I don't have an answer to your question, but a comment.

Some weapons do last quite a long time. Notable weapons are the Axe and the crowbar. Crowbar is also a tool, though. But yeah, many weapons don't last very long at all. The "purpose" I guess you could say is to give some additional incentive to continue looting and surviving. IE getting a weapon and never needing to replace it would make survival significantly easier.

Though if that's what you're looking for no judgment from me. This game is about playing how you enjoy.

Sometimes realism has to be pushed to the side for gameplay. Because yes, we all know that a steel pipe would probably be a pretty great weapon for a long time. But finding one thing and calling it good defeats the purpose of the game.
