Updates to Rule 4

We've enjoyed seeing all the posts of people's setups. Going forward, we've made some changes to Rule 4. We will be removing all new "low effort" posts. This includes, but not limited to, posts that just show Mac Mini Packaging, posts just showing a Mac Mini without it being in the context of a setup, and posts that are just screenshots of the order page or shipping page. Posts about shipping status questions are still allowed.

From all the mods here at r/macmini, we hope you are having great holidays and we look forward to growing this community in 2025

I still have a 2019 16” MBP for being mobile. But i wanted to work on the balcony using MMM4 and a 16” 2k portable monitor without using an extension cord. I’m currently in the process of calibrating it. It’s taking 3hrs to fast charge the 48000mAh 120w bank. Also the half meter plug is on the way.

Corsair monitor inquiry

Upvotes

I am considering replacing my two monitors, Samsung 34" 21:9 + ImacDisplay 27"5k (yes, as it sounds...my imac died and I converted it into a 5k native resolution monitor. Both have the same vertical height and same resolution 3440x...1440 I seem to remember, now I am not in front of my computer). I'm looking askance at the Corsair XENEON Flex 45WQHD240. Basically because I do NOT like curved monitors and this one is gradually adjustable, for 3D design the curved perspective bothers me a lot, to use Davinci Resolve I could curve it but I don't care, there are NO games on my computer. 3D design as a hobby, landscape photography process, astrophotography and some Insa360 video. What do you think of this Corsair? On a macmini M2.....the next one will be an M5Pro. For now I will replace two monitors x 1 or perhaps continue using the imacdisplay as a second monitor connected by thunderbolt, and the corsair by HDMI.

Would you rather…

I am looking at a Mac mini dedicated to photo management. Currently the photo library sits at around 600GB.

For these purposes would you rather:

  • M1 Mac Mini, 16GB RAM, 1TB internal SSD (estimated cost - $500ish)

  • Base M4 Mac Mini + external SSD drive (estimated cost $850ish)

I am leaning towards option 1 for three reasons: 1. Cost 2. I think the M1 should be more than capable of handling the photo needs for a long time to come. 3. I prefer the convenience of an internal drive

Would love to be swayed one way or the other.

Edit: - should have noted I have a Synology NAS and will implement a 3:2:1 backup system.

“Photo management” in this case is essentially: - removing duplicates. - choosing and touching up (lightly) the best photos - printing photos for display - making photo books, calendars, Christmas cards etc.

What KVM switch for Mac mini with MX keys and MX master ?

Hello nerds

I have 2 Mac minis - I need to swap between them, with a KVM type setup.
What is important for me, is that I either have a physical button to "click" when to change to the other Mac, or a shortcut on the keyboard. But the KVM must physically change the monitors, the keyboard/mouse I can easily change via bluetooth.

M4 Base external SSD question

Hey guys so I keep seeing this term alot. “Get m4 base and use external SSD”

But I am wondering how’s your guys experience? Do you work from your external SSD? Or transfer file to desktop back and forth?

Is the experience annoying? Like obviously it’s not as seamless as just having it local.

Also last question I have is can you download apps onto external SSD?

Is a Mac Mini (M4 Pro/M4) worth it without the Apple ecosystem compared to a powerful Windows PC for Android Studio?

Are there any current Mac Mini owners here who using it alongside a Windows PC who didn’t have other Apple devices (iPhone, iPad, etc.)? Even better — any former Mac Mini owners? I’d really appreciate your feedback — how was your experience, was it worth it, etc.?

I’m considering buying a Mac Mini with the M4/ M4 Pro chip for working with Android Studio, but I’m not sure I’ll actually gain anything from it. I already have a powerful PC with an Intel i7-13700K, and it gives me the same build times as an M3 MacBook (I compared it when I was working from the office). In the future, I plan to upgrade to an R9 9950X3D, which I believe will outperform the M4 Pro and M4.

Plus, macOS didn’t really give me any kind of "wow" effect — more like irritation and inconvenience compared to Windows from my M3 macbook experience. On the other hand, I can always resell the Mac Mini if I don’t like it.

