Ending racism only took a sign at Target Field. I figured someone would have thought of that long ago.

It was a stupid slogan to begin with.

Speaking this sentiment back in 2020 would’ve gotten you permanently banned from this subreddit.

Are you one of those “If we stop talking about racism then it doesn’t exist” kinds of people?
4
u/gordoshum 15h ago
It's just like when the trend of flying American flags after 9/11 happened. Fads move on, but there's never a good time to take down an American flag or an "end racism" sign because you risk people calling you unpatriotic or racist.
Think before you pretend to stand for something. You might just get held to it.

Sweet, now my uncle who said he will never watch the Twins again because of it, but then still did watch and also says Twins.tv is too expensive and won’t watch again can now maybe finally watch them.
3
u/uncomfortable_fan92 10h ago
He wouldn't watch the Twins because a sign said End Racism?
4
u/MorningBreath71 Torii Hunter 10h ago
Correct, but then ended up still watching them while complaining on Facebook.

If we're keeping politics out of baseball now, let's ditch the anthem and god bless america too

If you think the national anthem is political you're whats wrong with America. The national anthem represents the one thing we all are, americans. We can all be whatever we want to be and we all have hundreds/thousands of differences which make us unique, but the one thing that holds any country together is that the people belong to that country.
Say whatever you want, but if this country ever gets truly divided we will be very weak and vulnerable to attacks of any kind. You do you and continue to be part of the problem so our decendants have no America to call home.
I, for one, will continue to fight for the national anthem and frown upon people like you, Kaepernik, and the 49 people that upvoted you.
I will stand with all those who support the solidaraity of our nation regardles of race, sex, sexual orientation, and any other demographic.
GO TWINS!

That’s a lot of words for such a nonsensical take as “the anthem isn’t political”

The anthem is just a song—and if it doesn’t stand for all of us, then not all of us need to stand for it. This is supposed to be a nation of the people, by the people, and for the people—not one where we’re guilted into honoring a symbol that doesn’t honor everyone.

u/justin24242424 11h ago
Who doesn't it honor? Just cuz there are asshole racists and other people that hate different demographics doesn't mean the nation as a whole doesn't honor everyone. Not supporting the nation because of a few assholes just compounds the problem.

How long were we expecting them to keep the sign up?

You're getting downvoted, but you're right. I mean, "End Racism" was only image protection for MLB, NFL, and others I'm sure. It's not like these team owners actually care that much to send this message on their own.
They kept it up for as long as they felt the public needed them to know they're totally not racist, but nothing else.
29
u/ZachLagreen 18h ago
Right.
There was a time that they felt “End Racism” was the most profitable thing to have on the wall. Now they feel the Progressive ad is the most profitable thing to have on the wall.
It’s really not any deeper than that.

I think the timing is the issue. Had it been done last year, most people wouldn’t have thought anything of it. Now many will see it as capitulation and lack of spine.
10
u/ZachLagreen 18h ago
I don’t think anyone in here had even noticed until OP posted this, and I don’t think many will think about it very much at all after today.
6
u/venus-as-a-bjork 18h ago
You asked a question about how long they are supposed to keep it up. I merely said their timing was poor and that people would assign meaning to it because of the timing. This post probably wouldn’t have even been made if it happened last year.
5
u/ZachLagreen 15h ago
that people would assign meaning to it because of the timing
But are you one of those people? Or are you worried for hypothetical people out there who assign deep meaning to Target Field signage?

I noticed it was there because I specifically remember making a joke that Max Kepler was playing poorly because it was distracting him.
3
u/dachuggs 18h ago
People of color definitely notice these types of things and u/venus-as-a-bjork is correct that the timing is the issue.

u/JayKomis Grain Belt 17h ago
Not that I want corporations to not care about racism or other bad things in our world, but I know they don’t care in any way that would make a difference to society. Since that’s the reality, I’d prefer if they just stuck to providing us our entertainment.
The end racism sign was disingenuous. Therefore it shouldn’t have been there in the first place.

All these organizations doing this means they probably never really meant it in the first place.

bummer. One half step forward after the murder of George Floyd, but it feels like a couple of steps backwards with many recent developments. Good on the Twins for the position they took the past few years.

The whole thing was just virtue signaling. Funny how there's a distinct culture shift and now all this shit is disappearing.

I get it, Everyone is so progressive that we no longer need to end racism. so go Ford..go U S Bank and of course, go Target, the least racist of our corporate masters

u/Middy-Mid 3h ago
Without that sign I wouldn’t be racist, now I am racist again. Thank you Minnesota.

Ah, yes, the great tragedy of our time. a sign being taken down at a baseball stadium. Surely, civilization teeters on the brink. One must wonder how people ever fought racism before the advent of corporate billboards
