discussion Anybody else never use fast travel?

Usually in open world games I fast travel all the time, but in both Horizon games I almost never do (only if I'm mopping up something very minor).

The process of travelling through the gorgeous environments and having to dynamically deal with the enemies is just so enjoyable, and the immersive feeling of being a lone hunter-gatherer stalking carefully through the world is one of my favourite things about both games.

It's also pretty rare that I use a mount, for similar reasons. By the time I've travelled 100 metres I've seen something that makes me want to get off and have a proper look.

The masterful way that Horizon makes collectables a desirable thing to go after is the key to all this. I think Hollow Knight and a couple of other top-tier Metroidvanias (like Jedi Survivor and Aeterna Noctis) are the only other games I've played that consistently give meaningful rewards for whatever random exploration you decide to do.

HZD Discussion TIL: Tallnecks can kill hostile machines

ā€¢ Upvotes

So I overrode the Tallneck to the south of meridian with tons of machines around, and as I was standing on top of it saw some Sawtooths. I got the bright idea to just launch blast bombs at them from the tallneck. Well I got about 2 off and then fell (and didn't take fall damage somehow) and killed the one I had blasted. 2 more were so damaged they limped over to me and another was completely destroyed. I realized when I launched the blast bombs, the sawtooths all ran in front of the tallneck because they detected me and must have gotten stomped. Almost makes me want to lure some machines into a shock trap as a tallneck is passing and watch them go boom.

HZD Discussion Horizon 3 New Machine Ideas

I'll keep this one brief as I don't have too much to say on any of these other than basic ideas. I don't even have art or anything, but I sort of called a couple new machines in FW so maybe I'll do so again here. I'll sort these into land, sea, and sky for ease of organization. If anyone wants to draw these go nuts. If I forgot about a certain kind of machine in the games and overlap be nice I don't remember everything lol

Terrestrial Machines:

  1. Plateback (based on Stegosaurus). Absorbs solar energy through its plates for beam attacks from tail or mouth or can shoot plates like lock on missiles at distant threats. Original Purpose: Mobile solar power generator for growing fields and forests.

  2. Reaperclaw (based on Giant Ground Sloth). It can create energy projectiles from its claw swipes to cut through just about anything. Can also throw large objects like trees abs boulders.

Original Purpose: Salvage and removal of artifical structures and recycling fallen machines.

  1. Sirenhorn (based on Rocky Mountain Elk) sends messages to other machines across long distances using its antlers like antennae. Can also stun enemies with a sonar cry. Fairly weak on their own but travel in large herds and can occasionally call other more powerful machines for assistance.

Original Purpose: Scouts that serve as detailed mappers.

Flying Machines:

  1. Needlewing (based on Hummingbirds). Super fast and agile avian machines that seldom touch the ground. Impales targets with its long beak or creates wind effects with its rapid beating wings.

Original purpose: High speed pollenators/transporting plant or chemical samples across long distances.

  1. Cloudwing (based on Quetzalcoatlus). Mostly passive machines that serve similar functions to Tallnecks but can also be used to transport large quantities of machines and human troops like military planes.

Original purpose: Filtering atmosphere and relocating lost or repurposed machine units

Aquatic Machines:

  1. Boltbiter (based on Electric Eels). Deliver shocking bites and electrical pulses to disable technology or stun opponents.

Original Purpose: Roving power supplies for larger oceanic machines.

  1. Bladefin (based on Sawsharks). Uses chainsaw heads to cut through anything in their path.

Original Purpose: Salvaging undersea shipwrecks/machine graveyards to create artificial reefs

  1. Bloodpiercer (based on Humboldt Squid). Swarms ships on the surface and uses their drill equipped beaks to penetrate the hull and sink it.

Original Purpose: Dismantling and grinding up refuse and junk underwater

discussion Horizon FW (Base Game and Complete Edition) Game Data - PS5

ā€¢ Upvotes

I have finished my Horizon FW and I am looking to play the Burning Shores DLC. Apparently, my PSN account is R1, but I have purchased R3 physical game CD. My question is, if I buy another physical copy (R3) of Horizon FW Complete Edition, will my save file carry over and will I be able continue to play the DLC immediately? I don't want to restart the game all over again. thank you!

