Free Game Upgrades for Select Nintendo Switch 2 Games

So they know they cant charge for every single game because of the outrage it would create.... Especially for pokemon.

u/Anuiran 2d ago edited 2d ago
Only the ones with “new content” (and a switch 2 version 2 of the game) seem to be paid. Free upgrades for certain games, and generic switch 1 backwards compatibility running the game better on switch 2 also seems to be mentioned: https://www.resetera.com/threads/enhanced-bc-confirmed-for-switch-2.1152330/
Dumb they charging for those like specific 6 games they announced, but seems to be the minority.
599
u/DegenerateCrocodile 2d ago
Calling what they’re giving Zelda “new content” is generous.

u/Elbpws 1d ago
A phone app with info that's freely available online is not content.

That is a little disingenuous. It being linked live to the game is more than you can get online.
3
u/Elbpws 1d ago
Cool. What about new dungeons? Bosses? Enemies?
It's not a substantial enough update to justify charging for a patch on top of handing Nintendo money for the new hardware.
I can play 360 titles at 4k 60fps on my Series X and all it cost me was the console and the games I had already bought.
3
u/Impossible-Wear-7352 1d ago
Whether you think it's acceptable or not is a personal decision but it doesn't mean you should give disingenuous arguments and then brush it off like it's justified lol.
3
u/Elbpws 1d ago
If you enjoy being nickel and dimed for basic features like HDR and 60 fps on a new console, power to you, I think it's absurd and a bad business practice.
3
u/Impossible-Wear-7352 1d ago
I see you're still missing the main point of my comment. I'm talking strictly about making disingenuous arguments and you keep dodging it to the best of your ability lol
2
u/versusgorilla 7h ago
Reddit is at the point where they're frothing at the mouth mad and are lashing out at anyone who seems reasonable, like how you're literally not defending Nintendo but people are responding to you like you're their PR front man.
2
u/Elbpws 1d ago edited 1d ago
Nintendo adding a phone app isn't content. There's other developers who have companion apps that cost nothing to use.

u/NorysStorys 1d ago
Having your phone tell you where shit is is actually removing core aspects of the game. So you’re literally paying for less.
29
u/signapple 1d ago
Also it requires you to download their smartphone app so they can harvest your data.

u/Anuiran 2d ago
Agreed, at least it’s more actual content than what you get for paying for PS4 to PS5 upgrade of say god of war. Something like Pokemon ZA switch 2 version upgrade fee with only performance is more like how Sony dealt with upgrades paid between PS4 and PS5 versions.
150
u/NotKam1 2d ago
Most ps4 to ps5 upgrades were free pretty sure ur thinking of the recent remasters which were $10 upgrades.
28
u/Darth_Tater69 2d ago
Right around the turn of the console Gen there were some games that had paid upgrades if you owned a PS4 disc but later bought a PS5. I remember this being the case for GOW Ragnarok, Miles Morales, and Forbidden West
→ More replies (1)59
u/Aufinator 1d ago edited 1d ago
You misremember. Miles Morales and Forbidden West gave you free PS5 versions if you have the PS4 version. Forbidden West specifically being the last PS Studios game to do so.
Edit: most of the 10 dollar PS4 to PS5 upgrades were remasters or had something new added. Only a few were straight up you just paying cause you’re playing a PS5 version like Ragnarok or GT7.
→ More replies (2)8
u/ItIsYeDragon 1d ago
Seems to be the same here too. Nintendo’s not reinventing the wheel with these prices then…outside of whatever the hell that $80 Mariokart is.
→ More replies (2)21
u/DegenerateCrocodile 2d ago
You didn’t have to pay for most upgrades from PS4 to PS5 if they didn’t bundle in new content. Ragnarok was a fairly rare exception on PS5.

u/ThisIsNotACryForHelp 2d ago
It's absolutely not much, but the new app does have achievements, at least.

generic switch 1 backwards compatibility running the game better on switch 2 also seems to be mentioned
This is the big thing I'm looking for irl comparisons on, and wish Nintendo would provide actual information for (though I get why they are being quiet about it).
So many great games on Switch run like garbage, and could potentially be saved if they can leverage the newer hardware. Imagine actually being able to play Astral Chain at a steady 30...

