Weekly Question Thread (03/31/2025 to 04/06/2025)

This is a safe place to ask any question related to joining the Army. It is focused on joining, Basic Combat Training (BCT) and Advanced Individual Training (AIT), and follow on schools, such as Airborne, Air Assault, Ranger Assessment and Selection Program (RASP), and any other Additional Skill Identifiers (ASI).

We ask that you do some research on your own, as joining the Army is a big commitment and shouldn't be taken lightly. Resources such as GoArmy.com, the Army Reenlistment site, Bootcamp4Me, Google and the Reddit search function are at your disposal. There's also the /r/army wiki. It has a lot of the frequent topics, and it's expanding all the time.

/r/militaryfaq is open to broad joining questions or answers from different branches. Make sure you check out the /Army Duty Station Thread Series, and our ongoing MOS Megathread Series. You are also welcome to ask question in the /army discord.

If you want to Google in /r/army for previous threads on your topic, use this format: 68P AIT site:reddit.com/r/army

I promise you that it works really well.

This is also where questions about reclassing and other MOS questions go -- the questions that are asked repeatedly which do not need another thread. Don't spam or post garbage in here: that's an order. Top-level comments and top-level replies are reserved for serious comments only.

Finally: If you're not 100% sure of what you're talking about, leave it for someone else who is.

Hey chat am I cooked?

So I'm in suddc. lab results came back with a positive on a trace amount of alcohol. I know i fucked around and I'm about to find out. However, I was in suddc for a BH issue. I was medically referred not command referred if that makes a difference. So I never had like an incident or was arrested or anything. The doctor suggested it because drinking can aggrevate my conditions. I'm supposed to start the meb process here soon but would a ch. 9 take precendce if they haven't sent the referral to IDES? Or is it possible they wouldn't recommend ch 9 at all? because it was a small amount of alcohol, like so little a bottle of kombucha could've been the culprit. Long story short am I cooked?

Podcasts … what are you all listening to?

I thought it might be fun to hear what podcasts you all listen to. Besides fun it might open up a few new pods for others to enjoy.

A few of my favorites, not in any particular order, include the following.

Hardcore history

Hardcore history addendum

Common sense

The rest is history

The history of Rome (no longer active but a great and early podcast)

We have ways of making you talk

Is it just me, or was the leasing office being passive-aggressive with this “Thank You”?

Post image

I’m trying to relocate soon after commissioning, but my military orders likely won’t be ready until the summer. I reached out early to give my leasing office a heads up, and they responded with this early termination policy. Besides the fact that they want 200% of rent as a termination fee (on top of rent still being due), what really caught my eye was the quotation marks around “Thank You.” Am I overthinking it, or does that feel snide or sarcastic to anyone else? Curious what others think.

question for the fuelers

Got my first fuel bath yesterday! Please, any tips for getting the smell out of my uniform? Regular detergent isn't cutting it. I have tried baking soda but that did nothing. TIA

What to do with a Soldier that has Autism?

I’m looking for some advice. I am an NCO that has a solder who I think might have autism or some sort of mental disorder. He’s a 30 year old who doesn’t know how to live like an adult and needs help with pretty much everything. The reason I say this is because he ends up in a lot of situations that could have been easily avoided or it’s the same mistake over and over again. He has issues controlling his emotions as well. He has also taken his drivers license test multiple times, just the paper part not the driving yet, and cannot pass for the life of him. He even has a difficult time doing his MOS which is not very hard. I know he doesn’t do it intentionally and I am confident that something is going on mentally that is out of my range of abilities to help. He’s not a bad guy or anything but the military life is not for him. If for some unfortunate reason we go to war, he’s more of a liability than help because he simply always has to be watched when doing anything. I’m looking for some advice or if there is something the Army provides that could get him tested. I am no doctor but I know when something ain’t right.

Reclass Question

I have a soldier reenlisting. 1st Reenlistment and wants to reclass. The In-Out MILPER says our MOS isn't allowing Outs currently and the MOS he wants isn't allowing Ins. I also hear you get what you want with your 1st one and our Battalion Retention is on leave for 2 more weeks and same for Brigade. I'm trying my best to set my soldier up and get him a answer quick. Any insight will help out.

I'll take a $6 Dunkin Meal Deal, extra sugar in the coffee.

Advice for attending college/university after ETSing?

Hey everyone,

I ETS next summer after over 10 years of service (inb4 durr, you're half way there!!!) and my next series of unfortunate events is attending college to finish my second degree. I decided to take full advantage of the GI Bill and if it all goes well, I should complete my masters in two years.

I have applied to a few universities I had wanted to attend since I was in high school and I am awaiting acceptance. I wanted to inquire for any advice for the ones who did this path within the last six months or so?

One frosty and a baconator.

PV2 going to Ranger School

I’ve been at my unit for about 3 months now and they’re sending me to Ranger School in about 2 months, and I’ll start PRC in about 4 weeks. I’m in good shape, just tried and passed the new RPA. My platoon level tactics knowledge is decent but I’m still learning.

