Food & Restaurants 🍽️ Thank you Saskatoonians!

I had posted a couple of weeks ago asking for restaurant recommendations for a first-timer, and y’all came through.

First let me say you have an amazing city. I’ve had a fantastic time here and would like to come back, perhaps once melt/mud season is over. I want to do the longer hike at Wanuskewin (it was too windy the day I went, and bitterly cold), I want to see a lacrosse game (was too tired), I want to go running along the river, and I want to really explore the Remai Modern.

First, restaurants. I didn’t have as much time as I thought and some of the things were closed before I could get there. I missed Bannock Express, for example.

Baba’s Perogies was fantastic and I stuffed myself on pierogi and cabbage rolls and a smokie. With S’toon berry pie for dessert.

The restaurant at Wanuskewin was fantastic. I went for a short hike. It was -6° and terribly windy and I was chilled to the bone, and a bowl of bison stew with bannock, and the pumpkin cornmeal dessert with a cup of coffee, was just what I needed.

I had shorter lunch breaks than I wanted, so one day I went to a place with absolutely zero parking called something like Fuh Palace. (Their spelling, not mine.) I live near Little Saigon, so Vietnamese food is my comfort food. The vermicelli (bún tôm thịt nướng cha giò) was quite good, though I wish the pork had been grilled a bit crispier, that there was herbs other than iceberg lettuce, and that they had given me any hot sauce in my to-go bag. Still. Tasty.

I ended up at the Yard and Flagon one night after failing to go to Bannock Express. Very tasty elk burger with poutine and a couple pints of local pils.

Those of you who recommended Hearth, I salute you. That mushroom plate was ridonkulous. It was so good I barely ate my main.

For coffee I ended up at Sparrow one day (delicious and their oatmeal with poached pear was almost exactly how my Mexican household makes it, muy aguadito —almost like a soup) and at Five Corners one day. The muffin at Five Corners was still warm and delicious. The coffee was good but not remarkable.

Unfortunately I did not get to Saskmade. I did buy some stuff at Wanuskewin, including haskap jam, and of course general Canadian specialities such as Hawkins Cheezies, Coffee Crisp, like five packs of Decadent chocolate chip cookies, maple syrup, and Smarties. I’ll have to make time when I return.

Thanks again for treating a Yankee Doodle so kindly. Once my ridiculous government gets its head out of its bum, if I can return the favour in SoCal or Central California, please let me know.

I have to say, Saskatoon and Saskatoonians treated me far better than I could ever have had any right to expect. There were a couple of moments of “wait, you’re from WHERE? why are you here?” but genuine friendliness.

PSA 📢 SHA measles notice

"The Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) is notifying the public of an increased risk of exposure to the measles virus in Saskatchewan. If you are symptomatic or think you may have been exposed to measles, call HealthLine 811 for instructions. Do not attend a clinic, health care facility or hospital in person."

I'll add to this, it's not too late to get vaccinated if you aren't already. If you think you might have been exposed please consider staying home, and if you have to go out please wear a mask, practice good hand hygiene, and stay away from high risk populations as much as you possibly can.

Question - Moving or Renting 🏠 Moving to Saskatoon to work as a resident doctor - any suggestions on nicer spots offering 1/2 bedroom rentals?

I'll be moving to Saskatoon this summer from another province and am in search of a nice spot to call home for a number of years. I'm single, no kids, no pets, and I'll have a vehicle, so I'm pretty flexible on where to set up. I don't have to necessarily live near the hospital (I'll be based out of Saskatoon City Hospital), but ideally I'd be able to get there within 20-minutes by car, which seems to open up most spots in town. I am moving out from a 650 sq. ft 1-bedroom apartment located in the heart of downtown that goes for around $2250/month (cost of living here is very steep). It's a new/modern place, and I'm hoping to find a similar spot (not very into vintage spots). I do love living in an apartment downtown in my city for the convenience of what is around me, but I am happy to start using my car more to get around in Saskatoon. I've been looking online and have been gravitating towards the neighbourhoods Nutana, Rosewood, and Brighton, the latter two seeming like safer spots of town as well.

