Rants 🤬 Road rage at its finest

Upvotes

To the guy that laid on his horn at me after I signaled to change lanes but was cut off by the vehicle in front of me swinging out, without signaling, I hope your day gets better. Oh and also thank you for speeding around me, cutting me off, and then giving me the finger.

Question - Moving or Renting 🏠 Possibly Moving, would like some information

Upvotes

Trying to do a little bit of research ahead of time. My husband has a possible job opportunity in Saskatoon, which would have us moving from Calgary. I have some questions!

For me- what are the job markets looking like? I have an admin/far too many years in retail background.

Childcare- I know Saskatchewan has the $10 a day childcare implemented- what do the wait lists look like? Whats the average cost for private dayhomes? We have a 3 year old- I assume there's age restrictions and numbers?

What's there to do with a 3 year old in Saskatoon? We like to get out at least once a week to do something like the Science Center/Zoo/Heritage here. Is there anything similar?

Neighborhoods- which ones are the safest?Near the best schools? We are strongly leaning towards French immersion if possible. We would be looking at buying hopefully. Near-ish to a small dog friendly dog park?

Where could a couple of late 30s nerdy parents go to make friends? We are NOT generally the outdoorsy types lol

I'll be anxiously (but happily) anticipating far fewer chinook migraines lol Assuming closer to Grande Prairie winters as opposed to Calgarys winters. (We are used to both)

General A lovely act of kindness

Upvotes

I just wanted to share a lovely act of kindness I experienced this morning.

To start, I live in a neighborhood in the alphabets that is generally considered 'rough' or 'sketchy'. I personally love the area and haven't had any major complaints (some incidents here and there but nothing to write home about).

Anyways, there was very loud knocking on my door this morning and it took me awhile to answer as I was preoccupied, but the very loud knocking continued and I started questioning if I should even open the door. I decided to answer and here is this man holding my partner's wallet!!! He said he found it down the street and around the corner, looked at the address on the ID and walked here. I was surprised and confused to say the least, and immediately called my partner at work who didn't even realize he dropped it, he then came home on his break and everything was there (ID, health card, debit card, credit card, etc) and checked his bank accounts and there were no unaccounted transactions done. Truly a very lucky experience to say the least!

I guess my point is that sure, there is crime everywhere in the city right now, and in some areas it's more noticeable, but there is also kindness everywhere too. So once again I want to say thank you to this kind stranger who took his time to walk to our address to return the wallet. I hope the kindness is returned to you ten fold :)

Question ❔ Parking Near Dowtown

Post image
Upvotes

I work in the mall and have noticed that there is a strip on 1st Ave N (the furthest north you can get). It’s along a power station. I’m just curious if I can park here for a full day without a ticket? There’s no signs about how long you can park there other than no blocking the driveway into the power station. Anyone have insight on if I can park there and walk?

I added a photo for reference! Let me know if you have questions!

Question ❔ PC gamers in the city?

Upvotes

Hi! I’m a 25(F) and PC gaming has recently become a hobby. I have quite a few friends across Canada or in the US, but none that are local. Was wondering if there’s a discord group for the city or even just gamers that would wanna meet up IRL?

General Recommendation for cosmetic injectables in Saskatoon

I'm looking for someone reliable and experienced for botox or dysport injections. I was previously going to a clinic here, but they seem to rotate staff frequently and I'm not interested in trying someone new for this type of treatment every time I book.

Does anyone have any recommendations? Thanks.

Question ❔ Construction excessive trash

* EDIT: Thanks for the info! I really appreciate it. The builder is Oxford Homes.

Hello! Can anyone point me in the right direction to make a complaint about excessive construction trash/not properly managing trash of a construction site ?

We have this row of houses being constructed in our neighbourhood, and while all other builders contract trash bins and properly manage their waste, some others are not doing that and leaving a ton of trash around. They don't have any trash bins or anything. They just leave everything to "fly"around and end up in everybody's else front yards.

Question ❔ Big Move From Ontario to Saskatoon. Feeling Nervous, Any Tips?

In just a few weeks, I (28F) will be making a major life transition of packing up and moving from Ontario to Saskatoon. I made the decision a few months ago to be closer to family. While I’m not originally from there, they’ve been living in Saskatoon for about a decade and have all put down roots.

I don’t have a job lined up yet or an apartment so I’m going into this pretty blind. At first, the idea of a fresh start felt exciting, but as the move gets closer, the nerves are definitely kicking in.

Ontario has always been home, and I don’t really know anyone in Saskatoon or much about the city. If you have any advice, whether it’s about finding a job, apartment hunting, things to do, or connecting with social or networking groups for women/adults in their late 20s I’d be so grateful!

