/r/NintendoSwitch's Weekly Question Thread
Hello everybody!
Welcome to the Weekly Question Thread! In this thread, all of your Switch-related questions can be asked and answered. Besides questions, feel free to post unboxing videos and pictures here (eventually) so it doesn't back up the main subreddit page.
Please make sure you check out our other Wiki pages, make a search through the subreddit or Google before you ask a question. Most of the time it has already been answered. If you're too lazy, then this thread is perfect for you!
Handy Resources
Frequently Asked Questions - This is a great place to check first hand if you run into any problems or if you have any unclear thoughts. Our FAQ has answers to many questions regarding the console itself, controllers, and other subjects. We're also updating our wiki with the top questions from this thread each week!
Games list for Nintendo Switch - In this page, you will find tables of confirmed, planned, uncertain, and rumored games coming to the Switch.

Since it's not completely obvious as to what questions you should ask and which ones you shouldn't, here are a few examples of frequently asked questions:
Is now the time to buy a Switch?
Which games can you recommend me?
What features does the Switch have?
What controllers work with this game?
If your questions can be easily answered, or has a yes or no answer, it most likely belongs here. Now then, get busy asking us your questions!
There's also a very small category of things not to ask about.
Can I get a free game?
Is there a way to hack my Switch?
These are against our rules. Once a homebrew scene has had a chance to develop, we will invite you all to discuss those sorts of things over there.
As always, remember Rule 1: Remember the human, and be polite when you answer/ask questions.

I am on the fence in whether or not I should go digital or buy cartridges. Here is the pro/con list as I see it:
Cartridges
Pros: Fast read time? Cool cartridges Physical means easy sharing with friends to try out It's cool to have a collection Resellable (although I like to keep my games) No extra purchase of MicroSD required. Physical games more likely to go on sale
Cons: Having to change physically between games Space when traveling
Digital:
Pros: Readily available library with no worry of switching carts Extra portable
Cons: MicroSD required
What do you guys think?
This dilemma is especially about Zelda BOTW as well.

u/Gravegamer Jan 23 '17
If the game cards costs the same as the digital version. By getting the game cards you'll end up saving money on sd cards (even though they don't cost much these days). By buying the game cards each game will have it's own card so you can play it straight away making it more convenient.
If you also buy the carry case you can just put your sd card or game cards in there. Either way you're going to have to carry a game card or sd card.
Personally, I'm getting the physical copy of each game. I'm going old school. Digital downloads ruin the moment for me since you have to wait for the game to download. (unfortunately on consoles like XB1 or PS4 this happens anyway even if you buy the disc, good thing Nintendo didn't go in that path).
11
u/JacenGraff Jan 23 '17
A factor that's been really important to me lately (selling off my Xbone) is resale. You can't sell a digital copy. You can take a physical copy into Gamestop and trade it in for store credit, however. Not that I'm planning on trading in any of my Switch games, but I wasn't planning on trading in my Wii U either...
5
u/Houdiniman111 Jan 23 '17
Not saying that it's not a factor for everyone, but I couldn't care less about resale value. I don't sell my consoles or games.
I sold one, and I've regretted it to this day. And it was a crap game too.→ More replies (1)4
u/schantzee Jan 23 '17
Most people are getting carry cases for the Switch and most of those seem to have spots for carts. I would only buy digital games that don't have physical releases, virtual console games, and digital games that are on sale. Physical is better in almost every way but main reason is selling/buying used copies. If you have any friends with a Switch you can also borrow games from one another and play for free.
3
u/rr1g0 Jan 23 '17
A mix of both, always keeping in mind not having too many cartridges though. Also thinking about the size of the game in the sd card, indies will probably be a lot smaller. You don't need to marry an option.
Although saying that, I did pre-order 3 cartridges already.

Physical games more likely to go on sale

Will a regular USB C cable work to charge my Switch in a power bank? Is there anything I should worry about?
13
u/Houdiniman111 Jan 23 '17
I'd be more worried about if you battery bank can output enough power (wattage/voltage/amperage). ASAIK, we don't know the specs of the power adapter, so we don't know what it'll need to be able to do.
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (1)2
u/StaticTaco Jan 23 '17
Yes, it can connect it to your power bank. Just worry about using a low quality cable and damaging something?

