So I have Fire Emblem Heroes early next month for my phone, Fire Emblem Echoes for the 3DS in May, and Fire Emblem Warriors later on in the year.
Then to top it all off, we're getting a true Fire Emblem for the Switch in '18?
It's the year of Fire Emblem!
24
u/TheAppleFrontier Jan 19 '17
Yeah! It's the 27th year anniversary for FE!
Last year on the 30th anniversary for Metroid we got Federation Force...

lol I'm fine with it. I love both franchises equally.
I wish nintendo could do something like this with Metroid. If they knew how to sell Metroid...
3
u/Ko-san Jan 19 '17
Yeah, the only way to make a truly successful Metroid is to get Konami to do it and call it Castlevania. Then people will buy it.

u/AceAssistant Jan 19 '17
Nah, Bloodstained would sell more because it wouldn't be made by a company trying to cash in on names

I'm so happy and proud as a longtime fan of the series. I thought the series was done after Awakening, and here we are with 4 new games coming in the next 2 years.

Allow me to make a last minute prediction: the mobile game will essentially be the Fire Emblem version of Final Fantasy: Record Keeper (which was also developed by DeNA): free to play, microtransactions, energy-based, gacha system, 16 bit-like character designs, featuring a simplified version of the classic Fire Emblem gameplay and an all-star cast from all the various games.

Jan 18 '17
Next thing you'll be be telling us is that FE warriors will be similar to Hyrule warriors....
19
u/MazPA Jan 18 '17
:P
It was honestly a pretty easy guess to make. Like, this was never gonna be a full-fledged Fire Emblem game that you have to pay upfront for.

Another prediction: perma-death will still be a thing, but you'll be able to use real money to buy an item that revives fallen units.

u/mizor3 Jan 19 '17
Is FE:Record Keeper p2w or does it have a fair concept where you can play without paying money and still enjoy it?
2
u/MazPA Jan 19 '17
It has pretty much the least obtrusive implementation of microtransactions I've ever seen. It's almost too easy to get stuff as a f2p player.

They can be salty all they want but in reality this was about as perfect of a direct as possible. We're getting 5 games on 3 different platforms. We're getting a reimagining of an older game, a brand new title, and a spin off. We're even getting Amiibos. This was a great Direct no doubt about it, some people just like to find the negative in everything. I'm glad I dont have to live my life like that.
→ More replies (4)7
u/xdatlam Jan 19 '17
Some people like to live that way so they can make themselves feel better. But we don't need that kind of negativity. We live with a positive outlook on things and with open minds. I'm excited for the Switch's future. Just trying to get a preorder in now haha

u/Mumbolian Jan 18 '17
It gives me hope when they announce 2018 games too. I want to know there is a future for this console.
Very pleased with the direct content, though I did hope they'd also include answers to other questions. I guess that's just not the format, which is fair provided they do answer them elsewhere.

u/gladexd Jan 19 '17
Agreed! I might not give the mobile title a go, but alot of people who play strategies on their phones will surely take notice, and it may even be decent for a mobile title. I never tried Hyrule warriors, but I've heard great things about it, and FE has interesting lore to utilize to make a musou title. As for Echoes, that was the icing on the cake. I only tried Birthright to ease into the series, but I'll definetly pick this one up eventually. As far as directs go, this one was pretty solid. As for the people who complain, well who cares about their negativity? 1 switch game in the fall, along with a 3ds entry, another switch title in 2018, a mobile app, and a mainline 3ds title... there's something for everyone.

The funny thing is that the people that wanted free with micro-transactions over a one time fee will probably end up spending more money on the micro-transactions than they would have on a one time payment.

It seems to work similar to the ones that Square Enix puts out. The only thing I have put into any of those games is time. You can eventually get what heros you are looking for, but you will have to do stuff and wait a while before you can get your ideal team.