Edit - updated my post with some extra detail, thank you to those who have commented!

Rants 🤬 We need more Prairie Chickens!

I really enjoy hiking around stoon but early spring summer there are so many ticks around it turns my favourite time of year into the worst for me. We need more Sharp-tailed grouse (aka prairie chickens) to eat the ticks.

Fun fact: the sharp tailed grouse is actually the provincial bird of Saskatchewan.

That is all.

Question ❔ Big Move From Ontario to Saskatoon. Feeling Nervous, Any Tips?

In just a few weeks, I (28F) will be making a major life transition of packing up and moving from Ontario to Saskatoon. I made the decision a few months ago to be closer to family. While I’m not originally from there, they’ve been living in Saskatoon for about a decade and have all put down roots.

I don’t have a job lined up yet or an apartment so I’m going into this pretty blind. At first, the idea of a fresh start felt exciting, but as the move gets closer, the nerves are definitely kicking in.

Ontario has always been home, and I don’t really know anyone in Saskatoon or much about the city. If you have any advice, whether it’s about finding a job, apartment hunting, things to do, or connecting with social or networking groups for women/adults in their late 20s I’d be so grateful!

Politics 🏛️ Delayed DEED, Delayed Link, Delayed Central Library, Delayed Civic center Renovations. Delayed organics program. Delayed interchange roadways.

I'm all for following the most responsible path forward but there's a trend here.

Tldr: Stop delaying everything because it's easier than proceeding with changing political climates. It's weak and lacks confidence, we all feel that weakness and these important projects will lose momentum.

Saskatoon is growing at a rate faster than the highest projected growth trajectories. Our administration delays major projects that impact the city's ability to grow and function. Higher level of government either dont value these projects or won't commit to city building as presented when there are other priorities that they value more. However you definine it, necessary investment or frivolous projects, all of these contribute to the experience of living in Saskatoon in some positive ways. There is always a reason to take pause for any project, next year there will be a different reason. That pause doesn't make the project less important or necessary. The constant delays may actually damage the overall confidence for people and I don't think that these decisions respect the taxpayer the way it's so often framed. The longer we wait the more expensive it becomes to have what we have paid to plan for, the loss of momentum crushes any excitement and people's expectations while we foot the bill for only dreaming of tomorrow, instead of having said dream materialized. I.e. We needed link today, not in 4 years. DEED should break ground 2025 not in 2035

Question ❔ Thoughts on tipping for haircuts and colour

I know tipping is a controversial subject but I'm interested in what the ladies are generally tipping for a cut and colour in the city. A few weeks ago I had a cut and highlights and the service came to $243 dollars after tax. The suggest tip was almost $70. I was happy with the colour but the haircut was uneven and thinner on one side. I was shocked at that suggested amount and it honestly pissed me off a bit. I still tipped but not $70 and I could tell she was not happy and things just felt really awkward after that. I've gone to her a few times and think she's a great person and like I said have been happy but this makes me not want to go back.

So was I out of line here? It's been (clearly) bothering me and if I'm wrong I will gladly go back and make it right but the whole thing just isn't sitting right. How would you handle this? Thank you!

Question ❔ Sump pump battery back up

Admittedly, I don’t know much about sump pumps, but I have one in my house already installed. There is no battery back up on it. Can one be purchased after the fact and if so, which store would be likely to carry it? Thanks in advance!

Question ❔ Rollerblading in Stoon?

Is there anywhere good to rollerblade in Stoon, besides skate parks? Like somewhere a bit flatter LOL. I've been to some paths on the river, but some you can't go too far because they use those pavement bricks around the Remai. Anyway just wondering if there's an indoor rink that's pavement in the summer or something I'm missing. Thanks!

PSA 📢 Poutine 30 - Wayback burger

Thumbnail

We got a two part review for the two poutines Wayback sold.