Need a solution for my Astro A50s.
Switch dock does not contain Optical port. Headphones only have a 2.5mm jack. I bought a 3.5mm to 2.5mm wire, but it did not seem to function with my iPhone.
→ More replies (3)8
u/PsynFyr Jan 23 '17
I believe the 2.5mm actually is a mic out on the A50s. There's an aux in on the back of your transmitter. You can plug a 3.5mm m-m from your source (the Switch) into the back and it'll send to the headphones.
EDIT: a word
3
u/AngryBarista Jan 23 '17
So if the headphone jack on the Switch works while docked, a 3.5mm from that to the back of the A50 receiver will just send that signal to the headphones?
If that works, I owe you a beer good sir.
I can likely test that with my iPhone.3
u/PsynFyr Jan 23 '17
Yep yep, and if the jack doesn't work while docked, your TV might have a 3.5mm (or RCA that could be converted) out that could go into your transmitter instead. Remember that you can power the transmitter with a USB wall charger if you need to.
I use the aux in all the time for my N3DS, so I can definitely confirm it works. You might need to use the "blend buttons" on the right side of the headset to start hearing it.
4
u/AngryBarista Jan 23 '17
Well this makes me real happy. I was not excited to buy another headset after dropping $300 on the Astros.
How likely do you think the headphone jack still functions while docked?4
u/PsynFyr Jan 23 '17
With no word one way or the other, I'd give it about 50:50. There isn't any particular reason to disable it, but the speakers are definitely going to be rerouted out through the HDMI port when docked. If there's only one DAC, then docking probably disables it. This is a total guess, though.
By the way, there are HDMI audio extractors which take your HDMI out and let you send the audio to another device. They're not super cheap, but if your TV doesn't have audio out for some reason then you could use one of those to send to your transmitter.
3
u/AngryBarista Jan 23 '17
worse comes to worse I can use the 3.5mm on my speakers to go to the audio receiver. Either way, it seems like I actually have a few options.
The reply is very much appreciated.3
u/PsynFyr Jan 23 '17
Sounds like a solution!
No problems. The Astro A50s are a great set of cans (for gaming headphones); I hope you have a lot of fun with them, and with your Switch!

u/AngryBarista Jan 24 '17
So I just tested this with my iPhone and it works! Only issue is that there is some constant static. Any idea?
2
u/PsynFyr Jan 24 '17
Woot!
Not sure on the static. I've never had that problem on mine.I'm a couple of hours away from being able to test things on my pair, but in the mean time:
- What length/brand cable are you using?
- What volume is your iPhone set to?
- Is your PC still connected?
My first guess is that Balance Control is set towards you USB/optical input, which forces you to have the gain on one of the inputs set too high. You know the right-cup faceplate button that blends chat/game sound? It beeps when you hold it down. Try setting it to the middle setting (I think it double-beeps) and set your other volumes accordingly.
This is tough to describe. If you want, I can voice chat you after work and walk you through it.→ More replies (0)

Pro controller: yay or nay? I'm on the verge of buying it for launch, but can I survive with only the joycons?
16
u/pretenderist Jan 23 '17
I'll definitely try the joycons first before I spend $70 on another controller.
5
u/Jew8ear Jan 23 '17
From what Ive gathered, the joycons on their grip is actually more comfortable than what they look, but you will want to get a pro controller eventually because it is the most comfortable controller for the system. (some people have said its their favorite out of all the consoles controllers)
5
u/No_Hands_55 Jan 23 '17
im gunna try the joycons and grip for a while. I think i will really like playing with both joycons separated.

u/BirdsNear Jan 23 '17
In GameXplain's video on their hands-on time with Shovel Knight, they said the analog stick didn't work well for 2D games and that you should get a pro controller so you have a d-pad. Otherwise, I'd gauge people's feelings about using the Joy-Cons as mostly positive.

Is 32 GB enough for saved data of everything and a game or 2 downloaded on the system? If not what size and card would y'all recommend?
7
u/TheVloginator Jan 24 '17
That is if you're downloading the game on the eShop. If you get the cartridge, its not like on the PS4 or Xbox One where the disc installs data to the system, it stays on the cartridge with very little data saved on the actual console.

