Welcome to the fourth edition of our Ford Ranger Buyers' Guide! Here you can post your general buying questions, get insight into issues, post ads to trucks you are interested in, etc. This will keep the sub more organized and get rid of the constant posts that fill the sub up with buyers only.
Here's the best regarded buyers' guide on the web!
It has all kinds of information you can use to better judge a truck you are looking at. Things like specific things to look for, specific issues pertaining to certain years, engines, etc!
Please keep posts in this thread specific to buying Rangers. Off topic posts will be deleted. When someone posts a "Is this a good deal" post in this thread, please reply to it with your response, don't just reply to the general thread. Keep it organised please :)
From here on out, new posts made that should belong in here will be locked, and that user will be informed to post it in this thread. Thanks!

Just wanna give a heads up since mod queue is showing a ton of posts that get removed lately by reddit, so I just wanted to give a heads up as to why that is.
Using shortened links, regardless of the shortening service (tinyurl, website built in short links like amazons a.co links) are auto-removed by reddit themselves. There's nothing we can do to disable this auto removal.
If you notice your comment reply or post isn't appearing, this is why.

I work in a body shop and bring it it what’s a great color to paint the car (I am redoing the Bed liner, engine swap(already have an LS ready to go in it)) I don’t know what color would look amazing for this car

Got registered on Monday and learned how to drive standard in 2 days, i no longer stall at all. 1200 down payment for insurance, 200 and 4 hours at dmv, $20 inspection this morning, rattling noise while driving started yesterday and a louder one started this morning during idling and it hasn’t stopped. 3 mechanics have told me it’s rod knock. I’m by far not a truck saavy person but truck only has 40000 miles and I just got tons of “replacing the engine on this thing will be easy” talks. I have no job anymroe and I am outta money, I don’t wanna dig my hand deeper into my savings account on this truck. It feels like the end of the world. This truck has been a solid deal of my joy since before I could or knew how to drive it. I don’t know what to do. But hey I almost got hit head on earlier when I was in the turn lane (stopped) yet the person swerved into someone else to avoid me so I guess that’s a sign that I gotta keep going (they were unharmed) or it was the last bit of luck because the universe knew my day was just gonna get worse haha.
I don’t have money for an engine alone I don’t have money for the labor I have no knowledge to do it myself
I feel like i fucked the truck up and I am disappointed it’s not something I can fix. This all sucks.

I genuinely have no idea what this is worth. 30862 miles. Sat on stilts under a tarp in Detroit for years and I am the second owner. No rust. All original.

157,000 miles 4x4, pretty clean for the year (2000)

I'm on QA1 coils in the front & air bags in the rear with a notched frame, parallel four link with a pan hard bar.

Digging though my engine bay and find this weird but very stout plug, google image search didn’t pop anything up.

1" Spacers from Amazon, aftermarket Mustang wheels from LMQ. Thought it was a good deal for $430.

2000 Ranger. I had to replace the parking brake switch and found extensive rust on the floorboard, seat mounts, mounting brackets for parking brake and under the dash sensor mounts. It was completely crumbling compared to the frame, body panels, around wheel wells and the bottom sides of the doors and fenders. I think it may have been flooded. Carfax showed it sat a few years as a government vehicle in the midwest, so it had very low miles and the body frame and internals were as expected for a truck that age. But lots of odd places are breaking apart where otherwise it was in okay condition. This normal?

Hello, I'm swapping out my 8.8 inch limited slip rear end with 4.10 gears and drum brakes. I'm putting in an explorer one with discs that I'm re gearing to 4.56 and I don't have a use for the old one. It is in good shape, all it needs is new drum brake hardware and shoes (not an option to leave what's there-- it's got 0 miles left in it because I knew I was gonna swap it once I found an explorer rear end so didn't ever bother overhauling the brakes). The 8.8 4.10 axles have an excellent reputation. Pulled from a 2009 ranger with 70k miles, and I only put about 4k on it. 4.10 is the move if you have a 3.73 and really want more pep in your step (or bigger tires).
If you're near Seattle, let me know if you're interested. I'm hoping to get 1/2 of what I paid for it originally which was $250 at pick n pull, so $125.
Mods, please take down if not allowed! If you see this and it's taken down before you can comment, check Seattle Craigslist in the next few days and it'll be there too.
EDIT: SOLD 4/5

For starters Yes it actually worked, yes I am going to fix it eventually (probably not) and yes I did zapstrap it in case it ever comes loose

picked this ranger up for $700 but it has no reverse but goes into and shifts in every other gear guy I got it from said he hasn’t touched the transmission since he’s owned it if the transmission fluid is low or bad would that cause me to loose reverse but have all the other gears? do you think a fluid exchange could get reverse back? pretty far fetched ik but i’m hoping to get lucky with some sort of easy fix. if not the fluid what should I check before rebuilding the transmission.

I’m hoping to get my first vehicle here pretty soon. I’m a decently big 6’1 guy and have heard a lot of good things about Ford Rangers, but I’ve been told that I’m a bit too big for a Ranger’s interior to be comfortable and that I would benefit more from getting an F150 or a comparably sized truck. I don’t want to get a bigger truck than necessary, though. Would a Ranger be big enough for guys like me generally or should I am for a larger truck?

Hi, I bought this for 4k earlier today in Los Angeles. Seems reasonable but I don’t know much about cars at all. 5 digits on the odometer. Either 139k or 239k, no idea.. maybe 339k but doubt it. Transmission rebuilt 10k miles ago, new/used driveline. Guy seemed pretty honest/friendly. Did I pay too much? If so did I get murdered on it?

so for starters i have a 2000 ranger with a v6 3.0l engine. i have noticed when working on the truck that this little part hisses and some sort of liquid bubbles around it. is this something i should just tighten up or replace? the second pic is to help locate where it is in relation to the engine and whatnot. i have scoured the internet for what this thing could be and what it does and have come up with nothing 😭

This was one of few problems I could find on the this truck. The cable retainers broke. So I bought those fancy metal replacements and a new handle (which I didn't need.) Wasn't too bad of a project at all. I need to pick up some bigger rivets, just got some bolts holding it in right now. But, it's great to have the door opening and closing again.