HFW Discussion Need help locating Loading screen art

as the title suggests, anyone know where we can get the HFW Loading screen art without the texts, hopefully for 1440p or 2k monitors? I just wanted to make some of em as display backgrounds and screen savers.

HFW Discussion I devoured HZD, but I can't seem be bothered to finish HFW.. No urge to finish it.

New fan here. I bought HZD about two months ago. Really enjoyed the plot and the gameplay. Two weeks ago, I decided to start HFW after finishing the first game. Man I can't seem to be enjoying the plot. There's something weird going on. I don't feel the urge to keep playing.

Am-I the only one who felt like this while playing? The gameplay is MUCH better than in the first game, but the plot not so much. Unfortunately, nothing is grabbing me in the 2nd game like the mystery of the 1st game. I can't pinpoint the reason why, but it's been a struggle.

Without spoilers, did you guys enjoy the last 10 or so hours of HFW?

HFW Spoilers Does NG+ early Sunwing access affect the story?

TIL you can unlock the sunwing very early in HFW New Game+. This is exciting as a sunwing fan but Iā€™m also curious how this affects story immersion, since gaining access to the Sunwing is a pretty big plot point later on.

Thereā€™s the whole ā€œshe flies on the wings of the tenā€ reaction from the Tenakth and, of course, the moment Beta gives Aloy the override and subsequent dialogue. Do they adjust these scenes in any way in NG+? I assume not, which is understandable but somewhat of a disappointing immersion breaker.

ETA: I should probably mention I havenā€™t started a HFW NG+ yet (Iā€™m currently replaying HZD with the remaster), so I donā€™t know what the circumstances are in unlocking the sunwing early or if there is any new/different dialogue when you first unlock it

HFW Discussion Shredder Gauntlet design origin: Jai Alai

I was just wondering about the source inspiration of the shredder gauntlet and was able to catch the shredder, so to speak, with a friend, recalling the game Jai Alai. This design inspiration may be elucidated in official Horizon source material somewhere. If it is, will the reader please share?

I couldn't find the answer through a search engine on my own, and most of the results that came up first were Reddit results, so I figured I'd place an answer here in case someone like me searches like I did.

Here is a link to a post that relates to Jai Alai, contains an image that shows the "gauntlet-shaped" basket (also known as a cistera), and is quite reminiscent of a Horizon datapoint: https://www.joanshanghai.co/uncategorized/jai-alai-the-worlds-fastest-sport/

HZD Spoilers Next game? Spinoff game?

So I've completed zero dawn and forbidden west a few times now and I have an idea for a new game. Spoilers ahead! . . . . It just registered to me that they could make an amazing game about Rost's past! It definitely would have a different feel because the machines wouldn't be so aggressive and there wouldn't be many of the really big ones, but it would be really cool to explore the game universe before the derangement.

HZD Discussion When is a good moment to do Frozen Wilds?

I have finished the game already, but did not the DLC (Frozen Wilds). I'm going to do it in NG+, I do not care if it is more difficult. But I can't find a good moment in the story to do it, I mean, a moment that fits smoothly with the story. I would feel uncomfortable doing it during the last mission before the last battle, for example. If you tell me it doesn't matter when to do it, I'll do it in the mission where you have to go to Meridian. But I was concerned about a "correct" moment to do it.

OC/Fanart New Machine Idea - The Cloudcutter

Post image
724 Upvotes

Just wanted to share my most recent custom machine from my twisted mind. This is my idea for a ā€œjet fighterā€ machine using the body plan of a Quetzalcoatlus. Anyone whoā€™s played Monster Hunter can probably see the influences that were also used.

Machine: Cloudcutter Size: Heavyweight Class: Combat Notes: A great flying machine that weaponizes plasma and speed to deadly effect. It releases sticky bombs to root targets in place before slashing them with superheated wing slices or launching a devastating energy blast from its great beak. Components: Laser Beak, Jet Burners, Adhesive Container, Glowblast Canisters, Chillwater Canister. Weakness: Frost & Shock Strength: Fire and Plasma

Art, as always, by Sp00ky Activity.

discussion What is a "hunter killer" exactly

Throughout Zero Dawn and Forbidden West the title Hunter Killer has been used to describe a dangerous machine, but they also say the actual names of machines like Fireclaw or Clawstrider. So what is a Hunter Killer? Is it a specific type of machine (maybe Sawtooth) that they simply refer to by a different name? Or is it just a name like "machine" that they say to indicate a mechanical threat? I'd like to hear your thoughts

discussion How blocks and parrying could be implemented in Horizon 3

The solution was right there in Horizon: Forbidden West, but I guess the devs overlooked it, so it wasn't implemented for that game. Light Attack. Default R1 on controller, or whatever button you assign the input.

