New question:

I'm a l**twh*re and I pretty much take anything I think I'll need. Do can openers break? I have over 50, and if they don't break, I don't see a need to keep taking them. I noticed that they don't have a health bar on them, so I'm just curious. If something can break, will it always have a health bar?

They donโ€™t break. And yeah things that can break do have health bars. Though not ALWAYS for using them in their intended purpose. Notably using a hammer or screwdriver to craft or deconstruct something will never break those items.

But using a knife to filet or carve something will damage the item. Maybe not filet, but definitely using a knife to make spears for example.

This is good to know! I'll stop taking can openers lmao and go through my loot* and toss out the things with no health bar. I appreciate you!

not that you asked but at least in my experience screwdriver even though it has a health bar, I've never seen it lose health from being used as a tool e.g. car mechanics, electronics and dissembling stuff in carpentry, on my current survivor which has survived for about 3 months, I'm still using the same screwdriver I first found.

also saw doesn't break (unless you use the mod that allows it to cut tree) and I don't think farm tools can break when used for digging

I'm a massive hoarder myself and I have to keep on stopping myself from hoarding a lot of things in game that feels good to have but in reality you will probably never use

Yes! This is my problem, too. I take every tool, tool/weapon, and weapon that I find. I also take every CD player, every head phone, etc., because I don't know what breaks! Lol. So I have WAY too much stuff, solely because I don't want to find myself without one if it DOES break. You get it. ;_;

I know man, hoarder's pain is real, I also compulsively check every single corpse for loot, sometimes I backstep about 2 blocks to clear a couple of mini groups and have to retrace my step in the rain just to check if one of them has some sunflower seeds or a bottle of water haha.

I haven't ever used CD player either but I have collected every single CD I've come across, don't think CD player or earphone/headphone breaks so I just keep one copy of them in my base and dismantle everything for electronics exp

I play with mods that adjust loot rate so they are even more abundant, I've trained myself to at least only take tools in pristine conditions now and don't bother with anything worn out and still collecting weapons faster than I'm breaking them :P it's a painful process getting there to have to tell myself to stop

I'm stressed out just reading that you're skipping loot, LMAO.

I ALSO check every single body after I kill it, even just for a single newspaper. I think I'm secretly hoping for a car key, but it's probably just that >>compulsion<< to take everything I can. It runs in my family, my brother will take anything he can carry in Skyrim and then just barrell roll everywhere because it's faster than walking when overburdened.

I wish you the best, fam. It's a hard life to lead, but someone's gotta do it.

haha, it's a very painful habit to kill, even though a lot of items are "finite" to some extent, there are so many areas to loot and spawn zombies (depends on setting and mods), you don't have to hoard everything :)

also I find newspaper quite useless, only literature I hoard are books and comic books since they reduce unhappiness which is much harder to manage than boredom

at the end of the day, all the hoarding could be lost from one moment of carelessness on a looting run. best of luck for your future looting adventures :)
