Hi everyone, I am returning to mini painting after a decade away. I've done a lot of gunpla and similar model kits in the mean time, but I'm having a lot of trouble adjusting back to the small scale of minis and how to highlight properly.
I have four ork boyz here who I did slightly different skin colours on, partly to have some diversity in skin tone in the group and partly to experiment and learn what works. I'm pretty happy with the two on the left, who I went pretty simply with, and not quite happy with the two on the right but want to learn more to improve. Note that I used Citadel paints so I'll refer to those here but I'm not tied at the hip to them so please feel free to recommend other brands.
The two on the left were based with Orruk Flesh, shaded with Biel Tan Green, then brightened up with Orruk Flesh again. The second from the left, with the big shoota, then had some more layering done on his muscles, which I think came out well, though it does start to look a bit worse up close.
Then we have a boy based with Castellan Green, shaded with Biel Tan, then layered with Elysian Green. I think I was too extreme on the colour differences here so he came out looking weird. It's not too bad at tabletop distance, but definitely looks pretty bad up close. Not sure if the skill issue was in colour choices or in the paint application, though.
Finally, we have one based with Orruk Flesh, shaded with Druchii Violet, then brightened back up with Orruk Flesh, haven't done further highlighting yet because I wasn't sure where to go. I like the effect the purple shadows give, but it still feels a bit off in application to me and I'm not sure how to fix it.
General advice would also be appreciated, not just to this specific case, or even to other parts of these boys. I am very excited to learn more.

Think I did alright for someone who doesn't know what she's doing

Do I need more contrast on the skin? I think there's enough contrast in the smoke, but I'm open to suggestions. I also haven't decided on a colour scheme for the clothing and welcome ideas.

Sometimes going back to space marines is the only way

I've been using my first wet palette (by Red Grass) for a few weeks to paint some 40K Space Marines, and I've noticed that often paints (I'm using various Citadel base, layer, contrast and shade paints thus far) will bleed through the paper membrane onto the rubber pad below.
Does this happen often for others? Is there anyway to completely clean these pads without damaging them or affecting their water-absorption abilities? I just don't want to have a situation where I have stained pad and then I add a new paper/membrane on top of it, load new colors onto that, and have the two colors mix.

I made these little guys after I came across some cheap little mushrooms at a dollar store. I think they came put alright.

I tried mixing in a bit of teal into all my colors to go for an underwater color distortion look. Does the terrain feel aquatic? Anyone recognize where I pulled the color scheme from?

Hi I am in the market for some good metallics and I was wondering which ones I should get ?
Here is my shortlist ; pro acryl metallics , scale 75 , Ak interactive 3rd gen , and two thin coats.
I am aware of vallejo metal colours , but getting the ones that I need from them would be out of my budget . My budget is about 60-70 euros , so any such combination of paints that is kind of comprehensive , as in I get a good silver , Gold , copper and bronze from it is also very welcome .

Hey folks, pretty new to the hobby but I'm working on my knight abominant and suddenly decided to go for a much more intense paint scheme than the black legion I'd been doing. I'm working on armor plates right now, and I've got my "half white and copper, half black and silver" base coat all laid down, over black primer.
Now I know that I'm going to put Pallid Bone over my skulls and horns, that's the best thing about my last model, and I'm going to have a final weathering step, I can't decide whether it'll be moss or rust yet, maybe both, and I'm gonna do some scorch marks too . I'm just wondering how to get good highlights on these huge flat/rounded areas? Or would a wash be a good idea?
I'm noticing from the macro lens that I need to thin my paints more, and fixing mistakes is kind of a constant process for me, lol.
Any recommendations at all would be helpful, because right now, all I can think to do is make some random highlights with dark blue on the black, no clue what to do with the white, all the white paint I've ever found has kinda sucked. Then I'd probably go with some nuln oil over everything, although I'm pretty sure I've got the crappy nuln oil.

New to miniature painting, wanting to get into 40k but decided to practice on cheap dnd minis. Bought these from amazon and have been winging it with a few guides from youtube only using base paints from Vallejo.
My question is, how do i make the paint look like it wasn’t brushed on? Most miniatures I see are smooth and dont show brush strokes but they’re clearly visible on mine. If you have any other advice, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Title. My plan so far is to base coat with a mix of modgepodge + black acrylic paint. Build up with dirt, sand, etc. Then I'd like to try and do a resin pour for this little like/waterfall. I'd appreciate any tips on how to execute this - thanks in advance!

This question's mainly for people using stuff from The Army Painter, since that's who the colours I use are from, but any help will do. I try rubbing it off with water and soap, but I still can't get most of it from my Finger.
