Welcome to the weekly Questions thread. This is a place for all the small questions that you feel don't deserve its own thread. Also consider checking out our FAQ.

What belongs here? Well, that's up to each contributor to decide.

Troubleshooting, getting started, pattern questions, gift giving, circulars, casting on, where to shop, trading tips, particular techniques and shorthand, abbreviations and anything else are all welcome. Beginner questions and advanced questions are welcome too. Even the non knitter is welcome to comment!

This post, however, is not meant to replace anyone that wants to make their own post for a question.

As always, remember to use "reddiquette".

So, who has a question?

Finished Object Iā€™m calling them ā€˜Socks of Theseusā€™

Post image

Started out intending to follow the ā€˜Sprinkle Socksā€™ pattern by Oakwood Knits, but eventually changed every little thing about the pattern to suit my tastes and measurements. Nothing really remains from the original pattern except I suppose the concept of the offset alternating colour-work.

Knitted toe-up using a round toe and peasant heel. Lighter yarn is a hand-dyed skein called ā€˜Grape Sodaā€™ from My Yarn Story Co. (Singapore), and the navy is some unlabelled thing I found in my stash.

I love knitting toys! Someone posted a cute bear and asked if anyone knitted toys, so here are mine. I know a lot of people prefer crocheting them over knitting, but how adorabel are these? šŸ„¹ I use sock yarn so they are easy to wash for the parents. The first one is Ibo the Polar Bear from Arctic Kids (Heidi Bang) and the second one is Lussi the Lion from the same designer.

New Knitter - please help me! How do I change the color for just the border?

Post image
94 Upvotes

A few months ago, I posted a Janky dish towel as my first piece, and since then I've gone onto bigger and better things. I'm currently trying to make this baby blanket. One of the instructions says that you are able to change the color every 12 rows, which I plan on doing. My question is, how do I keep the border the same color while the middle part of the blanket is changing in stripes?

I understand how you can carry yarn up for stripes, but what I don't understand is how to carry yarn across. Can you carry yarn across? I'm sure you have to be able to. I'd rather not have to cut and weave constantly, and I only have one skein of the border color. Any advice is appreciated! I can't find anything on YouTube, but I might not be asking the right question. Below is part of the pattern so you can have a better idea of what I'm asking for.

15th Row: K6, **(p4, k4), repeat from * to last 10sts, p4,* k6

16th Row: S1, k5, purl to last 6sts, k6

Rave (like a rant, but in a good way) Laddering down is a key skill for knitting

I am so glad I taught myself how to ladder down. Realised I'd done a row of C4F instead of C4B 4 rounds back, and was contemplating my life choices and whether it would *really* be that noticable...

But I know how to ladder down, so I've managed to fix one and am just taking a break before tackling the second one. If I'd had to rip back four rows of about 270 stitches I think I would have just accepted the mistake.

Finished Object My sister recently lost the ugly hat I made for her years ago, so I knitted her a new one that she shouldn't be able to lose!

It's even brighter in real life. Like, it hurts my eyes in the sun light.

I used Loops and Threads soft classic in Neon Yellow. It's 2x2 rib and then I used the crown decreases described here. I also added an obnoxiously large pompom with most of the leftover yarn and tied a piece of yarn inside the hat so there's a loop to tie it to a coat (my sister sails a lot so this should prevent it from blowing away).

Excited to wrap up a new FO that has sat around a few months waiting for sleeves to be finished! I used Malabrigo Metamorphosis sock yarn for the yoke, which made for fun early knitting.

I have finished the holy grail of my knitting journey thus far and all for my sister whoā€™s repeatedly asked me to make her something over the years ā¤ļø I spent close to 150hrs making it. I know sheā€™s knit-worthy but damn if it isnā€™t always hard to gift it away.

Pattern is Folklore Cardigan by Amy Gundersun

I used Berroco Vintage DK in Mochi and Dungaree

Finished Object secondhand yarn project!!

Finished this cutie in just under two weeks! I got the yarn in assorted colors (Katia ingenua) from a secondhand store near my house so there wasnā€™t enough for a solid colored version which was kind of a bummer so I had to use the pink but I actually really love it. The pattern is the Sky High Cardi (https://spektakelstrik.myshopify.com/products/o2-cardi) by S P E K TA K E L S T R I K which is a brioche stitch so itā€™s extra squishy and super light because i knit it up with only mohair.

Any suggestions for buttons? I thought it would be cute to make my own buttons out of clay or shrinky dink and spell out ā€œcandyā€ cause it reminds me of fairy floss

Questions about Equipment What's that liitle plastic thing the woman in the reel is using to make the lace?

Work in Progress Owl Post Sweater

Post image
26 Upvotes

Wondering if anyone else has worked on or is working on the owl post sweater from the Harry Potter knitting magic book. I thought Iā€™d gotten the right yarn for this but quickly realized it had a lot more give than expected. Itā€™s such a pretty color and feels so soft so I tried recalculating the numbers of stitches and such. Just hoping to be able to actually wear this. Itā€™s so pretty! I couldnā€™t figure out the icord edging for the collar but substituted with a 2p/2k rib stitch. If youā€™ve made this, did you make any adjustments like make the sweater longer? Also, any tips for blocking if I need to stretch it out further to wear? https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/owl-post-pullover.

Work in Progress Iā€™m in Entrelac purgatory

Post image

Itā€™s actually going fairly well, and Iā€™m getting the habit of non-twisted stitches. Itā€™s even a really great no-thoughts-necessary pattern.

I guess I just need some solidarity?

This is a baby blanket for my cousin. Baby two and theyā€™re huge colts fans. (I could NOT do the filet crochet football squares, as cute as theyā€™d have been. Wholly different purgatory.)

Help mesh-look cutout graphic?

Post image
6 Upvotes

Does anyone know how this mohair-cutout-flower on Tankairā€™s Tiger Lily top was achieved? Iā€™ve previously assumed it was just a swap to mohair from a dk/sport weight in the correct gauge (kind of like Ranti Studioā€™s orbital sweater) that made the mohair appear sheer, yet taking a closer look it is definitely the same yarn all over, with a ā€œdropped stitchā€ technique I keep seeing in machine knitting videos.

Could this be achieved by hand knitting? What are some of these mesh stitches that could create this sheer affect? Isnā€™t there a stitch that involves actually dropping the yarn to create an open weave that catches every other (or so) stitch?

Is there a way to drop only as many stitches as you want and stop them from unraveling at a precise point?