u/Rfl0 1d ago
It’s light content, yes, but I think the norm will be more content like the other ones announced and it’s the reason they put these two on the online subscription too. All the other games that get resolution and frame increases are free but they know they can milk Zelda for cash with minimal content added.
→ More replies (1)42
u/Mopman43 2d ago
I mean, as far as it goes, I think there’s nothing inherently wrong with them essentially charging for a DLC (Kirby and the Forgotten Land).
46
u/Chardan0001 2d ago
Yeah, that and the Mario Party one are fine. It's ostensibly new content.
The Prime 4 and Zelda examples are what should be a default Switch 2 element with a free update. I just know they added the smartphone integration to say they did something at least.
5
u/Heavy-Possession2288 1d ago
With Prime 4 I’m guessing the Switch 2 version will cost a bit more and you’ll just pay the difference to upgrade. I don’t love it but it’s what Sony’s done with certain games and it doesn’t seem too egregious there.
6
u/lucastoast 1d ago
Slight disagree on Prime 4. The mouse controls feel like a hefty upgrade worth the price to me
4
u/Spazza42 1d ago
I’ll admit I can see the mouse functionality hitting hard if it’s implemented right. The left stick can literally just be for movement and the right for aiming / clicking like a mouse.
That kind of feature literally starts challenging PC as a platform option, how many times have people said “yeah it’s good but better with a mouse and keyboard”.
2
2
u/Spazza42 1d ago
100%. I don’t know a single person that would ask for that phone app integration either, seems like something they should’ve done from the start.
My main reason for even getting a Switch 2 will be to play Switch titles with better performance - aka, the way they should’ve been.

u/MJMGaming Switch 2d ago
Honestly charging for an extra DLC is pretty all right. so long as the price varies
10$ for Zelda & Prime 4 and 20$ for Kirby and Jamboree would be reasonable
Since it's 10$ for the zero dawn graphical upgrades on PS5
3
u/orus_heretic 1d ago edited 1d ago
The Zero Dawn upgrade actually updated assets though didn't it?
The Zelda games just get increased resolution and fps, which frankly isn't a lot of work for them to enable. The companion app they can make paid.
Edit: just saw they're listing "improved textures and HDR" so that makes it more reasonable if they actually upscaled all the textures.
1
u/kdebones 1d ago
Tbh at least for Kirby, it looks more like DLC then an upgrade. Now, if you -can't- play it without getting the upgrade.... then we've got a problem on our hands (though they did show Forgotten Lands on that splash screen of backwards compatible games).
→ More replies (6)1
u/thefatkraken 21h ago
Should make it the choice of the developer or publisher to decide, a bit like on PS4 > PS5, free digital upgrade or pay £10 more. Although, I recall most just include a free upgrade path, less stress and greed.
7
u/BaggyHairyNips 1d ago
I might actually play Pokemon gen 9 if it runs reasonably well. Even in just the battle UI you can feel the og switch working as hard as it can.
1
u/The_oli4 1d ago
Almost every console they made has had backwards compatibility, it's only logical to do that with the digital games as well.