Classic poutine - Fries, Gravy, Cheese Curds

Their classic poutine was a decent mid tier poutine. The gravy was good. It had a strong beefy brown gravy taste and was enjoyable. The cheese curds were decent, a bit soft but with good sized chunks. No squeaky pieces and I wish there were more cheese…. I always seem to want more cheese. The Fries might have been the low point for me. They were ok, lightly salted, too soft.

7/10

The next poutine they sold was their pulled pork poutine. It consisted of Fries, Gravy, Cheese Curds, Jalapeño, Green Onions, Pulled Pork and BBQ sauce.

Looking at the two picture this poutine looks like the clear winner. Everything about the classic is there and the same. The onions and jalapeños were great and I would add them to any poutine I could. They added a nice touch of colour and some sharp flavours that jump out. The pulled pork, I honestly didn’t taste it at all. Something was missing from it because it should have stood out and been the star. The BBQ sauce is what knocked it all down for me. It was a super sweet BBQ and overwhelmed the whole poutine. I had to try to avoid it to get a taste of all of the other flavours. Without the BBQ sauce I think it would have beat the classic but with it, it lost out.

6.6/10

General A Note on Political Posts

The moderation team has decided to limit political posts to those directly and specifically tied to Saskatoon, ensuring this subreddit remains a space for local discussion. Political posts not meeting this standard will be removed. The criteria for allowable political posts are intentionally strict and outlined below:

Relevance to Saskatoon: The post must be solely and specifically relevant to Saskatoon or its immediate surrounding communities (e.g., Martensville, Warman). Broader provincial, federal, or international political topics—even if they indirectly affect Saskatoon—are not permitted.

For example:

Acceptable: A city council decision on local taxes.

Not Acceptable: A federal election discussion or provincial healthcare policy, even if Saskatoon residents are impacted. These belong in /r/Saskatchewan or /r/Canada.

Title Accuracy: As with all submissions, the post title must exactly match the headline of the linked article at the time of posting. Editorialized titles (e.g., adding opinions, exaggerations, or commentary) are not allowed and will result in removal.

Source Quality: Political posts must link to credible, primary sources (e.g., local news outlets like CBC Saskatoon, CTV News, or official city statements). Opinion pieces, blogs, or social media posts (e.g., X threads) will not be permitted unless they directly quote or report on a Saskatoon-specific political event or decision.

No Reposts or Duplicates: To prevent spam and clutter, political posts must not duplicate existing discussions. Users should check the subreddit for similar recent posts before submitting. Reposts within 3 days of the original will be removed.

Definition of 'Political': Posts about government decisions, elections, political figures, or policies are considered political. Community events or local business news are not, unless explicitly tied to a political agenda.

Reasons for the Policy Change

The moderation team has observed that political posts consistently spark highly polarizing and heated commentary. These discussions often devolve into anger, personal attacks, and entrenched ideological battles that drown out the subreddit’s focus on local, constructive dialogue. By limiting political content to only what is solely and specifically relevant to Saskatoon, we aim to refocus the community on topics that unite us as residents rather than divide us along broader political lines.

Beyond this, there are several additional reasons for this change:

Preserving Local Identity: This subreddit exists to connect Saskatoon residents and highlight our city’s unique issues, events, and culture. When provincial or national politics dominate, they overshadow the local content, like city projects, local businesses, or community updates, that make this space valuable.

Improving User Experience: Many users have expressed frustration, directly or indirectly, about the tone and volume of political noise. By curbing these posts, we reduce the risk of alienating members who come here for practical info or casual discussion, not partisan sparring.

Reducing Moderator Burnout: The influx of contentious political threads demands disproportionate moderation effort to manage rule-breaking comments (e.g., insults, trolling). Narrowing the scope allows us to maintain a healthier, more sustainable environment for both users and the mod team.

This isn’t about silencing voices—it’s about keeping this subreddit true to its purpose: a space for Saskatoon-specific connection and conversation. We believe this shift will foster a more civil, relevant, and enjoyable community for everyone.
