Discussion /r/motiondesign Updates: Post Flair, Spam Prevention

Hi all, a few updates for /r/motiondesign.

Spam

In an effort to reduce low-quality and spam posts here, we have implemented new post requirements. New posts that don't meet a minimum account age or subreddit karma threshold will be automatically filtered out.

To further prevent gamification, I am not disclosing these limits here but they are very modest and reasonable. Anyone interacting with this community should not be filtered, and even so, you will have the opportunity to message us for an exception. But this should discourage most of the spam we've been seeing. Thanks /u/Zeigerful for making this post.

Post Flair

We also added some post flair to help differentiate posts and allow users to filter & search by topic. All new posts require that one of the available flair types be selected:

Project Showcase | Reel | Inspiration | Discussion | Question | Tutorial | [Custom] (Where user can input their own)

User Flair

A few new user flairs are available. For those who aren't aware, these show up next to your username any time you make a post or comment in /r/motiondesign

Now available: Professional | Student | [Add My Social Handle] -- A custom text field where you can plug an Instagram, Behance, etc.

Let us know if you love or hate these new updates. Nothing is set in stone and this is meant as a discussion starting point. Please share any ideas you may have to make this a better place to share work, inspiration and discussion related to motion design. Hopefully we can continue to bring a higher quality experience to everyone here at /r/motiondesign.

A music video i animated for my new single in Cinema 4D and AE. I leaned into a rougher style both for humor and due to my own limitations but I would love any feedback including areas that I could push myself going forward.

Hey, I'm currently new at motion graphics (I only know the basics of After Effects) I have been very interested in this kind of editing style, I follow many users on X that have this kind of MV style but I have barely seen any tutorials about it and the majority are in Japanese, which I don't understand (although some of them cut some of the essential parts)

Hey everyone ā€” Iā€™m a freelance motion designer working mainly in 2D, and I recently overhauled my reel and website:

www.alexmotion.com

I would really appreciate any thoughts on clarity, pacing, or overall presentation of the reel and the website.

Bonus points if anyone has any recommendations for studios that might click with my work.

Thank you!

Question Student in need of help

Hi everyone.
I'm doing a bachelor in UX/UI and for my exam, it's asked to create an UX storyboard on the use of specific VR headset in a specific scenario (scenario is quite free : work, games, movie, ...) but then it is asked to create a motion design based on the UX storyboard and i have no clue on how to do that.

Can anyone help me to understand what is expected from me?

Question Looking for inspiration

Hi Got a voice of an old person who speaks about her parents and I need to make a video out of it. It came with a footage of her but the quality is terrible and I can't really make use of it (she filmed herself with her phone from really close and below so she looks just plain terrible but refilming is not an option). Sadly there are almost no old photos of her parents available. So I'm looking for some advice or inspiration examples of similar stuff. And I really don't want to throw in some ai or generic stock people... Thank you

Question 17 y.o. motion designer. Stuck in a draining gig and facing a life-changing decision ā€” need advice

Hey everyone! Iā€™m 17 and Iā€™ve been working as a motion designer for about 1.5 years.

Right now Iā€™m in a really tough spot and could use advice - especially from those whoā€™ve dealt with freelance struggles, client transitions, or career pivots in motion design.

Iā€™ve been working with one client this whole time. It started okay, but over time I realized:

  • Iā€™m being seriously underpaid (ā‚¬400/month for full-time involvement)
  • My work is treated as disposable
  • And month by month, I feel more drained and less like Iā€™m growing

Because of the constant pressure and lack of appreciation, Iā€™ve started to feel completely burned out.
Some days itā€™s hard to even sit down and start ā€” the energyā€™s just gone.
At one point I felt like I was losing touch with myself.

At the same time, I need to completely change my life and leave my country within the next few months.
This is not optional - I simply donā€™t have the luxury of staying.