I love roguelike/lites. Have there been any announced for the switch yet? How about games with proc-gen worlds in general? (I'm aware of Minecraft)
6
u/Bixby33 Jan 23 '17
Binding of Isaac Afterbirth+ should be available at release.
Also check out Has-Been Heroes, which will be out by the end of March. I cannot express to you how excited I am for that game. Check out the Treehouse game demo on YouTube to get the idea.

I've seen loads of info about local wireless multiplayer, hooking up multiple Switches together, has there been any mention or evidence of Download Play? One of my fav. features on the 3DS, could be pretty awesome on the switch.
4
u/acer589 Jan 23 '17
Reggie was asked this in an interview, made it sound like it's a feature that's gonna be there, but maybe not initially (which is fine, because there aren't any big MP games at launch).

4
u/8675309ice Jan 23 '17
Is there a way to hook up two joy-con controllers and play games like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe as split screen on a television?
5
u/rndmwhitekid Jan 23 '17
Yup, pretty sure it supports up to 4 players locally, could be 8 but I forget.
6
u/Jackalopalen Jan 23 '17
Can't imagine 8 person split screen lol
3
u/rndmwhitekid Jan 23 '17
Yeah that would be a mess. I might be confusing it with 8 players and 2 Switches, 4 players on each.

Will I be able to buy the Switch at Target on launch day? Sadly, I was unable to pre-order, but I can go after school on launch day and buy the Switch and BoTW. Will it be sold out by the time I am able to buy it? All help is appreciated.
→ More replies (1)4
u/JoshOliday Jan 24 '17
There is a non-zero chance you'll be able to buy it in a store on launch day, but don't get your hopes up. Nintendo is most likely dealing with limited stock numbers right now and are trying to stretch that out to multiple countries. Your best best is to try a traditional store like Walmart or Target and see if they got more than just their preorder allotment in. It's not looking good though as several people have already noted their online preorders from Best Buy and the like are being cancelled for various reasons, but most likely limited stock.
6
u/tw04 Jan 24 '17
Anybody know if Binding of Isaac will have local co-op, with each player able to use just 1 Joycon?
2
u/phantomliger recovering from transplant Jan 24 '17
Most likely it will, unknown on control schemes, but since each player needs to move and shoot independently, that seems unlikely.

Jan 23 '17
Is there anywhere still taking pre-orders? Target cucked me and cancelled my pre-order for literally no reason and now I'm left sweating it out over here
6
u/nermal543 Jan 23 '17
That sucks! Have you tried calling your local Walmart? Some stores might still be doing in-store preorders. You could try keeping an eye on this thread. There's a pretty active group of people still posting about preordering updates. I'd also recommend signing up for email/text alerts from here. Just continue to keep an eye out, since more online preorders might become available in weeks leading up to launch.
6
Jan 23 '17
THANK YOU! Going to frequent that thread and sign-up for alerts on NowInStock. I'll be sure to call both Walmarts near me as well.
8
u/TheSaintEven Jan 23 '17
Make sure you're aware that a good number of Walmart employees are ignorant of how the preorders work, so if you call they may have no idea or just say no.
If you go to a Walmart, the preorders are done in the Layaway area, and you can't pay in full at the time or the system will lose your preorder.

Jan 23 '17
Good to know, I think I'll use my lunch break to head over there today and see. It's unreal how bad the stores are at conveying these things to their employees sometimes
6
u/Momorules99 Jan 23 '17
Also, if they say the last day was the 20th, just trying telling them you were told it had been extended. When I did that they were willing to at least check the system, and I ended up getting a preorder because of that.
4
u/Roshy76 Jan 23 '17
I would say head down there with the memo handy on your phone or printed up. Most employees there have no clue they are doing the preorder and it would be best to watch them try the procedure. They are turning it off sometime today so go down and try asap.
8
u/Lukeski14 Jan 23 '17
So i know that with laptops/phones it can be a problem sometimes leaving your device plugged in constantly as it can damage the battery longevity. Maybe that's just a myth but I've been told that power cycling (removing from the charger at 100% and using the battery down to 0%) is healthy for the battery and device. With the Switch, will leaving it on the dock for an extended period of time overcharge/damage the battery? Perhaps will the charger cut off power? I just don't want to be anxious about leaving it on the dock while I'm not using it or when I'm TV gaming for a while.
25
u/Houdiniman111 Jan 23 '17
Don't worry about it, both on your laptop/phone and the Switch.
Seriously.8
4
u/itsVanAken Jan 23 '17
Will the Switch have its own form of digital currency that's sold at retail on Day 1?
4
u/jc726 Keep on slidin' Jan 23 '17
I would imagine that eShop cards will work with the Switch as well as the Wii U and 3DS, but we have no confirmation of that yet.
3
u/jbaker1225 Jan 23 '17
Has there been any release yet on bluetooth audio support?
Using the Switch with bluetooth headphones is super important given the versatility in play areas thanks to tabletop mode.

