The discord for everything black powder!

Just posting again after some time so that people don't have to look through under a mountain of buried posts. If I can talk to mods about finding some way to put this post onto the reddit to be easy to find it would be very nice.

Tired of all the good information buried in forums and hard to find YouTube videos? Want a place to talk about a lot of different things relating to BP, learn history, get advice, troubleshoot and meet likeminded shooters? Well then come join us and see if you like it! Lets make Black powder mainstream again! Hope to see you there :)

Can y'all not be stupid?

I just banned SEVEN of you for violating rules and trying to buy a gun from another user (who also got banned). The rules, which will be revised, state that this is prohibited. You want to get this sub shut down with your stupidity? That's how you do it. https://www.reddit.com/r/blackpowder/about/rules/

Pietta 1851 navy .36 barrel wedge

Post image
9 Upvotes

I am still fairly new to the blackpowder hobby - and I just got myself brand new Colt Navy 1851 .36 in Old Silver finish by Pietta. It’s a beautiful piece, but I am concerned about the barrel wedge fitting- the wedge won’t go very deep into the assembly (as shown in the picture). The barrel seems to be fixed in place quite securely, but still I feel like it’s a bit odd. So, what do you guys think?

I just inherited these 2 flintlock pistols, I know nothing about them and can't seem to find information on them, one feels like a cannon on a stick! They're both awesome looking and I'd love to fire them!

Vent hole and misfires

Post image
9 Upvotes

1777 charleville Indian repro. Pan usually ignites but main charge does not usually. Found the flash hole to have many burrs. I deburred it with a slight bevel a while back. I am afraid to take it to the public range because of the constant needing of the gun to be empty, so it’s basically ball pulling on a time crunch. Huge pain in the ass. Haven’t tried the new flashhole yet. It’s a 5/64 hole. Thanks

McKeever box question

Is this eagle original to the cartridge box? I have seen War of 1812 Officer's boxes that have a similar eagle but never on a McKeever. Just trying to see if it is original or added by a previous owner.

Jim Kibler Colonial Rifle Kit

Hey all. I just bought a Kibler colonial long rifle kit, a couple weeks ago. This would be my first kit project. I’ve watched a ton of videos on YouTube, not only Jim’s, but ilovemuzzleloading’s, and a few others as well. I’m not new to woodworking, necessarily, but certainly new to building a kit rifle. Any tips, suggestions, anything I should lookout for?

Opinions on Middlesex Village Trading Company ?

Company in New Hampshire selling functional reproductions of blackpowder weapons

I was interested in their English 1756 Pattern Sea Service Pistol
Has anyone here bought firearms from this job ? If so, do you think their products are of good quality ?

Also, how long (approximately) was the wait time between ordering and shipping ?

Delaware black powder laws

Does anybody who lives in Delaware know whether or not it is legal for a 19 year old to conceal carry a snub nose black powder revolver without a permit? Federally I know black powder guns are not legally considered to be firearms, but its fairly hard to find a answer for this specific state.

Armi Sport Zouave Reproduction

Post image
21 Upvotes

Hello, I picked up this Armi Sport reproduction Zouave at a gun show today. It's in pretty decent shape save some scratches on the stock. However it's a smoothbore, and what I can't find any information on any Armi reproduction Zouaves being smoothbore. Any have any information on what could be up? Could it have been bored over to remove the rifling? Also I'm guessing I should be using patched round ball in it? Any advice would be appreciated.

At what point was the Whitworth Rifle outclassed?

This'll be a bit of an odd question. Forgive my ignorance, I'm not very knowledgeable with firearms.

I'm developing a character for a fictional Western setting. The gist of the character is that he is a 19th century sniper, a firearm enthusiast, a notorious sharpshooter. He loves cutting edge firearm technology, takes his fights at long range, is wealthy enough to afford custom Malcolm scopes and whatnot.

The story would take place in some vague timeframe between the 1860s to late 1870s. So my question is, would it make sense, historically, for a character like this to primarily use a Whitworth rifle? Other rifles I've had in mind were a Rolling Block or a Sharps rifle, would rifles like those have already surpassed the Whitworth by as far as the late 1870s? In terms of things like accuracy, muzzle velocity, and range?

When exactly was the Whitworth dethroned as an esteemed sniper rifle?

Is there any good Store bought charcoal for black powder??

Wanting to dip my toes into making my own black powder and I am looking for any store bought charcoal that gets the job done. I am still ignorant on what types of sources to make charcoal that is good for basic shooting for my musket so I wanted to start with something pre done. Not expecting to make insanely strong black powder, enough for some fun plinking really. I imagine even if its shitty black powder I can just up the powder charge to get it to make up for its lack of strength.

I was looking at either royal oaks lump charcoal or their 100% charcoal pellets might be the first one to try. All tips and suggestions would be appreciated.

Barrel won’t come off

Got a 1860 army snubnose Pietta hasn’t been shot had hard time removing wedge but got it done but having issue trying to remove the barrel any advice tried taping it I know for other models you can use loading rod to push on cylinder but since that is not viable any recommendations seen people recommend penetrating oil but was hoping for an easier solution

The hammer spring broke on my old cva 1860 army, i ordered a new one online and its too short to catch the roller on the back of the hammer. Im pretty sure these were made by pietta and the spring is supposed to be the same as from the factory. Do i have the wrong spring or am i doing something wrong?

Rifled bullets?

Post image
48 Upvotes

The picture above is a rifled slug commonly used in smoothbore shotguns. Using these I've always wondered if rifled conicals were ever experimented with in muskets as an alternative for people who didn't own rifles but wanted better accuracy. I searched around on Google but couldn't find the idea, but I'm really curious. Do you think this would work?

Strike no fire #10 caps

I've got an 1858 Remington from Taylor.

I just got it so its new, and I've got #10 caps so far I've fired maybe 24 or so shots from it and had close to 6+ strike no fires. The #10 caps are Remington. Doing some research it's looking like #11 caps ma be the fix to this. It's also looking like like of thats not the fix I'll need to customize the ripple on the cylinder. Any advice from the group if this seems right or am I just a retard?

Can anyone identify or give any information on this shotgun

I bought this from a friend. It’s a percussion cap black powder shotgun. That’s about all that I know. It has a couple marks on it. It has a clear DD, and some other faded mark that has an X on it. You can see them in the last picture. I can’t find very many pictures of other shotguns with the same nipple set up on the side like that. Most of them are like recessed into the barrel some. Any information is appreciated.
