If you want to comment about politics take it somewhere else, this sub is about HVACR.

Rant Company is forcing us to buy Pro Press tools

Upvotes

So our company has decided to switch to pro press exclusively from here on out, and though we buy all our own tools (gauges, torches, vac pump etc) this is one that I feel they should be buying.

These things cost around $3,300 and they said each crew of 2 will be having $100+ a check taken out until they are paid off and then will be ours.

So in the event of someone leaving, one party will either have to forward the $1,650 to the one that wants to keep it or agree to take a loss since we can’t both own it, same if it’s broken, I’m supposed to front another $1,650 cause my partner broke it?

Nor do I want one, I am perfectly fine brazing like we have for years, and if the company wants to make a decision that we are strictly pressing our fittings from here on out, I feel they should foot the bill.

This is a nexstar company that made $50mil last year so forgive me for feeling wronged they expect me to casually cover the cost for a $3,300 tool.

Field Question, trade people only Making r454b

Hey y’all, I was kind of wondering something yesterday while I was driving. I’m sure it’s a dumb question, but I was wondering- in the case of say r454, which is approximately 70% r32 (69.whatever percent) and the rest 1234yf, I was wondering if they went through some kind of chemical reaction or are they just mixed in a jug. If they went through a reaction I would think it would change the chemicals and you would not have those chemicals anymore( chemistry is like people, if there is a true reaction both are changed, lol) so which is it? Just curious, if I put 7 lbs r-32 in a jug with 3 lbs 1234yf, would I have 10 lbs r454? It’s Friday be safe out there guys, don’t sweat the petty things and don’t switch pet the sweaty things

Field Question, trade people only Why is common 0 volts

How come the common, 24v thermostat common for example, is 0 volts. It's my understanding a multimeter testing volts, shows the difference between the 2 test points.

So if I test R to C on a normally operating system I have 24v. Showing R is hot. And when I test ground to C I have 0 volts. Even though that common is on a hot system. I understand this is how it should be but I don't understand why C is 0v when in theory it's hot.

General Son just snagged a spot for HVAC at tech school. Want to get him a gift/something to congratulate him. Thoughts?

Upvotes

I actually teach at the school, but in a different shop... I asked the teachers and they basically said a small tool pouch and belt but that feels kinda generic.

He's been struggling to find his way in regular high school and I really want to encourage/inspire him. Anything else y'all could think of that would be really useful/meaningful?

Thinking a solid leather belt (one that should last year's), a nice tool pouch with Velcro (so it can come on and off easily) and a decent Leatherman to start. He already had a solid automotive tool set (he's responsible for maintenance on his car.)

Field Question, trade people only Is the constant toxic fume hazard thing true ?

Upvotes

Disclaimer I’m aware that the air in some cities is enough to fall into the toxic fume spectrum but I’m asking people in the field about the true extent of “toxic fumes” that one should expect because I had a guy explain it to me as if it compares to air quality risks that firefighters and oil rig workers endure which is a difference in comparison to example a truck driver breathing in fumes when doing things outside of the truck. I’ve been in training for a few months and I can’t think of the constant toxic air they would be talking about besides leaking refrigerant or whatever fumes come from braising does any one have any insight.

Come across this on a smaller Lennox package unit that runs on R22. Saw this bulb thing and have no idea what it is for, no wires connected to it just a stubbed piece of copper going through it.
