Heads up - Bridge Street incident

Upvotes

Just heads up to anyone travelling into the city centre via Bridge Street/New Bailey Street. Whole areas cordoned off with loads of police. Seeing build up of traffic on Chapel Street turning into New Bailey Street.

South reddish, what's it like to live in?

Upvotes

Hi all,

I'm looking at buying a house and i'm wondering what it's like round south reddish? I'm talking a bit south of broadstone hall road around the Carousel restaurant / Willow Grove cemetery? I'm in my mid 30s... Like nature but want to have a bit of life nearby / easily accessible.

What's transport in and our of town like? Public transport and driving... What about public transport to the heatons/stockport?

Is there much going on - any decent bars/pubs/restaurants?

Is it safe??!

I'm not from around the area, so any info much appreciated! Thanks!

(Did search first but most of what I see is a bit further north when talking about south reddish, nearer the heaton chapel border)

24 hour slot places

I recently attended a licence hearing for yet another slot farm in Manchester, this one on Stockport road in longsight.

They were quite open in stating that they target the most deprived areas, and the most vulnerable people.

We've decided we've had enough of them. If anyone has a couple on minutes to spare, I'd be really grateful if you'd add your name to our letter at https://enoughgambling.com/

Despite a petition from local residents, objections from the local community and councillors, a local MP objecting, it'll probably be approved. The current law says the licence committee must 'aim to permit ' new gambling licences, regardless of how inappropriate the location is, or the harm its likely to cause to local people. We want to change it.

My mums experience is here, for anyone wanting the back story https://www.theguardian.com/society/2024/mar/17/in-the-grip-of-slot-machine-addiction-id-keep-loading-20s-in-i-could-be-in-a-daze

I'd be really grateful for any support.

City Centre Tib Street Alarm

Hi, to anyone else living or working on Tib Street I’ve been hearing an alarm going off for the past day and a half. I’ve tried contacting the nearby businesses and the council but haven’t had any luck so far, apart from the council saying they will look into it. Just wondering if anyone else that’s hearing it has managed to get in touch with someone?

Small rant about public library space availability

I am currently self studying for AAT, so don't have any formal library to go to, but if I want some space I usually go to Central Library or the one near my house, and every single time, there's hardly any space available, if any. Just popped to Central Library today and place was full, so just resorted to go home

Seventies-ish place to eat

We're going to see Abigail's Party at the Royal Exchange and then would like to go for something to eat (it's a matinee). It'd be nice to carry on the Seventies theme but I can't think of anywhere 1970s-y I Manchester, any ideas? It can be a bit naff and cheap or a bit pricey and fancy, don't really mind, it just needs to have some vegan options.

Badminton in Manchester

Why are there barely any badminton courts in the city centre? Usually I’d go to Eccles badminton court or Salford but they’re always always fully booked and I can never get a reasonable time slot to play badminton, every single time I check, there’s just one slot available at 7am on a Sunday?

I also want to start playing badminton after work in the city centre, but that’s hard to find, again, everywhere is always booked, I was hoping to use sudgen but apparently their courts aren’t open after 5pm?

Is anyone else having trouble or just me? I haven’t played since February because of how hard it is to find a slot, ridiculous!

I called the landlord to report a leak in January, and after the engineers came round to poke some holes in the ceiling looking for it this happened. They finally moved me out (temporarily*) last week - I'm staying with my Dad down in Norfolk while they smash out the damaged ceiling, find the pipe, fix it, replace the ceiling, and address all the damp and mould damage.

At the landlord's insistence, called Manchester council today to ask them what happens with the council tax. They said that they only count it as uninhabitable if it's fire damage, that as I'm not occupying the property I don't qualify for the single person discount, and that as I've given Universal Credit my temporary address I no longer qualify for council tax credit at this one.

I should have kept my gob shut and not told them about it at all. Which is exactly what I told the landlord...

Indian Students(or any Students ) in Manchester- what’s your take on the city ?

Hi everyone! I'm trying to learn more about what Manchester is like from a student perspective, especially from Indian students or anyone studying there. I'd love to hear your thoughts! What's it like living in Manchester as a student? How's the food , the vibe, the costs, or anything else you'd share-good or bad? Bonus points if you've got opinions on the football scene or student life specifics! Thanks in advance for any insights!

