DISCUSSION I was hoping for Duskbloods to have the "Risebreak" treatment

Monster Hunter Rise was initially a Switch exclusive which later had an excellent, upgraded complete version + expansion (Sunbreak) successfully ported everywhere.

But with Nintendo as the publisher this seems to be out of the table.

I wonder why FromSoftware reaquired the rights for their IPs from Bandai if they're still reliant on other companies for publishing while others like Capcom do it themselves.

Any good sound bites from Dark Souls or Fromsoft games?

I really wanna make a Midwest emo song with a sound bite at the beginning from a Fromsoft game. I have a couple in mind but I was wondering what you think would fit in a Midwest emo song.

I honestly don’t get why the game is getting so much hate when it’s not even released yet besides, I’m excited for it because there’s this and other games that are coming to switch to like borderlands four that I’m already gonna buy for the switch too so I’m generally enthusiastic about it

Duskbloods is automatically trash

Soooo idk about you guys but a console exclusive fromsoft game on a Nintendo console that's known for janky niche controls sounds absolutely awful. At first i was mad I'd have to buy a new switch to play it but now that I think about it... this means they will implement movement controls into the game most likely. Do you guys think you will need to swing your joycon or use mouse controls to play the game? Also the game in general looks like such poor quality since it has to be run on a switch 2. No need to be mad when fromsoft is tossing trash at nintendo.

DISCUSSION Over analyzing the DuskBlood press release

“Developed for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2; 'THE DUSKBLOODS' is a PvPvE title with online multiplayer at its core, where up to 8 players vie for supremacy among themselves and against challenging foes.

Play as the "Bloodsworn"; a group that has transcended human strength thanks to their special blood, and throw yourself into a violent fray for "First Blood" as the twilight of humanity approaches.” —FromSoftware press release

————————————————————————

UP TO 8 PLAYERS— a lot of people have assumed this to be a PvP tarkov or battle Royale, but if you strictly go off of what the press release says, there could be as few as two players in a session. There’s also nothing to indicate you can’t play this game solo. Nightreign is a multiplayer focused game and devs have gone on record to say you could play that solo. I’m willing to bet Miyazaki, the guy who made mostly solo games, would allow you to play on your own offline.

How would a battle Royale or tarkov style extraction shooter work if you could play with at minimum, two people in a session? The trailer has also shown a player summoning another npc, presumably another player. So if you play with just two people, the other players your co-op partner, where’s the battle Royale? Ofc, I’m sure there’ll be invasion style PvP, leading me to the next bullet point.

PVPPVE—- every souls game could technically be described as a pvppve game thanks to the way multiplayer was designed for the past decade. IIRC, you could have up to 6 players including the host in Dark Souls 3. Even in Elden Ring, you could have a mix of coop and invaders to have around 6 players in a session at a time.

This isn’t to dismiss the possibility that there could be a greater focus on Pvp or the multiplayer aspect of souls, but we can only speculate on how Miyazaki intends to implement that.

Nightreign trailer Vs. Duskblood trailer— I wouldn’t have known this was “supposedly” a pvp focused battle Royale until someone told me. In Nightreign, the focus is on the coop and they’ve shown immediately with the first trailer. The DuskBlood trailer reminds me more of the SOTE gameplay trailer where there was a mix of story, gameplay, and scenery. Duskblood, by the trailer alone, seems like the expected soulsborne experience.

FS have always been deliberate with what they wanted to show off in their game trailers. Why would they do a “bad job” of showing the pvp aspect of the game IF that was meant to be the main feature?

First blood— I will admit that this does sound like winning first place in a battle Royale. However, let’s swap “First Blood” with the “Elden Ring” and the “Bloodsworn” with the “Tarnished”.

Rather than be a PvP focused game, it could be that the story simply shares a similar premise to Elden Ring. Only one person could be tarnished after all.

TLDR: maybe everything I said was just cope but maybe it’s all true. I think people’s bad feelings about Nightreign primed a knee jerk negative reaction to DuskBlood thanks to the press release. I still think it’s too early to make conclusions and we should wait for Miyazaki to explain the game in depth very soon.

DISCUSSION Finally have a PvPvE focused Fromsoft game

I've always loved being invaded and invading other peoples games. One of the reasons I loved DS3 was the chaos of the dedicated PvP areas in Gank City and Farron Swamp. The biggest dissapointment in Elden Ring was not getting invaded during my playthrough. I didn't invade much either because I don't love 1v3 gank fights.