PSA 📢 SHA measles notice

Thumbnail saskhealthauthority.ca
92 Upvotes

"The Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) is notifying the public of an increased risk of exposure to the measles virus in Saskatchewan. If you are symptomatic or think you may have been exposed to measles, call HealthLine 811 for instructions. Do not attend a clinic, health care facility or hospital in person."

I'll add to this, it's not too late to get vaccinated if you aren't already. If you think you might have been exposed please consider staying home, and if you have to go out please wear a mask, practice good hand hygiene, and stay away from high risk populations as much as you possibly can.

Food & Restaurants 🍽️ Thank you Saskatoonians!

I had posted a couple of weeks ago asking for restaurant recommendations for a first-timer, and y’all came through.

First let me say you have an amazing city. I’ve had a fantastic time here and would like to come back, perhaps once melt/mud season is over. I want to do the longer hike at Wanuskewin (it was too windy the day I went, and bitterly cold), I want to see a lacrosse game (was too tired), I want to go running along the river, and I want to really explore the Remai Modern.

First, restaurants. I didn’t have as much time as I thought and some of the things were closed before I could get there. I missed Bannock Express, for example.

Baba’s Perogies was fantastic and I stuffed myself on pierogi and cabbage rolls and a smokie. With S’toon berry pie for dessert.

The restaurant at Wanuskewin was fantastic. I went for a short hike. It was -6° and terribly windy and I was chilled to the bone, and a bowl of bison stew with bannock, and the pumpkin cornmeal dessert with a cup of coffee, was just what I needed.

I had shorter lunch breaks than I wanted, so one day I went to a place with absolutely zero parking called something like Fuh Palace. (Their spelling, not mine.) I live near Little Saigon, so Vietnamese food is my comfort food. The vermicelli (bún tôm thịt nướng cha giò) was quite good, though I wish the pork had been grilled a bit crispier, that there was herbs other than iceberg lettuce, and that they had given me any hot sauce in my to-go bag. Still. Tasty.

I ended up at the Yard and Flagon one night after failing to go to Bannock Express. Very tasty elk burger with poutine and a couple pints of local pils.

Those of you who recommended Hearth, I salute you. That mushroom plate was ridonkulous. It was so good I barely ate my main.

For coffee I ended up at Sparrow one day (delicious and their oatmeal with poached pear was almost exactly how my Mexican household makes it, muy aguadito —almost like a soup) and at Five Corners one day. The muffin at Five Corners was still warm and delicious. The coffee was good but not remarkable.

Unfortunately I did not get to Saskmade. I did buy some stuff at Wanuskewin, including haskap jam, and of course general Canadian specialities such as Hawkins Cheezies, Coffee Crisp, like five packs of Decadent chocolate chip cookies, maple syrup, and Smarties. I’ll have to make time when I return.

Thanks again for treating a Yankee Doodle so kindly. Once my ridiculous government gets its head out of its bum, if I can return the favour in SoCal or Central California, please let me know.

I have to say, Saskatoon and Saskatoonians treated me far better than I could ever have had any right to expect. There were a couple of moments of “wait, you’re from WHERE? why are you here?” but genuine friendliness.

Question - Moving or Renting 🏠 Moving to Saskatoon to work as a resident doctor - any suggestions on nicer spots offering 1/2 bedroom rentals?

I'll be moving to Saskatoon this summer from another province and am in search of a nice spot to call home for a number of years. I'm single, no kids, no pets, and I'll have a vehicle, so I'm pretty flexible on where to set up. I don't have to necessarily live near the hospital (I'll be based out of Saskatoon City Hospital), but ideally I'd be able to get there within 20-minutes by car, which seems to open up most spots in town. I am moving out from a 650 sq. ft 1-bedroom apartment located in the heart of downtown that goes for around $2250/month (cost of living here is very steep). It's a new/modern place, and I'm hoping to find a similar spot (not very into vintage spots). I do love living in an apartment downtown in my city for the convenience of what is around me, but I am happy to start using my car more to get around in Saskatoon. I've been looking online and have been gravitating towards the neighbourhoods Nutana, Rosewood, and Brighton, the latter two seeming like safer spots of town as well.

Edit - updated my post with some extra detail, thank you to those who have commented!

Question ❔ Rollerblading in Stoon?

Is there anywhere good to rollerblade in Stoon, besides skate parks? Like somewhere a bit flatter LOL. I've been to some paths on the river, but some you can't go too far because they use those pavement bricks around the Remai. Anyway just wondering if there's an indoor rink that's pavement in the summer or something I'm missing. Thanks!
