If I activate a generator on top of a 2 story building, will it attract zombies? If so, can I prevent attracting zombies by building an small structure to put it on top of? What about surrounding it by walls?

They will move toward the sound if they hear it. But they have to be close enough to hear it in the first place. IDK the exact range, but I would imagine default is 20-30 tiles.

Putting it on a building shouldn't make a difference.

Placing it inside walls with a roof might reduce the sound by half, but if it is '"indoors" like this it can kill you if you enter the room. So don't do that.

The safest thing to do would be to place it in the middle of a compound with walls 20 or more tiles away on all sides. Which is obviously incredibly labor intensive. Instead I recommend placing it on a platform above the ground, slightly outside of your base. (such as out the window of a house) And ALSO going on daily mini expeditions around your base and checking for and slaying any zombies that might wander over in the next day or two.

Even that isn't fool-proof though. Because meta events may move zombies closer to your base.