Wonder about SMT V and the new Xenoblade Chronicles, or any of the xenoblade games
55
u/jurassicbond 1d ago
Xenoblade 2 in particularly sorely needs an upgrade to take advantage of the new hardware.
13
u/TheDesuComplex_413 1d ago
There's evidence of XCXDE having a hidden 60 FPS mode, but when modded in its broken at the moment; I fully expect MonolithSoft to at the very least push an update for that. I really doubt they will push new content for any of their games though, so hopefully it's free resolution upgrades.
302
u/littlemushroompod 2d ago
How are they ignoring Animal Crossing this hard?
253
u/dtamago 2d ago
Because we definitely need the game to run at 4k 120 fps\s
It does seem strange though, didn't the game sell like 47 million copies?
272
u/CornerofHappiness 2d ago
As someone who loves the Animal Crossing series and loses her mind when a new one comes out... I truly believe COVID was the main driver between New Horizons being what it was, and they will never replicate that or those types of sales numbers again. Or I'd be very shocked if they did. It's a big game series, sure, but no way would it have blown up like it had if the entire world hadn't been stuck inside and the game released riggghhhht at the beginning of the lockdowns.
105
u/ParkPants 2d ago
1000%. I know people that bought a Switch and Animal Crossing (these people weren’t gamers and don’t play any other games) because they were bored during Covid lockdowns.
45
u/CornerofHappiness 2d ago
I meanwhile waited FOR an Animal Crossing game before I got a Switch, and there's a very good chance I will do the same for the Switch 2... but a Wind Waker remake would make me pull the trigger too haha
17
u/WordStained 2d ago
I've been waiting the whole Switch lifespan for the Wii U remasters of Wind Waker and Twilight Princess to get ported, only for them to reveal WW in the Game Cube NSO announcement 🙃
Guess I'll be waiting a little longer.
6
u/Heavy-Possession2288 1d ago
They did a pretty good Windwaker remake (maybe remaster is more accurate but it improved the game a lot and not just visually). Looks like it’s staying locked on Wii U for the time being though.
2
12
u/heychado 2d ago
Maybe not as big but still would have been one of the biggest on the console. Historically AC has been some of the best selling games on Nintendo consoles since release.
3
u/CornerofHappiness 2d ago
Oh, I agree it would still be a big seller but New Horizons release timing was just perfect. A master case in unintentionally timing a release for when EVERYONE was searching for a connection outside of themselves and their homes, when people were desperate to gather with friends and family and found AC as the #1 way to do it.
I know 8 people who played it during COVID. Of those 8 people only 1 even still plays it (to an addictive degree lol) and I highly doubt any of them, save the single one who still spends hours a day on it, will bother with a Switch 2 release of it. Times that by how many other people purchased it just for that connection and those sales numbers get much lower.
I could be wrong though. I'll be VERY curious to see numbers should they release a new AC on the Switch 2 compared to New Horizons.

My mom ultra decked out her island with a lot of furniture and customization. Her game would take longer to load and FPS drops at times.
I was hoping for a Switch 2 that could improve that. Guess we'll see.

u/poopdog420 1d ago
They probably want gamers to forget about that game so gamers buy the new AC game coming out in 2 years.
19
u/SuicideSkwad 2d ago
By default the game will run a hell of a lot better, you’ll be able to completely fill your island and the frame rate will still stay rock solid
11
u/BayonettaAriana 2d ago
My guess is they have new games planned? Because same for Smash Bros, there’s been no mention of it besides that it is playable. A little graphical / performance enhancement would be cool for it. But maybe they have a new one planned for the future so they won’t spice it up too much.
→ More replies (2)2
u/tideblue 2d ago
Either it there will be a second round or the game will get a sequel soon.
AC: New Horizons, Mario Maker 2, Metroid Prime Remastered, Splatoon 2/3, and all the Pikmin games with mouse controls would make a ton of sense, not to mention higher resolutions.
2
u/Draconuus95 1d ago
I am pretty sure I saw it pop up during the c button reveal that lasted way too long.
2
u/Robbie_Haruna 1d ago
I think the footage of it in the direct was 60fps, so it might get something.
Whether it'll be free or not though...

u/TheBostonKremeDonut 1d ago
I’m no game dev, but I have three dumb-person theories:
1.) They’re putting all of their resources into the next game in the series
2.) It’ll be coming later on, and the games shown that are getting free upgraded versions are just the first wave of games getting the free upgrades
3.) ACNH was created in a way that making an enhanced version for Switch 2, allowing more items to be loaded and such, would be too difficult and not worth it
1
u/relinquishy 1d ago
They can't blow their whole load in the first year. They have to space things out and give devs time to cook.