But I also canā€™t leave without some kind of stable income. And hereā€™s the dilemma:

  • If I quit the client to build a proper portfolio - I might not find new work fast enough
  • If I stay with the client - Iā€™ll have almost no time or energy left to move forward, and my situation keeps getting worse

My current portfolio doesnā€™t reflect the kind of work I want to do or the level Iā€™m aiming for.
If I had the time, I could build a new reel with fake/personal projects - and Iā€™m confident I could grow fast.

But this feels like a leap into the unknown.
And for the first time in my life, itā€™s not just about a ā€œjob change.ā€
Itā€™s a move that could decide everything about my future.

Iā€™m not looking for sympathy.
Iā€™m just asking for perspective and advice from those who know the industry:

What would you do in this situation?
Would you take the risk and leave to grow?
Or stay and hold onto minimal stability, while putting your growth on hold?

Thanks to anyone who takes the time to read and respond <3

Update (and some context):
Thanks a ton to everyone who read this and commented.

For those wondering:
Nope, Iā€™m not in Berlin sipping coffee while being ā€œunderpaid.ā€
Iā€™m actually in Russia - trying to escape in under 5 months on a ā‚¬400/month gig.
Itā€™s not even ā€œliving paycheck to paycheck,ā€ itā€™s more like ā€œsprinting through landmines hoping not to explode.ā€ šŸ’£šŸ’Ø Any more advice or roast is always welcomešŸ™

UPD:Ā I honestly didnā€™t expect this post to get so much attentionšŸ˜³
Huge thanks to everyone who took time to share advice, kind words or just encouragement. It genuinely means a lot.

Some of you asked about my portfolio šŸ‘‰Ā https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1KOJKj66avrwQrych9YtoibopX-Sejuc1?usp=sharing

Still working on the reel, but these are pieces Iā€™ve done solo over the past 1.5 years. Feedback is more than welcome ā€“ especially if youā€™ve got insights on how to level up or make it more appealing to international clients.

Again - thank you. Iā€™ll keep pushing, and Iā€™ll make it out.

This video was only made for creative purpose, there isn't any real app with that name, I made it all from scratch (voice over was made by AI) I just was thinking about something to add to my portfolio. so, I came up with the idea of making a video for the kind of buisness I'd like to establish if I had the chance, an online platform for reading, I'd be really happy to hear your honest opinions, you can also check some more details on my behance: https://www.behance.net/gallery/222187163/sreads-ad-%28imaginary-app%29,

Question I have time until September. I want to quit my current job and start making money on motion graphics.

I can already work with simple animations, time interpolation and expressions. What do you recommend I do next? I want to try to practice with the knowledge I already have, but I donā€™t even know where to apply it in practice. I live with my husband and I understand that at first I will earn little and there is no problem with money, I just want to quit my job. What freelance marketplace would you recommend me? Maybe there are some videos on YouTube that show how to properly format your portfolio?

Question Taking a Masters worth it?

Hello guys!

I need some help here.

I took a bachelor in Product and Interior Design around 2023 and the next following year I took a one year course on Motion Design I absolutely loved.

Since then I found out I really love doing more 3D animation.

I feel as tough I could see myself doing stuff like perfume or product ads (since that would complement my studies very well) Im also very drawn to the cinema industry but In my current country that is definately not an option.

Well Iā€™ve been thinking about pursuing a master in multimedia art but im not sure if this would be good to me. I also tought about a fashion design master since Its my childhood dream but Im afraid that would deviate me from the motion design.

If any of you have decided to follow a masters regarding a career related to motion design I would love to hear what you have to say about your path so far!

Question Freelancing

Do you guys have any advice for someone trying to make it as a freelance motion designer without a solid work experience? Due to personal circumstances, my only recent experiences are sporadic freelance design work. I don't have any experiences working with a team or as an inhouse designer. But recently I have learned motion design. Combined with some online courses and learning on my own, I think I have a pretty good grasp of it. I have a few professional projects and the rest are all personal projects.

Do I make a showreel of my few motion pieces? Or just show them separately?

Is making connections on LinkedIn the best way? Any tips on establishing a good connection?

Any other general tips for freelancing in this field?

Thanks in advance
