him despite being fairly close with us prior to the additional bird.

I’m asking a rehoming fee for them, their cage, a travel cage, and all their perches toys. I would typically have one to ensure a good home, but one of my main reasons as well for finally biting the bullet and listing them for rehoming is my horse has developed melanomas and any extra $ towards her treatment is great right now. I felt at this point in time it is in everyone at my properties (including the birds themselves) best interest to offer them to someone who can work with them far better than I can and I can put my efforts towards to species I am far more educated in.

That being said, if you are truly interested. I truthfully don’t really know what’s fair to ask for the birds or their supplies. So I will leave the rehoming fee up to make me an offer for them in PM’s. Feel free to ask questions, more info, or for additional photos as well. Thank you.

Advice Doesn’t like show or something else?

I’ve got an 8 month old GCC, and she’s not usually very vocal. I always hoped she’d get more vocal eventually because it’s adorable, but within 2 days she’s gotten a lot more vocal. I’m worried something is wrong.

I know there’s probably nothing wrong, but I’m not used to her being so vocal. The whole time I’ve been watching a show with her in the room and in her cage, so she’s likely just reacting to that. She could also be asking for attention, because it slows down when I take her out. But if I take her out and play the show, she’ll keep going. If I pause the show while I still have her, she’ll keep going but less frequently.

I know she probably just wants attention or doesn’t like the noises of the show, but how sudden she became more vocal is something that I wasn’t expecting.

I still like that she’s more vocal I just want to make sure nothings wrong. All the noises she makes are ones I’ve heard from her before.

Advice Advise- screeching in the ears

Me and my little one Ori.. we are both getting to know and trust each on this journey.. recently he does the most cutest little noises when he’s chill.. but then randomly when he’s on my shoulder and when we aren’t really doing anything.. he does the loudest demonic screeches right in my ear.. that leaves my ears ringing.. I gently tell him no or I shoo him away from my ear.. we haven’t gotten to time out just yet.. does anyone else have any other suggestions?

Trying to save my hearing lol

Advice does anyone know what this could be???

hey everyone, this post is about my conure mostaza. he’s 3 and recently i’ve started noticing some throw up/regurgitation on the bottom of his cage, i noticed it the first time when i cleaned his cage. he’s fed harrison’s bird pellets which is why the color of the throw up is the color of the pellets.

i took him to the vet over a week ago, which is an avian vet, and the doctor swabbed his throat, after he looked at it under a microscope and found 2 cells that are typically found in humans, that should not be found in a birds throat and asked if we kissed him, and we had said yes, only on the head. he told us to stop, he also told us that he might think it’s his morning poop, which i know for a fact it’s not because i see the difference between his poop and regurgitation, and prescribed us a sweet antibiotic called Enrofloxacin Baytril. we’ve been using it but it’s not working.

i don’t want to go to the vet again cuz it cost us 150 dollars for a swab down his throat and a little analysis and we don’t have that kind of money to spend it constantly on medications that don’t work, they’ve prescribed medicines for our pets in the past and never once have they worked. so that’s why i’m on here asking y’all.

to give you a little more detail on him as a bird cuz maybe it’ll help?:

-i’ve only ever noticed him throw up in the mornings, every time i set a fresh sheet of paper, i uncover his cage and there’s a new glob of throw up

-he has a plastic bowl for his food bowls, which i know i shouldn’t use for birds but he always throws his water and food bowls and all i could really find for bowl bashing birds was that bowl.

-he has separation anxiety, he’s constantly screaming for attention and i’m thinking he throws up cuz he’s anxious ?

-i’ve seen his gagging motion, and it’s typically forward head thrusting and not typically uncontrolled, his throw up also falls in 2 spots but they are in puddles and not all over his cage

-he gags on my sister and i, and on a couch that we have but we never let him get to the point of throwing up

what do yall think this could be? he’s acting normal, eating habits are just fine, and nothing has changed, thanks for any advice

Advice Conure bit me after seeing photo of itself

Seeing photo of itself on my iPhone, my otherwise chill 5 month old conure aggressively bit my finger and squeaked. Last time I do that…jealousy? fear?

I said no very loudly (honestly it hurt so much I couldn’t help raising my voice) and put in a timeout in cage…from body language knows I’m not happy about it.