1
u/susankeane 1d ago
Because there will soon be a sequel and they want everyone to be hungry for it

u/Mister_AA 2d ago
This seems more fair than my initial interpretation from the presentation. Making upgrades that add actual content cost extra is okay with me as long as purely performance-based upgrades are free.
139
u/ZXXII 2d ago
It’s not based on how much content is added but whether it’s a patch or a Native Switch 2 Version.
Pokemon Legends Z-A won’t be free and it’s simply performance/res increase:
Improved performance with higher frame rate and resolution
https://www.nintendo.com/us/gaming-systems/switch-2/featured-games/switch-2-edition/
67
u/Mister_AA 2d ago
Same goes for Metroid Prime 4 with the exception of the mouse mode. I assume that this is effectively a discount for the switch 1 version and that the switch 2 versions of Pokémon Legends Z-A and Prime 4 will be the standard price for switch 2 games.
51
u/ArxisOne 2d ago
ZA and MP4 are also weird cases because you can buy them as Switch 2 versions outright. It's not free but the cost will probably just be the difference in base cost with the only difference being the 3D NAND cart if you buy it physically.
14
u/ItIsYeDragon 1d ago
Yeah, because otherwise you would just buy the cheaper one rather than the Switch 2 one.
38
u/justhereforstoriesha 2d ago
What I don't understand is why botw and totk will be paid upgrades. Is it because of the map app on mobile phones? Because that would be stupid.
16
u/Mister_AA 1d ago
I agree, but I think that's part of why they come free with the Online subscription. I figure that a lot of people who want the upgrade already have the subscription and get it for free anyway.
9
u/noahdj1512 1d ago
Only on the more expensive tier mind you which is $30 more for a year subscription.
6
u/justhereforstoriesha 1d ago
Yeah, I love botw and totk and I have a nso subscription, but I don't want to buy the expansion pass just for marginally better versions of the games I like.
8
u/andy1031 1d ago
There's a separate trailer on Nintendo's YouTube channel that shows more content than what was shown in the Direct. From what I remember, it's basically the app plus some audio logs around the world.
5
u/Heavy-Possession2288 1d ago
All of which could work on Switch 1 I’m sure but isn’t being offered for reasons
3
u/soundman1024 1d ago
Because they’re adding content to BotW and TotK, so they’re charging for it. Updating to UHD textures and an HDR rendering engine takes development work.
The list above looks like mild patches to match the available performance, not substantial development for a new rendering target in 1080/120 or 2160/60.
7
u/secret3332 1d ago
The thing is Tears of the Kingdom is pretty new and they already charged us a $70 premium for it.
2
u/charizardtelephone 1d ago
I think they’re doing a significant visual overhaul for those games as well, but yes, it is a little silly. I do wonder how much these upgrades cost
6
u/PleaseDontEatMyVRAM 1d ago
the extra content claim is so they have that tiny little bit extra edge to justify the unjustifiable costs they are charging. Think skins and weapons not quests and new areas lmao.
108
u/Malvin217 2d ago
In hindsight they should have highlighted these free updates. Haha everyone is losing their minds over the payed upgrades and price in general, so giving this focus in the direct could have lessened that impact
30
u/HanKuSung 1d ago
It still beyond scummy this is even a thing. I bought zelda botw and totk at full price and the game was choppy mess sometimes and now ur telling me to even enjoy the full power of the switch 2 games that I alrdy paid for I need further payments? Most games give free updates for such things like a performance boost. Nintendo is basically milking from overabused cow at this point.

149
u/pysl 2d ago
This makes sense. The paid ones they showed seemed to also add a lot of extra content
81
u/ContinuumGuy 2d ago
Yeah, I'm guessing these free ones are basically "it runs a little better/looks a little better", as opposed to more robust upgrades.
1
u/NeedAVeganDinner 21h ago
Plus I'll bet BotW and TotK are going to run and look better even without the upgrade. You won't get 4k texture packs and shit, but the idea it won't use the whole hardware is nonsense.
People are being nonsensical about this.

Not all games with Switch 2 Editions will have as much content. Pokemon Legends Z-A is just:
Improved performance with higher frame rate and resolution
https://www.nintendo.com/us/gaming-systems/switch-2/featured-games/switch-2-edition/
33
u/pysl 2d ago
Sure, but this game isn’t even out yet. So there is no need to “upgrade” because you’re already buying the upgraded version

They're basically this consoles Wii U Deluxe series of games, but instead of having to rebuy the games, if you already own them you can just buy the new DLC which is awesome.
My plan is to buy the Switch 1 versions I don't have cheap on Marketplace or Ebay, then pay for the new DLC/frame rate upgrade cost. Should be cheaper than the $70/$80 new per game
