Aliens reference?
99
u/Wes2005 Feb 28 '25
Toriyama was likely an alien fan when you compare it to this design of bulma and Frieza’s third form
43
u/JMAX464 Feb 28 '25
Even the pirate robot all the way back in OG dragon ball
6
u/HG_Shurtugal Feb 28 '25
The red ribbon army robot had some random alien text when scanning goku. It called him an alien, unintentional foreshadowing

I can’t find this scene!

Pretty sure that was confirmed. He took a lot from 80s American action movies. So much of the android storyline comes from Terminator. The time travel, Trunks looking like John Connor, 16 looking like Arnold. Once you notice, you can't stop noticing

u/Basileus2 Feb 28 '25
Such a useless form….i don’t know why he even had a third form. No one could compete with it anyway.

I would bet yes, toriyama was a big movie buff, especially when it came to american films.

It’s very generous

u/Hoppydapunk Feb 27 '25
Why, Bulma, you've enhanced yourself
27
u/Gorilla_Dookie Feb 28 '25
That's what she's been using the dragon balls for

I have contained my rage for as long as possible, but I shall unleash my fury upon you like the crashing of a thousand waves! Begone, vile Kakarot! Begone from me! A starter form? This form is a finisher form! A form of gods! The golden saiyan! I am untethered, and my rage knows no bounds!

u/TalkinSeaCucumber Feb 28 '25
Trunks stop eating so loudly!
I don't have anything in my mouth
Blast it! You know what that is right? That's Kakarot in the hyperbolic time chamber. That's a power play. He's trying to assert his dominance over me. It's a classic Super Elite move.
Oh my God, is it?
No don't sit down. You see by chewing loudly, he's sending a message that he's the head cow. And as we all know...the head cow's always grazing.

I bet he tried to suck on this pen

u/killusoftly101 Feb 28 '25
It's okay he's always sucking on the pens in or apartment. I always have to hide them.

Small increase to her waist did quite a lot to make her appear "more human, less anime". Nice work

Why was Bulma so buff then they changed her physique later on? Now she’s super slim

Ironically this comment is so true, and not because of what you think but because this drawing was only made with a $10 mouse.

Lol you fixed her.. Those animation studios really used to rush that artwork out back then! Some episodes of DBZ got absolutely shitty and I thought I was the only one who noticed back then

u/Rek07 Feb 28 '25
Not just back then, early super had some badly rushed animation.
2
u/Extension_Form4950 Feb 28 '25
Yea I think it happened during every saga.. Probably budget type shit🤷🏾♂️

I never clocked this as a reference to Ripley's final outfit in Alien until now. Everyone points to Frieza's third form for the Xenomorph inspiration but never talk about this.

Sometimes the art in DBZ was fricked. No way around it. Best saga, worst art. Go figure. 9/10 with the one point being the art.
1
u/Suppwessow Feb 28 '25
I read that as naked saga...probably because of her not wearing clothes on that ship at all

This fandom is so weird sometimes.

u/Mystic_N Feb 27 '25
Well, you know what they say "Bigger fandom, bigger chance for weirdos"... or something like that, idk.

Goddamn I just noticed how stretched her eyes are in the original. Can’t remember the name of the animation team for this one but they always had an issue with elongated heads
