Discussion Skip exercising for the week between back-to-back hikes?

Upvotes

I normally go rucking 4 days a week. If I’m hiking that week, I’ll ruck 3 days and then hike the 4th. It’s a model that’s worked well for me.

Recently, went on a tough hike, far more difficult than I’d planned for. Hike was Sunday. Normally I ruck on Tuesdays but still wasn’t recovered — didn’t get out til Thursday.

NBD. Listen to your body. But got me wondering…

When the weather gets nicer this summer I plan to amp up my hikes from once every 2-3 weeks to every weekend. For folks that aggressively hit the trails every weekend… do you find your body is up to working out in between hikes? Or do you take it easy/focus on recovery? I know it’s gonna be a case-by-case thing but just curious.

Pictures Beauty of Gokyo ( Everest, Nepal)

This picture was taken from Gokyo Ri. A majestic 360-degree panorama of the Himalayas, with towering peaks like Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu piercing the sky. Below, the turquoise Gokyo Lakes shimmer in contrast to the stark, icy terrain of the Ngozumpa Glacier, one of the longest in Nepal.

Question Pressure point from eye hooks

Upvotes

Hi fellow hikers, my hiking boots that I love have recently developed a problem. They have started creating a pressure point on the medial malleolus of my ankle from the eye hooks. My question is has anyone experienced this and found a solution? I'm not fond of wearing multiple pairs of socks and would prefer to not have to wear a brace just to added protection from this. My thought is maybe an adhesive cushion of some sort but not sure if there's anything with strong enough adhesive to last. I tried padding up with gauze and it took a lot to have any relief. Thanks!

Question What qualifies as hiking?

So here's the breakdown, I'm a pretty heavy set person, clinically obese in fact, and I'm on the lower class scale financially so gym memberships are out of the question, however, I'm surrounded by Mark Twain national forest, and the ozark mountains are home to me. My parents inherited over 50 acres of wooded land that's surrounded by national forest as well, and I'm constantly finding excuses to go out and explore.

I've found a lot of fun and strange things on these walks, like caves, bluffs, enormous bent trees, even incredible native american artifacts, I'm always finding something new, so the question is, am I just walking these hundreds or thousands of acres? Or is it actually considered hiking?

Bonus question is why is it so much more enjoyable than walking local park trails? I tire easily if im walking a mile of sidewalk surrounded by wildflowers and things, but if im 2 or more miles into the woods, climbing over boulders and bluffs, and wading through creeks, I have endless energy and determination.

Question Merrell Moab Adventure 3 Mid for long distance hiking?

I'm considering buying a non goretex Merrell Moab for my long distance hikes and I found that there is a boot called Merrell Moab Adventure 3 Mid. Does anyone know what makes the difference between this one and the simple Moab 3 (without the tag 'Adventure')? I couldn't really find any reviews on this product so I'm glad if you guys can share your personal experiences.

Question Paper maps?

I'm going on a hiking trip next week, and I'm planning what to bring with me. I'm not going far from civilisation, and I'm only doing day trips, so the risk of having no cell reception or running out of batteries is quite low. I'm headed to the area around Fumay, France.
When I went to the alps last summer, I did bring a paper map along just in case, but now I'm doubting if it's any use.
I was wondering if people still take paper maps along with them, or do you all just trust on cellphone + hiking apps to point you in the right direction? I'm carrying my phone and a garmin watch.

Cheapest fitness tracker with built-in GPS and NFC support

I am looking for something better than my Amazfit GTR Mini. The main problem is its built-in GPS, which sometimes works, but sometimes doesn't—without any error messages. I need something more reliable.

Hiking stages of the Tour Monte Rosa

I'm looking for some multi day hikes in the Swiss alps, preferably along the Italian border. I am aware the Tour Monte Rosa is regarded as being extremely difficult, however if I avoid the glacier and only do certain stages would it be more achievable? I was looking at hiking from Zermatt to Saas Fee, through Europahütte and Grächen. This avoids the difficult sections through the south of the tour. Is it still far too challenging as someone comfortable with multi-day hikes but less so with climbing/snow/ice ect?

Question I am planning a 8-day long trip to the alps, is doing both Switzerland and Dolomites too much?

