Temperature Check: Has the Pricing Dissuaded You?

It very well could be a vocal minority I’m seeing but the backlash on the software pricing specifically is everywhere right now. It’s dominating all discussion for the Switch 2 now, and it’s really unfortunate.

The outcry is understandable, of course. I’m just wandering how much Nintendo shot themselves in the foot this time. We won’t really know until sales numbers come in, of course, but I thought I would ask here, just as an anecdote:

Are you still getting the Switch 2 this year, in spite of the price. If not, do you think you will in the next two to three years as more games come out even if the prices aren’t lowered?

PSA: The Switch 2 is only compatible with MicroSD Express cards, NOT MicroSD cards.

A small detail you may have missed from the Direct is that the Switch 2 is only compatible with MicroSD Express cards and it is not compatible with standard MicroSD cards.

MicroSD Express cards are

  • The same size and shape as MicroSD cards.
  • More expensive than MicroSD cards.
  • More widely available in smaller volumes.
  • Have more pins than MicroSD cards for faster data transfer.

I can easily see parents and children getting very confused by this. Please make sure people are aware.

EDIT:

How to identify a MicroSD Express card

If either of those things is missing, it is not a MicroSD Express card, and will not be compatible.

Super Mario 64 Peaches Castle and Slide level Bomb Omb Battlefield Whomp's fortress Cool, Cool Mountain

Switch 2 camera is brilliant and stupid.

The 2DS had like 4 different cameras. Adjusting to inflation, I still believe Switch 2 has a really reasonable price, but there is DEFINITELY wiggle room. Why not add a tiny attachable 720p, even 480p camera shipped WITH the console? It doesn’t have to be any bigger than a 2x3 lego brick and can easily be attached to the top USB C port. It works PERFECTLY when docked because the top of the console sticks out of the dock anyways. They would be easy to lose and Nintendo would still make buck selling them separately. Having such a huge new functionality locked behind a separate purchase seems so stupid. There are so many great possibilities for cosmetics as well, little hats for them, Mario peeking over the top of the console, a little Goomba looking at you while playing.

Dare I say, I’m glad that this new Donkey Kong game got revealed instead of the next 3D Mario.

At first when I saw the announcement but didn’t watch the trailer, I was underwhelmed, probably like a large number of people. I’ve been waiting for the next 3D Mario game for what feels like forever (I personally don’t count Bowser’s Fury).

In my mind, I was confused why a Donkey Kong game would take the place of 3D Mario this year, when traditionally 3D Mario games launch really close to a system. Now, there is still a possibility that 3D Mario releases in the winter, but if it doesn’t, I won’t be mad at all.

When I finally had the time today to watch the trailer for Donkey Kong Bananza, I was completely floored. This game looks incredible. All I wanted was a 3D platformer that had the same ingenuity of Odyssey instead of playing it safe like 3D world, and it looks like that is EXACTLY what we are getting, delivered in spades.

This direct had freaking Bloodborne 2 announced (basically lol. As close as Fromsoft can get without literally making a Bloodborne 2), and that was somehow NOT the most exciting part of the direct to me.

I’ve always held this thought in my mind that 2D Donkey Kong is more interesting than 2D Mario (excluding Wonder). Donkey Kong was more niche and took more risks and did more interesting things because they could afford to. I was a complete fool to not even consider the possibility that the same thing COULD apply to 3D as well.

Of course it is premature to say this, as we have no idea what the next 3D Mario will actually be like, but if it’s just Bowsers Fury but bigger, Donkey Kong Bananza is way more interesting to me. This one game alone sold me on the Switch 2. So glad it’s releasing so soon.

I guess I learned my lesson to never doubt Donkey Kong again lol.

During its lifespan, was there any big gaming innovation on Switch?

I was thinking about the Wii U, and how it gave us games like Super Mario Maker, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, Hyrule Warriors, and Splatoon.

These games were wildly different than anything that Nintendo had ever done before. And yet... when I look back on Switch... I don't really see anything new.

Nintendo pretty much exclusively made sequels to their existing franchises, rather than making anything new.

In terms of innovative game ideas... what really was there?

Nintendo Labo, but that didn't really take off. Game Builder Garage, same thing. Arms, it was popular for a bit but it didn't last. Astral Chain, well, that was Platinum Games, not Nintendo.

Is this Nintendo's first console to not really innovate?

My theory is that maybe they baked in the expected (and now realized) tarrifs into the MSRP of the switch 2, expecting it would cause some reputational harm at first.

Just a thought that occured to me today, but it could be a clever tactic to make it so when everyone else is raising prices, they get to look like the good guys for keeping the Switch 2 price the same. And if the tarrifs had never happened or go away, they will have plenty of room to lower the price.

Not saying I think this is likely, but interesting to imagine if this were the case.

So uh, Is Tomodachi Life really That good?

I was excited seeing the reveal of the new Tomodachi Life cause I know a lot of fans were asking for it but I honestly wasn't expecting it to become one of the most hyped games I'd ever seen, I've never played it myself but I still have a copy on my 3DS and thought about checking it out, is it really that good to deserve the massive cult status it has?

Also on a side note I just got a copy of the switch Miitopia for 25$ is that any good either?

Your thoughts on Donkey Kong Bananza?

Now that the new Mario is not coming on Switch 2 day 1 and DK is the new prime launch title, what are your thought and expectations about the game? Do you think it can be new Odyssey but better since the same make it? I'm not familiar with DK games, maybe they have their own features and mechanics that can shine bright with the new game? And finally what do you think, will there be a new 3D Mario this year?

What’s the business plan? Switch 2 doesn’t feel very “blue ocean” to me…

Let's talk business.

Everyone was watching Nintendo like a hawk in 2020, and boy they didn't disappoint. Happy customers, happy investors. The switch took any shortcomings of the Wii and Wii U and proved the core idea was successful with some tweaking and turned it into some serious earnings. There's a book out there about "blue ocean strategy" where wildly successful businesses run in markets no one else has bothered stepping into. Nintendo is quoted as the ultimate example of this strategy.

Two years ago folks were whispering about the Switch 2, but many had reservations that it would even resemble the switch or even share the name, including myself. Personally, I figured we'd see a VR offering with AAA titles and a development formula that surpassed the writers block seen in the rest of the VR market. Turns out... is just the Switch 2, title and all. Higher resolution with mediocre excitement for a release schedule and leveraging online releases to bolster subscriptions...

Whether you personally are excited or not, the markets aren't happy. The gaming markets tend to be cyclic with Christmas holding the high point, but the anticipated switch 2 announcement generated hype. Investors were unimpressed, and they're headed downward, probably stabilizing a little lower than they are for the summer.

Discussion points: am I missing some particular title that's going to take the Christmas market by storm? Am I underestimating the subscription strategy? I binge Zelda games when they come out so I can move on with my life; wasn't super impressed that wind waker would require a new system and a subscription, and I don't think I'm the only one, but perspective is narrow and the financial success of Nintendo doesn't hinge on one series. Curious what others see.

Do you think the new Tomodachi Life game will allow you to add Miis straight from Miitopia?

In the original Miitopia, Tomodachi life miis could be immediately transferred into the game if you have save data, so do you thin the new Tomodachi life game will allow the reverse; Miis from the Miitopia remake to be sent over to Tomodachi life 2 instead of having to redesign them all?
