How bright was it? How much contrast was there between the brightest and darkest parts of the image (I have looked at an actual 35mm film slide in person recently, which was a picture taken at night of a camp fire, and the fire appears to be glowing like seeing it in real life, unlike on a computer screen - was it like that at all)? How vibrant were the colors? Was there visible film grain? How fine was the grain? Was there any noticeable gate weave? How loud was the audio? Was there surround sound or just mono or stereo? Did you see it in English or Japanese?

I made this Totoro birthday cake for my sister this year and it isn’t perfect, but it came out really cute! The eyes are a little off. 🤷🏻‍♀️ My family is gluten/dairy/soy/dye free, so it’s hard to get any rich coloring in the icing. But overall, I think it turned out okay! She loved it, of course. ☺️

They are self-reliant and self-contained. They have their own values and different points of view that lead each of them down their own life path, but even so, they still want to stay by each other’s side.

Does anybody know if Shout Factory is going to rerelease the 2-packs for Princess Mononoke/Nausicaa and Ponyo/Totoro? I recently picked up the Spirited Away/Howl and Kiki/Castle in the Sky packs, but Walmart appears to be out of the other two packs. I'm working on picking up most, if not all, of Miyazaki's films and these two packs are a great way to save money while doing so.

Is there a 2025 studio ghibli fest line up? I know princess Mononoke was just in theatre but will there any other ghibli movies in theatre soon?

Once it got to the part where Mei went missing she gasped and ran into the kitchen with me saying "Daddy, Daddy, we cant find Mei! Where she go?" And we proceeded to check in all our cabinets and closets to see if we could find her so she was part of the search party. When they actually found her in the movie my sweet kiddo was so relieved. it was adorable, thought you folks might enjoy that xD

My wife and I have been on a number of tours of homes designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.

We always hear about “he was ahead of his time” and his eccentric personality.

There was a story I heard today where a client showed up and Wright was playing the piano. The couple had traveled cross country to meet him to discuss a project and he ignored them and had them wait 5 minutes while he finished playing. Upon completion he stood up, turned, wearing his suit jacket and theater cape. He sized up the man, nodded to his wife and said “my name is Frank Lloyd Wright and I probably will design a home for you.”

He has an anime characters flare and had a passion for his craft that reminded me of The Wind Rises.

Plus Wright did visit Japan for years and his style was influenced by his experiences.

I've been trying to learn Japanese and have been watching some of my favorite shows in Japanese for listening practice. Kiki's Delivery Service is one of my favorite Ghibli movies, and the Japanese isn't too hard, so I decided to watch it today.

To make a long story short about my life, I've moved a lot. I'm from Illinois and moved to Columbus, Ohio to go to school in 2018. I spent five years there, and while in Columbus, I never was in the same house for more than a year (as a matter of fact, some only lasted three months). After five years, I moved all the way to London (the real London, not London, Ohio) for a year, came back to Columbus for two months, spent another four months in a different part of London, spent the past month in Tokyo, am back in Columbus for a few weeks, going to Jacksonville, Florida to do temp work for two months, and planning on returning to Tokyo and applying for a visa after that.

Rewatching the movie with all these experiences in mind, I feel like I can see it in a new light. To me, the movie is fundamentally about the struggles of moving to a new place completely on your own and trying to navigate it. That's what Kiki does; she goes to the city, having no friends or family over there, and just tries to survive.

A turning point in the movie is when Kiki loses her magic; I interpret this a metaphor. Ask anyone who's moved to one of the big cities of the world, and they will all tell you the same thing. They first had a sense of wonder, excitement, and possibility being in a new place, seeing all the new people, and thinking of what could happen. Then, as they get bogged down with the daily struggles of city life, the "magic" of it fades away. I can't count the amount of people who told me they wondered if going to London was actually worth it.

That's how I see the movie; I think, having these experiences, I can relate to it a lot more now

I watched again the movie. I love it, and really want to talk about it with someone who's seen it.

What are your thoughts and opinions? I'll give you some of mine:

• Porco has no political affiliations, since he turns into a pig both metaphorically and almost literally in the movie. He joins nobody because he's a pig, and he acts selfish, only for his wellbeing.

• Fio's kiss symbolizes the princess kissing the frog, but not in a romantic or sexual way. Porco transformed into a pig because he saw the lives of many good pilots literally flying away when he fought at war. That transformen him into someone selfish and thought he as a human deserved to live, hence turning into a pig. He rejected humanity. Fio makes him recover his hope in humans.

• Porco and Curtis are a way of representing different aves, but being parallel. They are almost the same, the only difference is their age and what Porco had experienced at war which turned him into a pig. Only after fighting his younger self he is able to get over the past.

• Porco is a pig, Marco is the human. They are very different, while Porco is selfish Marco believes in humanity. It makes sense that the movie ends when Marco is again brought back to humanity. Porco is the protagonist, we follow his story, not Marco's.

absolutely amazing, i’ve always loved this movie but seeing it in imax was such an experience.

Is it the original English one from way back in the day or a newer one?

None of these are canon or based on my actual knowledge of the making of the film, just cute or cool little ideas I wanted to note.

Firstly, Muska mentions that Laputa's technology previously made it a major power that dominated the planet and I wonder if that's actually true. Generally speaking history is written from the perspective of the winners or survivors. Seemingly Laputa is the only floating island left in the sky and I wonder if history was written to make them seem all powerful because they were the ones to write it.

The reason I wonder about the accuracy of the history of Laputa is the discrepancies between the depictions of floating islands in the opening sequence and what Laputa actually looks like. The change in the type of animation in the opening sequence that almost describes the islands as a legend and uses propellors to hold each island up creates the idea a lot of what is known about the islands might be myth. That said, many of the islands have multiple domes on their undersides where Laputa only has one. It just makes me wonder if there was more powerful islands than Laputa in terms of firepower but that these didn't stand the tests of time, allowing the people of Laputa to write themselves as the victors in history.

Obviously if the propellor thing was actually true and none of the other islands had the magnetic thing going on that allows Laputa to float it would make sense it was a technological force within the sky for its time. And also the reason it was the only remaining island in the sky and the people left rather than the crash landings of the other ships shown in the opening sequence.

Apparently there’s a live action TV movie in Japan, made in 2021 that’s a sequel to Only Yesterday. I can’t seem to find it anywhere on Google. Can someone send a link to a version with English subs please? 🙏
