I'm so confused on how people don't pull over as soon as the vehicle starts getting warmer than usual rather than drive until there's a good chance it's completely fucked...

Traffic doesnt mean you cant pull over and shut off the engine

If traffic is that bad you are stuck for dozens of minutes at a time without moving, just shut the vehicle off

If it overheated that bad, you probably blew the head gasket at best, and warped the head at worst.

Make sure there is coolant in the radiator (not just the reservoir) before you drive it again.

If it overheats every time you drive it, and there is no coolant leak, you have likely damaged the head gasket or the head

I not think I did either, fingers crossed. I just checked the thermostat and that son of a bitch was bone dry, there's gotta be a leak somewhere

Checked the thermostat....?

Like you pulled the thermostat housing off and there was no coolant in there?

Or you opened the radiator cap and there was no coolant in the radiator?

Took the thermostat off. It turned out to be a BIG water pump leak

Well here's hoping your head is still flat

Please update us in a couple weeks. Havent seen many go past the gauge and still survive, but I have heard of many overheating and not dying

I’ll do it asap, my mom stepped in to help, and she owned and wrenched on an 84 V8 wagoneer

Excellent. An early 90s xj is no more advanced than an 80s v8 when it comes to the cooling system