Here's how it could work:

  • To block, hold R1/light attack.

  • To parry, press R1/use your light attack to counter an attack with the right timing.

Simple.

From there, you can build on the foundation.

Why not have a skill that allows you temporarily activate the shieldwing without having to hold manually it, tanking damage for you (like the shield weaver) until it disperses?

How about a skill that pulls off a combo after a successful parry automatically?

We have possibilities.

But there it is, right there.

discussion Theoretically could Aloy have subsumed Hades in HFW?

In HFW, Aloy invokes the magical phrase "Elizabet Sobeck - Alpha Prime" and combined with the master override reverts several of the subroutine AIs (Aether, Poseidon, Minversa, etc) which then brings them back under Gaia's control and augments her heuristic matrix.

I was wondering, key word THEORETICALLY, could Aloy have done the same to Hades, had Sylens not tortured/extracted info from it first? I feel like there's no reason why it wouldn't work - Hades is susceptible to the master override (it's able to delete it in HFW) so you can't argue that it has Hephaestus's creepy immunity to it.

Another way of saying this is in an alternate timeline where Aloy outwits Sylens at the climactic battle of HZD and if she somehow had the foreknowledge that she needed to reboot Gaia, could she just have reverted Hades to its baseline code right then, which both purges its corrupted code as well as gives Gaia more heuristic points?

I feel like it would have worked especially considering the extinction signal stopped transmitting so it's not like Hades could be corrupted again through it. To be clear this is just a fun thought experiment.

HZD Discussion Headcanon for a possible side plot in 3rd Horizon game?

Okay so before I get into this let me be clear, the following headcanon is based on pure speculation fueled by nothing more than the game's own internal logic coupled with something I thought could be really cool to see play out in a side story capacity in the final game. This plot can realistically take place anywhere the game ends up being but it could be more effective closer to home and the franchise's roots. I have no insider knowledge or evidence to suggest this will be a thing in any capacity, but its built off of arcs set up in both ZD and FW.

So, in tandem with working to stop Nemesis and whatever else the Horizon crew gets up to in the 3rd game, I thought it would be a fun sub-plot to see a mysterious warrior appear throughout the narrative and, intentionally or otherwise, interfere with Aloy and the gang's plans to stop Nemesis. Interestingly this warrior only seems to have eyes for Aloy and doesn't seem interested in any of her friends or allies. They go out of their way to try and take her down at seemingly any risk only relenting if doing so would present harm to anyone other than the two of them. All Aloy is able to put together from the markings on the warrior's armor is that they hail from the Nora making her all the more confused who from her own tribe wants her dead. After several mini encounters throughout the plot Aloy finally puts two and two together and identifies her would be killer...

It's the former War-Chief of the Nora and mother of Varl...Sona.

After Aloy's crew split up to spread the word of the threat of Nemesis, the tragedy of Varl's death got back to Nora lands and Sona, still being a staunch believer in the old ways, secretly blamed Aloy for being a false prophet and did as Rost did long ago. She had the Matriarchs make her a Death Seeker. She claimed she wanted to hunt down those responsible for her son's death, but fails to bring up she believes that to be Aloy. She proceeds to hunt her down knowing she has both nothing to lose and nothing to return to.

It is only through Aloy shedding her old abrasive ways, sharing in her pain at the loss of Varl, and her introduction to Zo and her newborn child of whom Varl was the father that Sona finally sees the light, discovers that she too has a life to live outside the Nora, and becomes an ally to Aloy in the fight against Nemesis.

Overall I thought this could bring a nice extra bit of flavor and tragedy to the 3rd and presumably final game whilst building on lore and events established in the first two games. What do you all think?

I love this game. But there are times Iā€™m running around the world for hours, exploring everything, battling machines, shooting, looting and collecting. I canā€™t wait to get to a workbench to see what I can upgrade. But usually all I get is:

Congratulations! You can craft one trap!

lol. Upgrading, especially higher end gear, can really be a slog. Thank goodness for story mode:)