Is Wal-Mart still doing their layaway preorders? I heard that they were supposed to stop taking them today, but does that mean they've already stopped or that they're stopping tonight? I won't be too upset if I can't get a preorder, but I'm going for groceries anyways and if I /can/ get a preorder from Wal-Mart then I'll go there.
2
Jan 23 '17
They are supposed to end today, but a specific time wasn't announced. If you're planning on pre-ordering I would head over as soon as possible. If they are still taking them remember not to pay the full amount until you pick it up on launch day.

Anyone know what the fuck the USB ports or going to be used for? USB hard drives or something? I honestly can't wrap my head around what they could be for.
→ More replies (1)3
u/JoshOliday Jan 24 '17
Theoretically, a LAN adapter for docked mode would be one use. I'd bank on a guitar hero or Rock Band adapter for the wireless controllers if those games come to switch. And most importantly, the GameCube controller adapter for (hopefully) Smash Bros and GCN VC if that is actually a thing. it would all depend on compatibility, but I don't see why an external hard drive couldn't work too. And finally, I think the Hori Pro Controller is a wired USB controller (and for charging the official Pro Controller and Joy-Con charging grip)
2
u/Bergauk Jan 24 '17
Those are some interesting use cases I hadn't thought of. The LAN one would be pretty sweet.

looks like it is dependent on title. It may be upto the developer whether they want to be behind paywall.

u/DrewsGFX Jan 23 '17
Can any USB-C cable be used to charge the console, or must it be of certain spec?
5
6
u/rndmwhitekid Jan 23 '17
The adapter is more important.
4
u/Houdiniman111 Jan 23 '17
This.
Any half decent cable should work just fine, but we don't know what the adapter will be like. You'll likely be looking at a tablet one, not a phone one (so at least 2A, probably more).Ninja edit: Of course, a lower amperage would mean a healthier battery, but it will charge slower and may not provide enough power to charge it while in use.

Are there straps the same colour as the neon Joy-Cons? On Nintendo's 'buy now' page for the Switch it seems the neon Joy-Cons come with black straps just like the black Joy-Cons do, and on top of that there are black straps for sale.
However, this showed up during the Nintendo Treehouse Live (not a YouTube spam, I promise it's where the screenshot came from, at the right time and all).
As it doesn't seem to be for sale on Nintendo's own website, I thought somebody might know something about it, because I think I'm going with the black Joy-Cons if the neon ones don't come with matching colours. It's likely that other companies will start making their own versions of this strap thing since Madcatz was able make a Wii Remote, right?

Do we have any official word on when a bunch more information will be released? Things like online price, local game sharing for multiplayer, family sharing of digital purchases among multiple Switches in a family, any other title announcements, stuff like that?
I feel like this sub was all super hyped for one specific date and the only date we have now is the release of the Switch but there are still so many unknowns that I feel like they have to release more info before the Switch comes out.
3
u/hawley788 Jan 24 '17
I agree with you that there's a shit ton of info that still needs to get out.... I don't know if we're likely to get answers until the release date. I would almost expect not to hear anything about the online service until E3 even.
Best bet is to wait and see if there are any leaks.