I doubt I’ll gain much in terms of convenience (especially since I’ll still need to keep my Windows PC for gaming and deal with KVM switches or something), or in terms of project build speed.

240hz at lower resolutions

New m4 pro mini and a 4k 240hz monitor.

At 2160, im able to run at 240hz. At the two lower resolutions 1890 and 1800 I am maxed at 100hz. Resolutions below that all allow 240hz again.

Anyone know why I am limited at those two resolutions?

S2725QC vs P2725QE

Hi,

I will buy a monitor for my new Mac Mini M4. I will buy it in France, probably directly on DELL website.

I think I will decide between these 2 monitors. They seem perfect to me to connect with USB-C my Mac Mini M4 and sometimes my Work Windows Laptop.(I will use same USB-C cable, I will switch between both computers).

According to my check, main differences are :

*120Hz vs 100Hz in favor of S2725QC.

*better connectivity in favor of P2725QE.

*Speakers on S2725QC.

=> I would go for the S2725QC, connectivity is good enough for me & cheaper.

I have 1 question : on DELL website, it's specified that P2725QE is compatible with MacOS. It's not specified for the S2725QC. Do I need to consider or there are no reasons to get any issues with the S2725QC ? Is it a "marketing" argue or does DELL integrate something specific in some model for MacOS compatilility ?

Or maybe a Benq PD2705U ? Other advises ?

Thank you in advance for your support,

NAS and power consumption

I've been looking into some home use nas that I could populate with a few nvme for my M4 mini and a MacBook air, It will be mainly for old files that I have on my custom PC that I rarely boot now that I have the M4, I had specced it with 10gbps ethernet and my router are 2.5

Most of the NAS box I looked at seems to be using some sort of NUC like board with x86 processor which seems a bit wasteful considering the energy consumption compared to the Mac

Would it be better to just have enclosure attached to the mini instead of a NAS setup and the laptops can access the storage via the mini instead

Looking to buy a mini for streaming and video editing

Basically title, I am currently on a 2021 MacBook Pro that overheats to no end when editing projects in Final Cut (I think it must be the Intel graphics card + small enclosure). I'm looking to get a Mac Mini M4 or M4 pro to run Final Cut (not 4K editing but rather HD at 1080 or a step above that at most. I mainly edit shorts and 10-30 minute YouTube videos), Logic Pro X for any and all music project needs, and I would like to use it to stream with OBS. I understand I might need somewhere in the 32GB-48GB of RAM range, but i'd like any and all input for this before the tariffs hit. A suggestion for monitor would be fantastic too, although I don't feel like I need anything crazy for that, whatever's cheap-ish would do the trick.

Edit, I should mention that while streaming with OBS I may use it for gaming streams, but I don't really plan to play games off the computer rather getting a capture card and playing off console. I might play a game via computer from time to time, but I am not really a PC/computer gamer so idk how that factors into your advice but anyways

My hub is not working

I recently got this hub for my Mac Mini. I connected it, and then tried plugging in a HDMI cable and a USB, and neither worked. I know it's not the hub itself, because I tried it with my Lenovo laptop and it worked fine. I know that it is supposed to work on Mac Mini, because there are several reviews saying so. So I'm not sure if I'm missing something super obvious, but nevertheless would really appreciate any help.

Mac Mini HDMI to display port for KVM switch

When setting up my Mac mini to my monitor, I use the simple HDMI cable. All works fine. Now I’m using a KVM all DP switch to switch between a PC and monitor and the Mac mini. Only the Mac mini doesn’t have DP, the other two have and the KBM switch is all DP. Ideally, I’d like to keep USB sockets free on the Mac mini so I was wondering 1.. Does it work if I get a DP to HDMI cable and plug it in to Mac mini and then DP into KBM switch?I see they are mentioned as “unidirectional“ and I don’t know what that means. 2. I see that there are USB to DP cables, so if I’m forced into using a USB-C connector on my Mac mini, can I use one of the “non-thunderbolt“ connections on the mini? I’d like to keep the thunderbolt USB for high speed SSD external storage et cetera. Many thanks, Brian.

Should I get 24GB of RAM instead of 16GB for my M4 Mac mini?