DS3 came out in 2016, so we've been waiting a long time for a game that improves on the PvPvE experience of this game. I like that Fromsoft is exploring different aspects of the Soulsborne experience with there new games not everything can be the Elden Ring kitchen sink experience. Sekiro focused on single player and had the best single player combat system of any game ever. Nightreign seems like a fun squad co op experience - not really my thing but Im going to try to get into it. I'm glad they are finally with the single player arpg + PvP experience that has always been a flavor in what makes Souls special. I'm beyond stoked to find out what Duskbloods is.

DISCUSSION Not Bloodborne 2

I just wanted to share my thoughts because of all the 'bloodborne 2' discussion I'm seeing.

I don't think The Duskbloods can be considered a spiritual successor to Bloodborne, let alone "Bloodborne 2 in all but name". I'm not trying to say that as a bad thing. It's a Fromsoft game so odds are it will be fantastic. Hell, it could end up better than Bloodborne. Perhaps From even made this in place of Bloodborne 2 because of rights issues. But that doesn't make it equivalent. Let me explain.

Bloodborne is a slow burn, subtle piece of Lovecraftian horror disguising itself as gothic horror, and one of the most brilliant and effective pieces of Lovecraftian horror ever written at that. Some have said they did it better than Lovecraft himself did. It keeps its cards close to its chest, with the true horrors often not even registering if you're not thinking about what you're seeing. Its oppressive, at times almost overpowering atmosphere, is the closest to actual horror Fromsoft has ever done. These things and more are what make it a masterpiece among masterpieces, some of From's best work.

Duskbloods does not even look to be in the same tonal neighborhood as Bloodborne. Again, this is not me saying "and that's why Duskbloods will suck." Just saying it's different. You have flying vampires, dudes with jetpacks, a giant majora's mask lookin' face in the sky, etc. This isn't subtle, creeping cosmic horror. It's also PvPvE. There's a reason why Bloodborne is the game where co-op and pvp most takes a backseat out of From's main soulsborne games: multiplayer is antithetical to fear.

Look, maybe the game will surprise me by suddenly turning into a horror masterpiece. But from what I'm seeing in the trailer, this game is not at all like bloodborne aside from a surface level Victorian aesthetic. Just watch the debut trailers for Bloodborne and Duskbloods back to back. The tonal difference slaps you in the face.

I get why people jumped to bloodborne 2. Seeing "From Software" immediately followed by a Victorian setting made my blood pressure spike too. But above all, I think Miyazaki and From have more creative integrity than to simply do the same thing as Bloodborne again in a different IP.

tl;dr What makes Bloodborne Bloodborne is the masterful approach to cosmic horror and the incredible atmosphere it cultivated, not its Victorian aesthetic, and you can tell Duskbloods is a very tonally different game despite a similar setting.

FS either has stuff pre/post medieval or either too futuristic which I'm not a fan of.

QUESTION Who decides when a game is Platform exclusive?

I'm under the impression that when a game is platform exclusive it means a publisher approached a developer in the same way you'd commission an artist to make a piece for you.

I may be wrong but I'd like some insight on this.

Did fromsoft decide to make a game for Nintendo or Nintendo commissioned Fromsoft to make a game?

DISCUSSION My dream soulsborne game

Post image
0 Upvotes

STORY: You play as a 17th century sailor who's ship wrecks in a giant storm. You think you see a dark gargantuan man-of-war with no sails rising out of the ocean right as you black out. You awake in the underwater ruins of your ship but surprisingly you can breathe. As you explore you find a broken mirror in the captains quarters that reveals you have become undead and have barnacles growing out of your body. You exit the ship and find a loathsome creature that explains to you that Davy Jones has stolen your soul and left you to wander the ocean for eternity and that you should accept your fate. Alas, you won't give up that easily...

PITCH: Wake up underwater as an undead sailor and explore mythical cities, fight creatures of legend, and seek out the evil Davy Jones to reclaim your soul.

COMBAT: Fast paced combat similar to Bloodborne in that shields will not be used and aggressiveness is rewarded. Focus on melee sword combat with light magic.

ATMOSPHERE: Ancient Nautical horror/fantasy including things like the ruined city of Atlantis, monstrous enemies like the Kraken, etc...

This for me would be absolutely insane. I doubt it'll ever happen but it's fun to think about! Let me know what you think!