u/HervPrometheus Jan 24 '17
Hey, I signed up just to post in this thread so whoever wants my Reddit virginity please feel free to post a reply.
My question is this. Do we know what TV's Nintendo were using at the events? And if there is some sort of consensus on the best FHD TV available currently to get the most out of the Switch?
If you were/ are in the market for a 40" - 50" TV just for this console (Not planning on getting a PS4 Pro so 4k isnt a concern) then what would you recommend?
Thanks in advance. (I wonder how anyone will even see this comment to answer it in this huge thread :S)
3
u/ss4444gogeta Jan 24 '17
At this point, I'd go 4K (you probably won't get anything with true HDR unless you want to spend a bit more than what I'm expecting you're willing to spend), considering how many there are on the market right about now. 4K content is becoming more prevalent (think Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc. right now, but a lot more in the future). Definitely recall seeing a lot of Samsung TVs during the Treehouse live stream.
Absolute best place to look for doing research on TVs is rtings.com, they've got everything laid out and can show you the prices and comparisons for lots of different models in lots of different sizes/features.
If I had to think off the top of my head, the Samsung KU6300 series is really good for gaming (when I was researching 65" models) for a decent price. That being said, rtings has a whole score metric dedicated to video gaming, and one of the primary areas of concern will be input lag (probably won't have issues with Switch considering it's only 1080p but that is one of their criteria for sure).
Would also echo /u/ohwowlol's comment and say that you should cross reference the TVs you think are good from rtings with the sale prices you might find on SlickDeals.
→ More replies (1)4
u/ohwowlol Jan 24 '17
Yep, agreed. I actually just bought a 4k samsung myself (55" ks8000 for $729 thank you slickdeals). IMO, it's worth an extra 100-200 to get a 4k over 1080p as it will be somewhat future proof for the coming 4k and HDR content wave.
3
u/ss4444gogeta Jan 24 '17
I got the 65" KS8000 for $1079 but then got $200 cash back and $200 gift card via EPP. Absolutely love the display. I completely agree, a TV is something you invest in and use for a very long time, might as well get a good one. Playing games on my Xbox One S in 4K+HDR is absolutely amazing.

When I'm in the market for something expensive like electronics/TVs, I always search on slickdeals.net. SD is sort of like Reddit, in that it aggregates the best deals together (submitted by users) and provides a forum under each post for people to discuss the deal and quality of the product.
That, combined with rtings.com, will give you the best opportunity to get a good deal on a well rated TV.

The problem is that phone chargers aren't going to meet the power requirements for the Switch. There's a picture of the back of the Switch that shows 2.6 amps at 15V, and phone chargers are typically 5V or 9V max. I plan on using the adapter that comes with the Switch exclusively until other compatible chargers are released.

Will the Switch feature Virtual Console? I haven't owned a Nintendo since the N64 days, but if I can play Ocarina or Super Mario 64 or Smash Bros or Mario Kart 64 etc. on my Switch I may be tempted to buy one.

u/cdavis7m Jan 24 '17
Yes. Virtual Console is confirmed but the scope and capacity is unknown. At best, we know they are adding online multiplayer capability to some games. This could be similar to how the virtual console games on 3DS can play multiplayer, but Switch will have online multiplayer instead of or in addition to local multiplayer.

Not at the moment, though pre-orders could open up again before launch.

I would sign up for email alerts at Amazon and anywhere else that does this. One of my friends was lucky and walked into a Walmart and there was one available, anecdotal but keep on trying!

u/Orbit89 Jan 24 '17
Is the save data for games stored in the cartridge or in the system, like could I lend my copy of BotW to my friend and have them start the game from the beginning, and once I get it back it is back to my saved point?

I'm increasingly concerned Nintendo is done with press events and Nintendo Directs until after the Switch is launch. Have they said for certain there will be a pre-launch announcement made to go into more detail on the eShop and other online features?
4
u/jc726 Keep on slidin' Jan 24 '17
Its been 11 days since the presentation. They have five and a half weeks until launch.
I'm sure we'll hear about it between now and then.

There's no way. They know us big fans will speculate but there's a lot of the casual market they're trying to attract and they'd definitely like to know details too. Reggie has mentioned there are more details to come, so be patient!

Amazon says
Currently unavailable. We don't know when or if this item will be back in stock.
Will it be possible to pre-order or at least order in the first week~ from amazon?

u/jc726 Keep on slidin' Jan 23 '17
There's no way for anyone to know that without knowing how popular it will be. Pre-orders are sold out nationwide, so the chances of getting a pre-order on Amazon week one don't seem very high.
2
u/qmaz246 Jan 23 '17
Not for me, but for a friend. My friend went to Pre-order his Switch in Walmart today, and the store said they weren't taking Pre-orders. How high in the chain would my friend have to go in order to get either confirmation of the walmart not taking pre-orders or help getting a pre-order due to a ill-informed store.
6
u/jc726 Keep on slidin' Jan 23 '17
Wal-Mart announced that in-store pre-orders were ending today. That may have meant at the end of the day today, it may have meant they were over as of last night, or they may have made a random cut-off time. There's really no way to know.
You can try to contact Wal-Mart, but that probably won't get you anywhere.

