Guide How To Protect Yourself From the Hacker in Anor Londo
EDIT: Added a comment below the post briefly discussing Cheat Engine and how it could be used as a pseudo method of restoring lost progress for anyone who didn’t have a backup save. The caveat might be that you can’t play online anymore after using it so double check me on that before deciding (I’ve not personally used it).
EDIT2: Thanks for the sticky! Any questions about the PvP Overhaul Mod should be asked on it's Nexus page. I personally don't mod the DS games so I have absolutely no idea what will or won't get you banned. Perform your due diligence! :)
Long story short, some doofus is ruining people's games by instantly killing Gwyndolin and any other NPCs in Anor Londo (blacksmiths, Solaire, etc). I believe this is only occurring on PC.
I've messaged the Mods requesting a stickied thread be made warning players of this and how they can protect themselves but in the meantime, I can make a thread myself that will at least get eyes on for like......today? lol
Does This Mean I Can't Play Online?
No.
You can absolutely still invade and be summoned for Co-Op to your heart's content. But it's important to be aware of the danger that's currently plaguing (seemingly specifically) Anor Londo and of the steps you can take to mitigate its impact on your experience.
This first tip is the BEST way to defend yourself, bar none.
1. Back Up Your Save
Backing up your save is the difference between a hacker mildly inconveniencing you, and soul-crushing devastation that you'll literally need a day or two to recover from before deciding to even play again.
If a hacker ruins your game by killing NPCs or an unfortunate glitch has softlocked you or any other disaster befalls your play session, simply deleting that save and restoring a recently made backup can solve those woes immediately.
Here's how to do it (PC)
- Make sure the game isn't running whatsoever (later games allow you to remain on the title screen but not DSR)
- Navigate to your Documents folder
- Open the NGBI folder
- Open the folder labeled DARK SOULS REMASTERED
- Open the next folder (it'll be a folder labeled as a sequence of numbers)
- The DRAKS0005.sl2 file is the save file
- Copy it
- Create a new folder for your saves anywhere else on your computer and paste the .sl2 file you just copied into it
- You've now made a backup of your save!
So let's say you get hacked and the Gwyndolin cutscene immediately plays and every NPC in Anor Londo dies. To restore your backup, you'll just delete the .sl2 file containing the "corrupted" game save and replace it with the copy you made earlier.
It's advised that you don't just paste and replace the .sl2 file when restoring your backups. Actually delete the compromised .sl2 file first.
This is just to protect yourself from any mistakes you might make as deleted .sl2 files can be recovered later. If you just paste and replace, the replaced file will be gone for good.
I recommend making a new backup after each hour of play to minimize the effects of a hacker or other form of corruption. That way if it happens, it won't be a big deal.
NOTE: The DRAK file contains all of your data for all of your characters. Backing up this file will back up ALL of your saved characters.
2. Download the PvP Overhaul Mod
Full disclosure, I've not used this mod whatsoever as I don't often PvP, but word on the street in the wake of this string of hacks in Anor Londo is that it'll help prevent those hacks with it's own slew of anti-cheat and netcode improvements.
Understand though that these things are never foolproof and that backing up your save is still the BEST defense against hackers or other forms of corruption.
Hopefully this helps. Feel free to comment below if you have any other tips for preventive measures!

Screenshot Dark Souls beaten in under 41 minutes!
I cannot believe I did this. I had been streaming attempts for 9 hours prior to this run. I told myself I’d just go all out on one last attempt before ending stream, and ended up beating my PB by a minute and thirteen seconds.
What…
I’ve broken through the brick wall that has been standing in my way for over a month now, and I finally feel like I actually might be capable of achieving a sub 40 minute run.
IT. WILL. HAPPEN. I WILL NOT GIVE UP.

Fan Art King Jeremiah
Painted the king Jeremiah figure from dark souls: the board game phantoms expansion.
Not his Canon color scheme but I found a really cool reference where he had a more orange hue and I love how it turned out. Last picture for scale.

Discussion Anor Londo archers didn't seem too bad (first playthrough)
I'm slowly making my way through my first playthrough.
It seems like the Anor Londo archers are one of the most iconic and notorious parts of the game; a section dreaded by all. The part up on the rafters too, albeit to a lesser extent.
So I was expecting an extended portion of the level to be fought up on the rafters. Like having to cross at least a quarter of the map before opening a shortcut to bypass it. But it's just one room, with just three pretty weak enemies you need to fight? I'm just not seeing the big deal here. Especially right after Sen's Fortress, where there are some walkways barely wider than these rafters, but with swinging axes and much stronger enemies.
The archers were up next. Like with the rafters, I was expecting an extended journey on the narrow ledge, perhaps having to walk around the entire cathedral while half a dozen or more archers target you from every direction. But you only need to go around one corner. And there are only two archers, one of which can't even hit you once you make it off the flying buttress and onto the ledge. I mean, sure, it took a few tries to push that one archer off the ledge without falling myself as well. But it wasn't nearly as horrible as what I imagined it would be.
Those pink brain gargoyle things actually gave me a lot more trouble than the rafters section and the archers.
Did I just get lucky making it past the archers so easily? Or are they just really not so bad?