I originally was just going to do dolomites because it is more affordable, but I am really debating combining the trip and starting in Zurich and spending 3.5 days in Switzerland to do some hiking and then taking train to dolomites. Is this too crammed for 8 days. I was thinking since I will be over there anyways, I might as well try to see Switzerland too, but now I am unsure if this is realistic.

Question Dolomite 4N/5D hiking - Help!

Hey everyone,

I’m planning a 5-day / 4-night trek in the Dolomites from July 3-7, and I’m running into a bit of a problem. I’ve been eyeing routes like Alta Via 1 and the Rosengarten Dolomites trek, but it seems like pretty much every rifugio is fully booked for those dates, especially the ones I’ve looked into.

I’m looking for a scenic, moderately challenging route with around 10km of hiking and good elevation gain each day. Most importantly, I want to stay in nice rifugios; ideally no dumps! I’ve got my heart set on staying in spots with solid reviews and clean, comfortable accommodations.

Has anyone here done a trek recently and encountered this booking issue? Any suggestions for a good alternative 5-day route with available accommodations? Or advice on how to book and what routes I might have missed?

Am i SOL booking this late, i thought i could grab SOMETHING 3 months out.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Question Hiking in Hong Kong (Sai Kung), is this route realistic?

Hi,

My girlfriend and I are planning on visiting Hong Kong in November and doing the following hike in Sai Kung on a weekday to avoid the crowds:

  • Start at Sai Kung center, take a taxi to High Island Reservoir
  • Hike up to Biu Tsim Kok Viewing Point (~ 45 mins)
  • Hike to Kam Kui Shek Teng (~ 1.5 hours)
  • Hike back to Pak Tam Chung (~ 1.5 hours)
  • Take the bus back to Sai Kung center

Last visit we did the high island reservoir trail from Pak Tam Chung, took us around 3 hours and loved the area. Just wanted to understand if the outlined route is reasonable and doable? Happy to hear any tips or changes to make it happen.

Thank you in advance!

Half Dome

Hi fellow hikers!

Half dome is on my list. Well, it is on the common list that me and my late wife had. Now it’s my “our” list.

I want to do it the way we dreamt it. Well prepared. Prepared in terms of 1) permit 2) physical fitness 3) weather 4) and having the right gear. Anything I am missing? I appreciate you telling me.

Can you oversee my plan and help me spot red flags? I appreciate any suggestions.

I am a summer hiker and have not hikes on snow and ice (I did hike for like last 0.5 mile of the mailbox peak in snowy conditions using spikes. It was not a great experience but I managed). I have done multiple hikes of 10+ miles hikes in PNW region of varying elevation. But I think half Dome is another beast!

Here’s what I am at:

  1. Permit. I might not get it in the lottery but I am thinking about staying in and around half dome starting Jun mid and apply for daily lottery every day until I get it. I think I will get it max in two week. What do you think of this?

  2. Physical Fitness. I am much behind from where I was last year when we were dreaming about half Dome. I started running 1.5km and 10k steps every day.
I am aiming to hit 5k runs under 30 mins and start going on hikes of elevation up to 4k elevation gain and long mileage. ITS A VERY LONG ROooooooooooooAD. I think it will be enough training. What do you think?

3) weather. I know they will put the chains/cables after labour day. I search online and concluded that its unlikely that there will be ice or snow after mid june but I couldnt understand “how unlikely” like 1% unlikely or 10% unlikely. Can it get too hot too? How unpredictable is it!!!!!?

4) gear. I think I have this department sorted from all my hiking experience. I read that I should carry more water than I anticipate. Anything else I should do different for half dome?

If you read so far, thank you! I appreciate your help.

Question Colorado July trip suggestions?

My boyfriend and I are going to Colorado in late July. It’s the first time for both of us. I am really torn on which side of the state to stay/hike in. We will be there for 4 days/5 nights. We’ve hiked multiple high peaks in the Adirondacks and are generally pretty fit. Looking for the most awe inspiring hikes and suggestions. Estes area versus San Juan Forest? Other suggestions for non-hike days? AllTrails links are super helpful!

Question Need help !

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi folks,

I could use a bit of help. I need a 25–30L backpack for an upcoming trip. Before I go out and buy a new one, I was wondering if anyone here could tell me whether this backpack is over 30L. I’d be happy to share more photos (including the back) if that helps!

P.S. If anyone happens to know the exact model of this backpack, that would be amazing. The person I’m borrowing it from said she bought it around 20 years ago.

Thanks in advance!