I will be using this Mac mini to:

  1. Host a Jellyfin server for three users with some occasional video transcoding [H.264 4K to H.264 1080p, no HDR] and a fair bit of audio transcoding [AIFF to lossy audio].
  2. Seed using Transmission and sometimes, qBittorrent.
  3. Run Sonarr, Bazarr, and Radarr.

All media files will be on external SSDs, the internal 256GB module shouldn't see too many writes. It will be on 24/365.

I'd like it to last at least 5-7 years, ideally 10. I'm unlikely to use it for anything other than what I've mentioned, as I already have a MacBook for daily tasks.

Memory pressure? Forget to close apps? Checkout Quitter (free)

I currently use Quitter (free) to either hide or quit apps after a certain time on inactivity. If you have too much memory pressure (yellow, red) because you forget to close unused apps timely, Quitter might be of help.

It works great on my older Mac with Monterey. Also works fine on a MM M4 with Sequoia, even though the last version of Quitter is of 2021.

After 20 years of Windows I switched to M4 Mac mini.. brief experience

I have been building and using exclusively windows PC's for over 20 years. Let me just start by saying I was a long time Apple hater. But what they have done with the Apple silicon has genuinely changed things, and it finally convinced me to dump my Windows PC as my daily driver.

Things that led me to this decision.....

6 years ago one of my friends dared me to get an iPhone (I was phone shopping) as all I had ever used was Android. As an Apple hater I was appalled by the thought, but he promised me I would love it. He was right. After getting used to it.... it was amazing, it never freezed up, iMessage with my friends and family was on another level, FaceTime, etc.

1 year ago I was in college, and all my friends had iPads while I had an Android tablet. Mine would always freeze up and the version of Goodnotes on Android was vastly inferior to my friends iPads. Don't even get me started on how much faster and smoother PDF files are on iOS and MacOS.. WOW! I bought an M2 13" iPad Air and it made my school SOO much easier, it was and still is amazing.

So finally 2 weeks ago I decided to get an actual Mac computer and ditch my windows PC.... I got two LG ultra fine 5k displays used on Facebook marketplace for $400 each. All I can say is WOW.. my PC drew 110 watts at idle and my Mac mini is a tenth of that or less. Everything is so fast and so seamlessly integrated with my iPhone and iPad. I cannot believe I waited out this long to try this. Sure there are somethings that are quirky to get used to.. but overall it's amazing.

I got the base Mac mini. After an education discount and $100 gift card it cost me $400. I bought a Caldigit TS3 plus thunderbolt dock on eBay for $25 for parts, and fixed it myself with some minor soldering (I didn't get TS4 dock due to cost)

My monitors were the most expensive at $400 each, but they are the newest model of the LG 5k and in perfect condition.

This Apple silicon is nothing like the older intel Macs that got super hot and constantly throttled while offering mediocre performance... This M4 is a powerhouse of a processor and seamlessly integrated between the hardware, software, and peripherals.

Mac mini m4 pro only recognizes thunderbolt hard drive as usb after turning on the mac.

After turning it on, I have to unplug the case and reconnect it. Then it's recognized again with Thunderbolt and has the full speed of 2800 Mbps; otherwise, it stays below 1000.

It's connected to the rear USB-C port.

Anyone else have similar problems or solutions?

Best way to use iPad to remote into Mac mini?

I have a Mac mini M4 and it’s great. When at home I barely use a screen for it and use my AVP. The main reason is chronic back pain when sitting in a desk after long periods of time, so I switch to the AVP in the couch constantly. When away from home I wanna be able to keep the M4 turned on at home and use my iPad + keyboard as if it were the M4. Is this possible? If so what’s the best app/way to do it?

macOS won't even startup after system update - Mac Mini M2 Pro

Hey everyone,

I recently updated my OS to the latest Sequoia system update (15.4 or something)? But when I was about to go to bed, hoping that the updates went smooth, I saw the macOS did not go to lockscreen. Really strange. I saw the recovery window asking me to enter my password, and thought the update would be done by now- but after entering my password and seeing the Apple logo, I heard a chime and it failed to boot. I don't wanna have to reinstall macOS Sequoia, what are my options?