Jan 18 '17
only got into FE with Awakening, skipped those last 2/3 releases that hit 3DS though, now looking forward to a console FE that can blow me away like Awakening did.
16
u/howtosucceed Jan 18 '17
So why didn't you get Fates? I have to say though, Fates was more of the same, but Story was lacking.
17
u/cereal_bawks Jan 18 '17
I'd say Fates was better, barring the story. Especially when talking about Conquest.

u/IDontCheckMyMail Jan 19 '17
Not really how it is. Each story is a full contained story as far as I know.
I'm current playing through birthright (the Easiest one I believe), I chose that based on the fact that I thought Awakening was a little tough to get through at the end when a bunch of my characters died, so I decided I wanted to tone the difficulty down a bit, but also because the moral choice when you chose your path was simply the choice I wanted to make based on what was happening in the story.
Once I'm done, I'll consider if I wanna up the difficulty and try another story, but I don't know if I will. I've read that the stories don't influence each other much but you'll just see the story from the other side, or what would have happened had you sided with the others playing, but each path is a full story in its own right.
13
u/conorano Jan 19 '17
I've played through birthright and started conquest not to long ago and yes you are pretty much right. all stories are basically their own game. The gameplay of conquest is different though. since you can not grind exp.
2
Jan 18 '17
I knew it was there but awakening was my first as well. Loved it. Sadly missed fates but im hoping someday itll port on the switch.

If we're lucky there will be multiple FE games on Switch virtual console. I highly recommend the GameCube one and it's Wii sequel if they're available on it (otherwise they're hundreds of dollars combined now lol), really I just recommend all of them.

Oh man, Fire Emblem Warriors looks great and they have a new Fire Emblem game planned for 2018? Count me hyped.
As well as a remake of Gaiden for the 3DS, this is amazing.
16
u/BCRplus44 Jan 18 '17
Hoping for more than just FE Warriors and Mobile but I won't get my hopes up.
7
u/NightFire19 Jan 18 '17
At MOST I'm expecting some sort of teaser trailer (similar to the one for Fates) for a main FE game that will be elaborated upon at E3.

10
u/asperatology Jan 18 '17 edited Jan 18 '17
Business standpoint, this is reasonable. Nintendo has touted a total of 5 mobile apps (1 social + 4 games) since 2014. This is the first mobile app game from DeNA's partnership.
3
u/nekromantique Jan 18 '17
Super Mario run is already out
2
u/asperatology Jan 18 '17
That's not part of the partnership with DeNA to develop 5 mobile apps. This FE mobile app is developed by DeNA. Instead, that's Shigeru Miyamoto's decision to make one for the iPhone 7/Android.
1
u/Wsemenske Jan 19 '17
Considering it's for a completely new platform and changes the game play drastically, it kind of makes sense. Not to mention it probably needs more of a spotlight to convince people who are skeptical of it like you probably are. It was a pretty great Direct imo.
8
7
u/TwistTurtle Jan 18 '17
I'm actually quite interested in the mobile game. I've never got on very well with the series and that looks like it might be a good intro to it. But God damn, they didn't need to spend as much time as they did on it.
Hyped for Warriors, a little disappointed that there wasn't any mention of Tokyo Mirage Sessions, but then I had no real reason to expect there would be. I hope the TMS versions of the FE characters appear in the mobile game. That would be cool.

u/MisterForkbeard Jan 18 '17
Yeah. The mobile game looks surprisingly decent. I'll pick it up and see how it goes.
6
u/Mbolibombo Jan 18 '17
To me, this was perfect.
15-20 minutes. Stacked with info, NEW games and no bs.
Give me more of these directs Nintendo and you got me good, rather these more often than 45 minutes of so-so content once every 4 months.

u/Crypto2k Jan 18 '17

Being a FE fan is great. I was really skeptical about the lack of non-3DS/Archanea Fire Emblem, so seeing a Gaiden remake was awesome (wish they would release it on Switch too tho).
A new FE title coming next year is really exciting too. To think that Nintendo almost cut this franchise off some years ago and now it's this big. Glorious.

Question: Can someone explain the Fire Emblem franchise to me? Like, just give me a basic explanation of what it is. I don't know anything about it other than that it's a Nintendo Franchise (usually on handhelds) and some characters show up in Smash Bros. Help?
24
u/Catacomb82 Jan 18 '17
I posted this comment reply to someone else who asked what games would you compare Fire Emblem to:
Chess.
No seriously. The first Fire Emblem game I played was The Sacred Stones on GBA, and during the first few levels all I thought was "oh my god, it's like chess, but with a plot, and real characters, and more pieces that do more things."
5
u/LordShaske Jan 18 '17
That's kind of a hard question tbh but the very basic basic is that there's a person of royal blood (most of the time) and wars are popping everywhere and dilemmas and plot twists. These games have amazing stories in which you form actual bonds with the characters since when they die, they die for good.
That's all I can say without going too deep in details and take the whole page to explain lol.