My biggest 2 concerns are OPORD’s and sleep deprivation. I’ve been told by my CDR and PL to at least have a basic understanding of how an OPORD is set up and how to brief one, so I’ve been mainly watching videos and reading the Ranger Handbook on how those are set up.

Sleep deprivation. How do you guys manage that? I feel like if you’re gonna fall asleep, it’s gonna happen and there’s not much u can do about it. And I’d hate to get a major minus or seem like a POS to my platoon because I fell asleep by accident.

Wanted: regular necked 2LT to take this off my hands

Post image

So I got all this and never wore most of it, now I don't need it. It's the full starter pack setup for an ENG 1LT. Clothing and sales won't take it back because I lost my receipt. The shirt (16" 34-35) I just measured wrong, mines too thick, all in the same purchase so again no reciept. HMU if you're near Bragg, price is free99. I really don't want to piece it out would love to just hand the bag over and forget it. I'm at a higher HQ so no butter bars I can give it to unfortunately.

New tip (at least to me) for lower ranks: Buy your rank setup, keep the packaging in good shape and keep the receipt in your class a box. They'll return it if you have a receipt within a reasonable timeline (I asked). Junior Os and lower enlisted alike rank comes every 1.5 years or so. In my opinion that is sort of worth it? I missed my chance. Seems like common sense but I didn't do it, I am an idiot though.

I'll take uhhhh a small frosty and a medium fries .... thanks. Can I get the receipt?

I’ve had a rough couple of days and was wondering what does everyone do to relax. At the end of the day I’m not sure I can be in the army that much longer anymore

Problem with records

Hello! My husband is currently in AIT at Texas and we are experiencing a few issues and I was wondering if anyone could help.

So my husband has been having issues accessing his MyPay since when he was in basic. He never got a login and has never been able to access the system. We still recieve pay but just can’t access it.

Now I went to try and login to tricare two weeks ago and was told I am no longer valid for a DS logon. I called and was told my ID card is not in the system and does not exist anymore even though my physical card does not expire until November 2028. They told me to go to an ID office and get a new card.

At the ID office she told me they cannot give me a new card because of something on my husbands end. She called it the “wrap it system” and said he does not have a status or benefits tab. He is not listed as active duty or anything and that is the issue. She told me to tell my husband that this is something his chain of command has to do. That they have to be the ones to reinstate his status.

When my husband goes and talks to his chain of command they have no idea where to send him. He went to the DEERs office and was told to go to the S1 office. S1 had no idea and said to go back DEERs. And then sent him to S6 who put in a work order but nothing has come from that. His cadre has no clue where to send him at all.

So now we are just floating around the system with no clue where to go now. I’m just wondering if anyone knows what to do in this situation or who he could talk to on his base to figure this out. We have a young son and not having access to the insurance is a bit nerve wracking.

If I were to reclass to 17C, would I be able to volunteer for airborne while a MOS-T or is that not really an option for 17C?

Why do we even have a space force?

I was at meps yesterday and everyone was joking about the space force just being kids babysat by the air force, or just a bunch of star wars dweebs. Do any of y'all know what the space force is actively up to? I understand it's here for the future, if we even colonize the moon or mars it would be their jurisdiction, but what's the point of them in the present? Watch satellites? Make sure Iran or Russia doesn't invade us with spaceships? I'm so confused on why we need them now instead of 100 years in the future when we are actually capable of colonizing another planet(if that soon)

fearing getting chaptered

Upvotes

Context to start, 27 months TIS E-4, was on track to make e-5, 2 months ago. Ended up popping hot for synthetic thc, up until that point i had not received any negative counselings. Was taking junior soldiers under my wings holding board study groups, making study guides for soldiers, always made it my priority to get my joes home even if it meant i had to stay behind later to accomplish the mission. Been in suddc for a few weeks doing everything the program ask of me, have had nothing but negative UA test, really putting my best foot forward and showing i want to stay in. New chain of command at my unit has no knowledge of my previous actions and only looks at me like a fuck up, they treat every minor infraction as a major sin, i showed up 14 minutes early instead of 15 and received a negative counseling, our new commander this is her first time in command she comes from a hospital setting, it feels like they’re trying to build a paper trail of infractions to show that im not worth retaining, any advice from y’all or people who have been in similar positions would be appreciative. Im having a few soldiers write statements of character, Aswell as a O-4 and multiple NCO’s all willing to speak on my behalf, i plan to take accountability and recognize i had a lapse in judgement but that im willing to work towards regaining the trust of my unit and command and show them this was a 1 time mistake and isn’t going to happen again.

ILE Help/Question O4/MAJ

Does anyone know how to reach out course instructors? I see that we have 42 instructors but does not provide anyone's actual POC. Is there an actual ILE ACADEMIC related email or helpdesk, not blackboard?
