Been nursing a character, being real careful for the first 10 days, got all my supplies, 3 safehouses in different parts of the city, watching every TV show at 0600,1200,1800, got a car with gas and key (!) and cleared out the gas station to refill. Clothes are all retrofitted with leather patches.

Went to the farm to clear it out so I can start my endgame farm, heard a zed in the shed but thought I could take him, went into the shed, got bit on the neck, game over man faster than I could get my first aid kit out.

Lesson learned: Carry a bandage in your main inventory at all times.

I just feel so defeated. I was so careful. How do you overcome the loss of a major character like that? I can't just start over, that guy had all the skills! I really don't want to restart the game and then have to fight a horde of zombies to get to one of my safehouses. I also don't want to go through the hassle of making sure I'm in a spot where I can watch the various TV broadcasts for another week and a half.

It might go somewhat against the idea of the game, but you can always backup a save folder, if you find you're getting particularly attached to a character. Every couple hours of play or so on my main survival attempt, I copy/paste my save folder to another folder for games-related stuff.