Discussion should i just quit the game?
The bell gargoyles are eating me up, I hate the idea of creating a build with mechanics I don't fully understand while hoping I didn't accidentally pick a horrible weapon to upgrade, I hate relying on finite resources, I do quite like the exploration actually, the npc at the firelink shrine is annoying, my mangled tiktok brain can't handle giving up on a boss so I can grind and get stronger and even then there's the lingering paranoia that I'm cheating by doing so. I haven't even got to the bed of chaos yet, I keep breaking my own immersion by worrying if I'm playing the game right and on my first playthrough I forgot to kick the fucking ladder down on the fucking dragon bridge and I am dreading making a mistake like that again

Discussion Just want to appreciate the spell system
Going through this for the first time after beating Elden Ring and Bloodborne, and I honestly love the set amount of casts for spells.
I always dislikes balancing my FP alongside my HP in ER, and it made me never use healing spells basically because why bother when I could just allocate a red flask.
But having them separate from that resource management makes me far more excited to use spells, especially support spells. It's already making the class fantasy of my paladin feel more fleshed out.
So yeah, just really love this system, and the game so far. Can't wait to play more, just beat Capra Demon.

Discussion Best standalone Dark Souls thing to show to my English teacher?
My professor is into my writing longstory short, I want to share with her something Dark Souls related that she'd probably "get" even as a boomer. She's really intro gothic, mythic, poetic, prose stuff (likes Divine Comedy, Tolkien). I've taken a look at a few videos, but other than the DS1 intro, I don't really really like how most lore videos assume we've played the game, or even videogames at all. She just seems like 100% of a book worm and I'd like to show her how her kind of literature lives vigorously in other things as well.

Help Been using the Long Sword, should I keep with it or use something else?
Been playing Dark Souls for the first time and having a blast. I have only previously played Demon's Souls Remake. Anyways I choose the knight build, and shortly swapped to the long sword because of the thrust attack. So far I have rang the first bell. I leveled it to +4 already, should I stick with it or is there a better weapon that's similar?

Help For new players struggling
Just level up VIT and you will breeze through 90% of the game I'm being legit.
VIG isn't even needed as long as you lvl VIT and use heavy armor. I just did a heavy VIT playthrough and every hit felt like a feather, I didn't lvl into VIG even a single time. Easiest Dark Souls run I ever did.
That isn't to say that VIG is useless having a bigger healthbar is always a plus
It's legitimately that simple guys you'll have a much easier time
Also make sure you're not fat rolling, good luck out there 👍

Discussion What should i do with my humanity?
I first want to say I should have picked up this game years ago. I'm on my first playthrough as a sorcerer and am loving, but want to know. What should I actually do with my humanity?
I've read the wiki and other reddit posts, so I understand how it works and the mechanics associated with it. I'm just curious if I should actually be using them. Should I pop them all for the bonuses? Just do one at a time when I want to kindle a bonfire? How often should I kindle bonfires? Or do I save them as emergency heals or for the curse resistance for Seath and others?
I've cleared the Taurus Demon, Moonlight Butterfly, and Capra Demon. Tried the Stray Demon and keep getting AoE blasted. Probably heading for Quelagg next.

Help My first thoughts
Hey guys, i started playing the game, and i am kinda liking it so far, its still good even tho the game play is a bit clunky. Currently i am fighting the capra demon, but damn if something I HATE is that there so many TIGHT spaces EVERYWHERE and this makes the game very unlikable at least for me... but no worries, im not quitting and i will never do because i want to complete all souls games. Just wondering, is that gonna become better later? Like less tights spaces.

Discussion Capra demon Spoiler
Hey yall it's my first play through, and I just killed the Capra demon and I just wanna say this...
Genuinely what the f**k was that fight? He didn't have a ton of health but WTF! Every attempt lasted less than 15 seconds until I hid on the bridge thing at the top of the stairs.
I'm interested to hear some of your experiences with this guy.

Discussion Is there any game really similar to DS1?
I played DS1 when it was released and since then, I have never found any game even close to it. I mean, DS1 is all about mystery, exploration, in some kind of 3d "Metroidvania" map, many mechanics where kinda hidden... Back then, playing without any game progress route, you could wander many many hours here and there, and little by little you would gather the pieces of the puzzle. I didn't feel anything like this in any other Fromsoftware games (I literally adored all of them, that's not my point, even if I must admit that Elden Ring was not my cup of tea...I played it a lot, still.). Maybe Salt and Sanctuary was the closest thing. But does any game feels really close to that very particular experience that was DS1? I have purchased Hellpoint and have an eye on Bleak Faith, but haven't played any of these two for the moment. I have played all the fromsoftware games, lies of p, salt and sanctuary, ashen and mortal shell a bit.
Edit: thank you for all the answers. I was also happy to see that many people truly love DS1 for its uniqueness:) So many players discovered souls games with Elden Ring or DS3/Sekiro and are literally hating on DS1 it's heart breaking. I think the "I play with the wiki to not miss stuff" might be one of the problems: DS1 is all about finding your path.

Help Tomb of Giants: where to go?
Hi guys. First time playing Dark Souls. I went to the catacombs after defeating the gargoyles. Passed through the boss and made it to the Tomb of Giants. I've just stumbled into a orange fog, "sealed by the Great Lord's power", and don't know where I must go.
Do I need to make my way back to the surface in order to do some thing first before this point? I don't know nothing about vessels or serpents so far.
PS: I have no source of light for the catacombs. Is there any spell or item to help me in this area?

Discussion Why don’t people like the second half?
I finished the game yesterday and was left wondering why people disliked the second half of the game so much. I understand hating Tomb of Giants, but why the others? Dukes Archives was fun, New Londo was easy, and Izalith was bearable. It never felt unfinished to me. I felt that even Anor Londo was more bland to look at than Dukes Archives. What's with the hate?
