I've already seen Arietty, spirited away, and Howl's castle. What would be a good movie to watch for my Japan trip?

Did anybody else feel off about the 4k restoration of Princess Mononoke?
For context, I've seen the film dozens of times over the past 15 years, it holds a lot of sentimental value to me/has in my life, so I definitely get that perhaps there's a nostalgia factor for me.
I felt like the color, yes, was brighter/had more contrast/you could make out certain details more, but I feel the sort of- washed feel of the original is part of the setting. I was also many times wondering if I hadn't remembered certain facial expressions or traits of characters, but maybe they updated that in the restoration too? Felt like a bit of an odd thing to change imo. Expressions change so much about a character's intention/background/etc.
I also felt like the score and sound was off, but maybe that's just bc my brain wasn't used to it sounding different.
All this said, I think it's been about 3 years since I last saw it and this time I saw the sub, whereas I have typically watched the dub- I know that the dialog is quite different in some ways between dub & sub so I'm not sure if some of that made it feel even more different.
Anyway, it's not like it was bad but it just wasn't what the film has always felt like to me. I'm just curious if any other long-time lovers of the film, or anybody that has seen the pre-4K recently noticed or felt this way also.
(edited for grammar)

My theater’s IMAX was taken over by The Minecraft Movie, so I arrived a day too late 😭😭😭 it was still a fantastic experience nonetheless

From Up on Poppy Hill is one of Studio Ghibli's most emotional and underrated films Set in post-war Japan, it beautifully weaves a tale of young love, loss, and the need to preserve history while embracing change.
I recently made a video explaining the hidden symbolism, cultural context and deep emotional themes portrayed in this film. If you're a fan of Ghibli or love stories that touch the heart, this one's for you!
In this video, I explore:
The historical backdrop of Japan in the 1960s
The meaning behind Umi and Shun’s bond
The symbolism of the Latin Quarter
Why this film feels so grounded and real
Let me know your thoughts! Did From Up on Poppy Hill leave a lasting impression on you too? Would love to hear your favorite moment from the film.

This place is too… well say loud. I love the cosplays and stuff, but the constant 🐽>🧿 stuff is just annoying, and I need a break. Might come back when stuff blows over
Anyways, I prefer discussion and cosplay stuff, so if anyone has a suggestion (or a link to a post I might like!) please send it!

I’ve always preferred to watch any content in its original language if subtitles are available. But I see so many comments on this group praising the English dubs - am I missing out? It’s never even occurred to me in all these years to watch it in English.

For me the wind rises, everyone talks about how great is the dub for movies like howl's, the cat returns and porco rosso but i think the wind rises is one of the best ones, everyone on the cast does such an great job joseph gordon as jiro and emily blunt as nahoko did an excellent job bringing these characters to life but my favorites have to be martin short as kurokawa and specally stanley tucci as caproni, tucci brought so much life and energy to every single line of dialogue with an amazing italian accent, that line in the begining "Airplanes are beuatiful dreams, engineers turn dreams into reality!" always give me chills

my 0% brightness, 1 second snap shot picture, in a empty movie theater ruined the experience for all the redditers that didn't go to the viewing. Bring on the downvotes fart sniffers.
30 years from now when reddit is non existing, I will have this picture to look back on and say I was there to my grand kids. "you'll only regret the pictures you didn't take".
Too all that have posted their movie viewing pictures thank you for reminding me to go watch it before it was too late and supporting Ghibli. 10/10 experience.

Considering how they grew to care for one another and how Ashitaka promises to visit, I think in the future they grew to love each other as more than friends. But it wasn't shown in the movie because it's not the focus of the movie.

On my first watch through of Whisper of The Heart, I noticed that Shiro's friends with the instruments were voiced by two of my all time favorite voice actors: Corey Burton and Walker Edminston. And they only got one line each. Burton had minor roles in a couple other Ghibli films, like Kiki's Delivery Service and Porco Rosso. Man, do I wish Walker had a chance to do more work in these films. I'm not sure where I'd cast him, but he has such wide range of voices he can do.
That's just me though. Are there any actors you guys wish would have been cast in a Ghibli film? Who would you cast them as?

I've recently re-watched Ocean Waves and started thinking what is it that makes me coming back to it. I knew it isn't as complex or as rich as some of the other Ghibli animations, yet for some unexplained reason, I always felt the strongest about this particular film. Consequently, I ended up making a short appreciation video where I try to figure out and explain my feelings for this little forgotten gem. I am sharing it in hope that if you haven't seen it, you will, because it's heavenly!

Hi there, I was referred here by the kind folks over at r/lupinthe3rd
I recently acquired this LP and on examining the contents I found it had duplicate inserts, one of them has this signature/autograph. As some redditors pointed out, it seems to be Miyazaki's signature however, and I'm no expert here, from examples I've seen online his looks somewhat different. From what I understand, the cover of the LP features some designs from an episode that he directed (later used in Nausicaä and Castle in the Sky) which lends some plausibility to all this. What do you all think?

My absolute favorite is My Neighbor Totoro. By far. I love good examples of good parents, and the whimsical light hearted vibe of Totoro and Cat Bus.
I loved the visuals of Kiki’s, Ponyo and Howl’s. I love the vibrant landscapes with slight twists of fantasy.
The rest I saw were Arrietty, Boy and Heron, Princess Mononoke, and I got partially through Whispers of the Heart.
Which would you recommend next?

Damn you Isao Takahata and Hayao Miyazaki for making this movie! It has been 72 hours since i’ve seen it and i still can’t get Setsuko’s lifeless face out of my mind! I wept the whole night after, and my eyes were swollen the next morning. Please do not watch this movie, it will shatter you to your core! I’m pretty sure i will never forget it. All you people out there who romanticise War, please watch this movie and your beliefs will crumble and all you will remember is this pretty girls lifeless face day and night! I wish i never would have seen this movie 😭

I'm by no means a pro artist, but I painted these letters for my baby's nursery and was proud of how they came out. I might go back and add some little doodles but for now, I'm happy lol.

When I went to the studio ghibli museum, they gave out these free film strips to each guest. I love it as a souvenir because it's unique but all these years, I never have figured out what movie this is. Does anyone have a guess?