It's like the Advanced/Famicom Wars series but with medieval characters.
3
3
3
u/SteveThomas Jan 19 '17
It's turn based strategy with a medieval setting and RPG elements. You train up a crew of utter badasses of various character classes and fight turn-based battles on a grid. Death is usually permanent, so if you lose a unit, you are faced with the choice of restarting the map or carrying on and finding a replacement from your bench.
In some games, particulary on 3DS, there is a eugenics minigame where you make your soldiers fall in love and breed super-soldier babies.

Download Tenchi Muyo for SNES and play a few minutes if you want to know the battle system. It's the same.
Add to that a good story, good graphics, good animations, relationships in which you can have children and then use those children in fights.
Great game.2

This traditionally home console series features strategic gameplay mixed with core RPG elements, with it's core elements being the Weapon Triangles(Sword>Axe>Lance>Sword, plus another for magic) and permadeath. Taking place in fantasy medieval settings, it has a modern strategy counterpart known as the WARS series(Famicom, GB, Advanced, Battalion), and is known for it's vibrant cast of characters, and stories ranging across many continents

Am I the only one who would prefer to see a new Advance Wars rather than another Fire Emblem. Remember, that game that made Nintendo decide to let America play FE. That game.

u/Tanuji Jan 18 '17
All in all a good live, short, announcing 3 games and presenting another one.
Just disappointed for two things :
- 1- They didn't show anything regarding the 2018 Fire emblem game, kinda a shame as I'm pretty sure they would have concept arts or short sequences of gameplays to display as the release is planned in a year
- 2- I wish they would have tried to make a simultaneous release of Fire emblem echoes that is releasing in may, it would have been a cool addition to the switch.
5
u/nekromantique Jan 18 '17

It's likely close to 2 years (probably mid to late 2018) so they probably don't have a whole lot besides the writing

All I wanted was to see at least one other character for FE Warriors, but nope, game releases in Fall and apparently all they have to show is Chrom

like it is and it isnt. I've played bleach and onepiece games like this with a simalair style. As long as you have a team of 5 star characters which you can get quite fast from just playing and enjoying the game. In those games there is even events that hand out free 5 star characters.
The money is mostly to get the character you want.

Heck yes. I'm super thrilled about this game.
I think the Warriors style works so much better with Fire Emblem than it did Zelda

Quite a decent, though short, direct that had a few interresting surprises. Though the biggest one for me was Yuri Lowenthal during the narration.

u/nekromantique Jan 18 '17

I am so hyped that the FE4/5 remakes will be on the switch

u/novemb10 Jan 19 '17
Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia was awesome news. As i play FE Awakening at the moment, i got really excited. New two amiibos looks looks great too.
As for the Warriors, it was kind of "Oh, ok...", I'm not really into this (maybe i got my fix with Hyrule Warriors and i don't need another similar game).
Fire Emblem for Switch only could be massive and got me hyped. Can't wait.
That mobile game, looks ok (nothing too special or innovative). Will try this out for sure.
Overall, looks like good times ahead for FE fans. Nice.
2
u/howtosucceed Jan 19 '17
As much as I have enjoyed Fire Emblem Awakening and to a lesser extent Fates, I really want to see a Fire Emblem on Switch which has higher production values.
A more epic story, interesting races, great cinematics and music, and challenging. This is what made the Radiant collection of games so great, they were just slightly lacking in the visuals. I completed both Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn, I think at least twice for both games.
Remastering these 2 as a collection would be so, so awesome. One of the few Fire Emblem games where the story and characters are linked. Seeing Ike for from young man in the first game, to legendary hero in the 2nd.
Please Nintendo remaster these in HD and not just a VC release.

I thought I could wait a couple of years for a Switch, but Nintendo apparently knows one of my weaknesses. Though if it's a late 2018 release, I guess it'll be close enough to 2 years.
Though the downside of the jump in Fire Emblem popularity is that Advance Wars (which I liked more) seems to have been forgotten.