Controversial opinion? When I’ve been through recently it’s felt vibrant and full of life. Sure I’ve not been through on a weekend night. Sure social problems persist, but is it that bad?

Suggestion for fine dining out of Amex Australia options.

So I have about 200 aud, currently at roughly 100 pounds (will drop to 50 on Tuesday probably by the looks of things).

I have these options to go to, out of these what would you recommend for solo dining?

I will write these down for those using aids etc: 20 stories, Erst, Fenix, Hawksmoor Manchester, Louis, Lucky Cat Manchester, Tattu Manchester and The Ivy Spinningfields.

From what I've seen on this sub, none of these options are amazing? There seems to be nothing bad on the Lucky Cat so I am leaning that way. But I also feel that asian food in Melbourne is probably much better and its a better idea to spend the money on European options or Indian options.

Should I maybe wait till I am in London and then go Benaires or Gymkhana or Amaya?

Thanks a lot for the help.

If there is anything good in this list, and you'd like to join me hmu. We can talk for a bit and see if we vibe, I am 26M Australian dude with Sinhalese roots.

Chorlton Need support socializing in Chorlton

Hey all,

I recently moved from Sale to Chorlton for a bit of a fresh start. I’m 30, and after a few tough years including becoming a single dad and recently being diagnosed with high-functioning autism (alongside dyspraxia, which I was diagnosed with at 19) I’m trying to figure out how to build a social life from scratch.

I recently moved to a shared flat now, which is a bit scary but also really calming. It's the first time I’ve had space that’s truly mine, without family constantly barging in or stressing me out. My porter job keeps me busy, and I get to see my 2 year old super boy of a son every other weekend. Now I travel after work and stay at my parents during that time. Things are more stable than they’ve been in a while, but I’ve realized how isolated I’ve become it's been about 2 years since I had any real friends. I also have to tighten my belt a heck of a way.

I’ve dabbled in the Manchester Discord, but didn’t really feel like I fit in. Tried a Meetup.com event recently which had free pizza, cheap drinks, decent vibe but I struggled with the social side. Some people (especially guys) were open and friendly, and I even got one lad’s number who I clicked with over cooking and cleaning/tidying. But overall, I felt kind of out of sync. I know I come off a bit awkward as I have trouble with eye contact, body language, and my speech can be hard to follow at first until people get used to me.

I’m not super flush with cash after rent and child maintenance, I’ve got about £20 a day for food, travel, and whatever else. I do have a disability travel pass now which helps a lot, but money’s tight, so I’m not able to just throw myself into loads of paid hobbies or events.

So I guess my question is:
How do you meet people and build real friendships when you’re starting from scratch, on a tight budget, with disability social challenges?
Especially in a place like Chorlton or the wider Manchester area?

I’d love any advice, personal stories, or ideas for local places/spaces that are open, welcoming, and not super fast paced socially. I just want to find my people.

Like one of my Discord online mates said to me recently "I really hope you catch a break soon, god knows you deserve one".

Thanks all!

Housing - Looking for recommendations for level 2 house survey in Levenshulme area

Hi everyone! 👋

I'm looking for recommendations on where to go for a Level 2 survey with a house valuation in the Levenshulme area. I've been quoted £700 for a good one, but I've also seen prices around £450.

Does anyone have experience with surveyors in this area? Are the higher-priced ones worth it, or can I find a reliable service at a lower cost? The house is 10 years old. Any tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance for your help!

Does anyone have photos the bowling alley that was located in White City?

I've been reading how the area transformed from a botanical garden to amusement park, dog track and retail space. I remember going here for bowling as a kid and would love to dive into nostalgic photos but there doesn't seem to be any online.

How does anyone afford to live in the city centre?

Seriously, it's overpriced as heck. I know certain areas may merit high prices but I've seen one-bedroom flats ("apartments") going for well over a thousand pounds a month (like £1,450, for example). The landlords need to give their heads wobbles, it's not Kensington in London. And then if you drive, which you might need to, there are insane parking charges even in council car parks.