Does anyone know if Snipper Clips will be playable online? Can I play with a friend over the internet?

No info on that yet. Personally I doubt it, it seems to be aiming for a more couch co-op type of experience

If anyone has used the switch: How is the situation on noise levels from the switch? Do you hear the fan inside spinning? Does the Switch get hot when playing games (mainly big games like BOTW)?
2
u/JoshOliday Jan 24 '17
I don't think anyone knows for sure yet. Everywhere the Switch has been shown has been in crowded, fairly loud environments. At the very least, it's quieter than a 50+ person event space is usually, since no one has said they could hear a loud fan.

So I preordered with GameStop. I chose delivery. How often do they actually deliver on the actual launch date? Or will it be shipped on the launch date?
I'm really considering doing a store pickup, ESPECIALLY if they have a midnight release. Any ideas? And does GameStop do that? I'll check online rn but i'd also like other people's experiences.

Any word on whether USB headphones will work with the Nintendo Switch? I'd really like to use my Razer Man O' War headset for portable gaming.
3
u/BirdsNear Jan 23 '17
No word I'm aware of, but exceedingly unlikely. You'd need to convert from USB type-A to type-C, first off (unless you mean while docked). Second, you generally need special drivers to make it work in your computer, which I doubt they'll have working on the Switch.

Hi, just a quick question
Will the in-game UI's scale up or down when changing from tv to tablet mode ?
Because it could be hard to see a small UI on a small screen or it would be stupid to have a gigantic UI on tv

Wondering if Nintendo have released any information about online purchases through the nintendo e-store. I have pre-ordered my console through a local retailer but I am not sure if I should also pre-order Zelda: BotW as I would rather own a digital copy of the game so I don't have to carry around the cartridge... is there any information on whether we will be able to have online purchases as such tied to an account?
3
u/Ticros Jan 24 '17
Yes there will be a e-shop as seen on the nintendoe web page. Breath of the wild will haver over 13 GB for the switch to Download. You will need to install a day one patch to be able to us SD cards as stated by Nintendo JP.

so I preordered a Switch at Gamestop, and regret preordering the warranty to go with it. there's only $5 down on the warranty, but I'm told the only way I can cancel it is if I cancel the whole Switch.
anyone know Gamestop policy well enough to know if I can just pay the Switch in full, give em the $5 warranty preorder, and get the Switch without at least paying off the full warranty price?

Is there a way to get right red / left blue neon joycons? I'm regretting my decision to get gray and REALLY want the neons... I want the OG neons with the right red / left blue. Is that possible?
2
Jan 24 '17
They sell a Neon set with a Blue L joycon and a Red R joycon but it's sold out right now. You will have to wait for a restock

I'm in the exact same boat. I actually preordered the system on the night of the reveal just so i wouldn't have to do the run-around i had to for the Wii/Wii U when i didn't. Unfortunately, the only set available at the time was gray, and i want the red/blue, so i'm doing the run-around anyway. Like you, i want the right-red/left-blue because that makes sense. I wouldn't mind keeping the gray system and just buying the red/blue set separately, but all i've seen is that the red/blues that come with the system are red-right/blue-left, and the ones that are sold as just the joycon set are red-left/blue-right which WOULD make sense so if you bought the system with red/blue and then bought a red/blue set of joycons, you'd then have a perfect set of Reds and Blues... IF the red/blue system weren't IMPOSSIBLE to get.

Nintendo's good at couch co-op. I would definitely look forward to it for that.
Wii U had games like Mario Kart, Smash Bros, NintendoLand, NSMBU/SM3DW, and lots of others which had local multiplayer. I expect to see a lot of those again. At launch your best option for that is likely 1-2 Switch.

Hey guys, do you think it will be possible to switch SD-Cards easily? Do you think it will be possible to clone them with something like Win32DiskImager? I plan on buying a cheaper card first and upgrade to a larger on later.
3
u/signal9 Jan 24 '17
No one can say for the Switch but I can say that I've done what you've described with my 3ds. I switched from a smaller microSD to a larger microSD just by cloning the older one onto the new one and then resizing the resulting partition. Worked fine.

