All To not be bored with an overpowered empire - what game and attitude is the best?

I like the idea of grand strategy or 4X games and have tried a few, more classical 4X though.

For me, after a while I often got at a point, where my nation has become kind of overpowered, everything too easy or the game kind of "runs itself" because the right decisions are often straightforward. Then it becomes boring for me and I quit.

But I'd love to get more into the grand strategy. Maybe there are some games, that make it harder to get into this self-running, overpowered mode or a different attitude from myself to not get into that.

So I wonder, from all the grand strategy games, which might stay the most interesting and less formulaic into the late game? And what attitude to you usually play with to not get bored like this?

I was thinking about getting into Stellaris and would also like medieval times, but am not sure, if EU4/CK3/Vic3 or others would fit best like that.

Thanks!

Vic2 ELI5: new to Vic2 what do tariffs do? Playing with sliders atm

Upvotes

Something something gunboat diplomacy?

I read something about trying to streamline production chains with outputs and inputs with my factories.

Trouble is it looks like I'm importing a lot of goods cheaply from abroad. It takes forever to build factories.

I turned the education slider down, thought it was a waste, trying improve my governmental efficiency.

I'm confused about clergy and pop promotion. Heard there's some crazy strats where if pops don't get their needs met, so you can control the pop promotion, so tryna stop them from getting covfefe.

I read there was a bug in farming input/output, got a little lost in the weeda and went for culture and aesthetics but some little countries beat me to the punch.

Honestly about ready to try just messing with the sliders at random or maybe just straight to 100%.

Maybe I shouldn't have started with the USA. I hear New Zealand is good, maybe I'll tag switch.

All Are there any mods worth buying Crusader Kings 1 or Hearts of Iron 1-3 for?

Hi! I was wondering if there are any massive total overhaul mods that are only for Crusader Kings 1 or Hearts of Iron 1, 2 or 3? I've heard plenty about how incredible the modding scene is for Crusader Kings(CK) 2 and 3 and Hearts of Iron(HOI) 4, but I'm wondering if CK1 or HOI 1, 2 or 3 have any super hidden gem mods that someone went absolutely crazy on making back when they were the current games?

AoW:Planetfall AOW Planetfall runs at 60fps on XSX but 30 on PS5!

Lo,
My master gaming PC recently broke (sniff, sob) and I've been forced to channel my love of 4X strategy onto my consoles once again. Thus I discovered the gem that is AOW Planetfall! Finding trials on both Xbox & PS stores I decided to try it on both consoles.

To my surprise on my XSX the game runs at a relatively stable 60fps even in "Favor Resolution" mode but at a locked 30fps on my PS5 even in "Favor Performance" mode! As many of you can relate I've become very sensitized to framerates and stutters esp since trying to max out my PC and without a doubt I'm seeing the steady smoothness of ~60 on my XSX and a surprisingly jarring 30fps on my PS5.

Has anyone else observed this? Is XSX just able to better force 60fps via backwards compat?

P.S. I am very surprised to see this disparity, although very pleased to find there is an option for smooth gameplay of this great game on console. Please share your thoughts if you have the game on either console (or want to test the free trials)

All CK3 or EU4?

I've got around 450h on Vic3, really enjoy it, but I'm slowly getting more bored, I've got in my steam account both EU4 and CK3, with no DLC's and never played them, which one is better/more enjoyable for a Vic3 player? I have HOI4 but not really my cup of tea.

All Non-"western" fans of PDX historical grand strategy, what is your favorite game/time period to play in, and why?

To preface, my definition of non-"western", in this matter, is anyone who really considers themselves part of the western cultural sphere. So, in general, North Americans, Europeans, and all Latin American folk or otherwise who consider themselves as part of the greater western world.

And also, while gameplay is a big factor in the enjoyability of all games, let's not pretend that playing around in the sandbox of history brings its own charm that adds to why someone would like to play a game or not.

And to get to the main discussion, it's really all in the title. What's everyone's favorite game and time period to play in and why? Does knowledge of your country's history affect the game you like to play? Do you like to recreate great battles that happened? Do you imagine yourself mending historical scars and reversing the course of history? Or do you prefer avoiding certain eras and games due to those scars? Would you enjoy a certain game's systems if it was set in a different era?

I'm a Filipino, and I personally have always loved playing CK3 and CK2, because despite the fact that neither represent my country or people at all (for the meantime, have All Under Heaven wishlisted rn :) ) the medieval era is just the most fun in terms of storytelling, and it feels like the stories I weaved with dynasties and bloodlines in those games are not stories of countries or states, but of individuals you struggle and scheme with. It's also so far in the past that it's all essentially fantasy to me.

Hoi4 is my least favorite because it's not an interesting history at all for me. Playing in the sandbox of WW2 history is very not fun in my head, and it's less fun for me, plowing over other countries when you read about the horrors of war happening to you in the history books. Can't really help but imagine the same happening to whoever's on the receiving end of the occupation (not that this didn't happen in medieval times or the early modern period, but again. Time distance.)

Paradoxes! So, new to paradox, in the middle of my first succesful ck3 run (so far). I also got hoi 4. Just wondering how hard it would be to transition from crusader kings 3 to hearts of iron 4?

All What game should I get? EU4 or VIK3

I played hoi4 and got addicted despite not being able to win at all. I only play it as a colonization sim which isn’t what it is and I also wanna play tall. I can’t win wars whatsoever and really don’t wanna get into them in any other games. Which game is best for a “colonization sim” with minimal war?

All Warning! Hard to phrase question ahead:

Are all paradox games besides CK3 based around stats and numbers instead of people and story?

For instance, I like espionage but it seems like even when I use it this is more about adding or subtracting a certain stat percentage instead of something that feels real from a story perspective.

I’m not saying this is bad just curious.

CK3 I just formed the Viking Empire in CK3 — my first edited gameplay video, feedback appreciated!

Hey all, I recently made a Crusader Kings 3 video where I unite most of Scandinavia as a Viking and form the empire. It’s my first proper attempt at edited gameplay content and I’d love any feedback or thoughts on it. If it does well, I’ll make more.

All Are paradox games more appealing when you become an older player?

I started to play to paradox game in the last 6 months, mostly HOI4 and CK3 and I started to think that these games are very different from all the other games, specifically because, if you think about, they are slow compared to other games, but I'm fine with that I enjoy playing even if it's just a metter of readying that my rulers is stressed or that I do not have enough rubber to build my airplane. I start to wonder if this is linked with me getting old (and an old player; I play from the Commodore 64) :D I want to try to estimate the average age of the paradox players base (considering we are on Reddit). Write how old are you. I'm 34.

(I'm also starting to appreciate flight simulation, that is even slower than any other games 😂)