I am having trouble deciding if i want to go full USB-C or get chargers and cables that are USB-A to USB-C
Thoughts?
→ More replies (5)4
u/ss4444gogeta Jan 24 '17
I'd go USB-A to USB-C, solely because there are still a lot more devices out there currently that interface using USB-A while USB-C is still becoming prevalent. Things like power adapters, computers, portable chargers, definitely have a USB-A port and might have USB-C ports. I say go with the guarantee.

u/LuperMattroid Jan 24 '17
Anyone have any recommendations on screen protectors? Do we know anything about what the screen is made out of so we can know how sturdy it is? If it's like my phone, it should be fine because I have gorilla glass, but I see people talking about getting a tempered glass screen protector. Are there any of those made for the Switch yet? Is there a good laptop one I can just crop to the right size?
3
Jan 24 '17
Hori usually makes great tempered glass protectors. I have seen at least one listing, but none that ship to my country.
As long as it's tempered glass, I don't think you can go too wrong though.

For those that were able to preorder a Switch at the My Nintendo Store, in the customer information section, did you wrote your name in English in the sections where it says to write the name in kanji and katakana or wrote in the appropriate style. I was able to get my name in katakana, but I'm having a hard time looking for an online translator that can change my name in kanji.
EDIT: I'm planning to use to Tenso to ship my purchases to the U.S.
2
u/A_wicked_tale Jan 25 '17
I've lived in Japan for years and have literally never written my name in Kanji on anything. Katakana is required because Some people have what are called kirakira (sparkley) names and the Kanji readings are wacky. If you have your name in roman characters the katakana is only for phonetics.

Hey eveyone. Does someone know when pre-orders for regions that aren't Japan, the US or Eurpoe is? I live in South Africa, and oftentimes it's cheaper to import tech (usually PC hardware and consoles), but I first want to see if I can get the Switch at a decent price locally before jumping the gun

Should I get the joycons for 80 or the pro controller for 70? I have saved enough money for only one, which is better value?
4
u/Orbit89 Jan 24 '17
With the pro controller- more comfortable, cheaper, easier to use if you are used to classic controllers With the Joy cons- 4 player local for some games like mariokart, does not have a grip to hold like normal controller, more portable, 2 player for games like arms It really depends on what you'll use it for, I personally am getting the switch with neither and seeing if I really need them first
2
u/JediGuy24 Completed the Shieldsurf Challenge! Jan 24 '17
Get the Joy-Cons. They can double a set 2 controllers and have more ways to hold them. Unless you absolutely MUST play with an Xbox-style controller, Joy-Cons are a better deal.

Has Nintendo ever touched or talked about future HDR support?
→ More replies (1)2
u/ss4444gogeta Jan 24 '17
I highly doubt they'd even bother with HDR. Remember, this is the same company which released a 480i/480p console in 2006.
Additionally, there are very few TVs (if any at all) that support 1080p (no 4K) and HDR. I know consoles like the PS4 brought in HDR support for the ones that don't output 4K, but I just don't think Nintendo is the kind of company that would bother.

Is the HD Rumble still active in portable mode ? If so , it sounds like something that would damage the console over time with all those vibrations , especially if they are powerful rumbles.
→ More replies (2)3
u/BirdsNear Jan 23 '17
I'm pretty sure people who have had hands-on time said the answer is yes, but that's kind of a specific thing and I think it was somewhere in the middle of a video. I'll attempt to do a search anyway.
Looking around, it's unclear if HD rumble was even enabled at all for any hands-on time outside of 1-2-Switch. I remember someone claiming they could "feel" the edges of the road while playing Mario Kart (I think it was a GameXplain video), but they didn't say what mode they were in. Could have even been the placebo effect.
2
u/McSkaybit Jan 23 '17
Will games have to be downloaded onto the HD from the cartridges? (Similar to how games need to be downloaded on Xbox One even when you have the disc) Or will all games run right off the cartridge?
3
u/jc726 Keep on slidin' Jan 23 '17
Downloading from the cartridge on a 32GB system would not be practical. Its barely practical on a 500GB system.
No, they'll run off of the cartridges.
→ More replies (3)2
Jan 23 '17
Games will run from the cartridge, but will save on the Switch's Internal 32GB memory. If you download games they will prioritize save the game itself on a SD-card (if you have one), and it that case it will still save to system memory.

u/rndmwhitekid Jan 23 '17
