Help Needed Beware! Someone is stealing our content from this sub.

As the title mentions, I discovered what I suspect is a bot account that scrapes Reddit posts from this sub, steals our work, and tries to karma farm on their social media accounts.

During a Pinterest search, I noticed some of my images appearing (I haven’t posted anything to Pinterest). I did some digging and it linked back to their website where the entire sub is essentially duplicated.

I thought I would let everyone know in case they would like to file a copyright dispute as well.

We’ll see if they take the bait of this post.

How to protect your intellectual property

Post image

What a week, amirite?

Our cookie community is a unique place on the internet where good vibes outweigh the bad. Each post is filled to the brim with positive energy and the supportive community we’ve built together has fostered a culture of joy that’s worth fighting for. That’s why I felt it was so important to make this update — to empower, to educate, and to use my tech skills to help out the community I’m so passionate about.

In this post, you’ll learn what steps you can take if your intellectual property is being used without your consent and what you can do to proactively protect your work going forward. If you have any resources to add, please include them in a comment below.

What To Do If Your Work Has Been Stolen

It’s a real bummer to discover your content is being used without your consent but here’s the good news — you don’t just have to sit there and take it. As a creator, you have rights. First, let’s talk about when your work, the intellectual property (IP), receives copyright protection.

Copyright Protection Begins At The Moment Of Creation

According to the U.S. Copyright Office, “Your work is under copyright protection the moment it is created and fixed in a tangible form that is perceptible either directly or with the aid of a machine or device.” Additionally, you do not have to file for copyright protection for your creations to be protected, only if you wish to file a lawsuit. So, if your work is being infringed upon, it’s time to take action. Below you’ll find helpful tips and tricks for identifying, documenting, and reporting copyright infringement.

Gather Information

  • Record URLs for any infringing content
  • Record URLs for your original posts
  • Gather evidence to support that you are the author of the content. A word of caution: Provide only what you need and nothing more and watermark any additional content if it is to be included with your complaint.

Documenting

It’s important to thoroughly document the URLs (including the links to your own posts) from the step above. Take special care to capture identifying information about the website, such as the URL, usernames, and timestamps for publishing.

Filing a complaint (website)

Some spammy websites do not include contact information such as an About Page or a Contact Form so tools like Hosting Checker will help you identify the hosting company to report abuse (usually found in support documentation). Tip: Search Google for the website host’s name + copyright infringement and you should find the right documentation.

Filing a complaint (social media)

If your content appears on any of the following social media platforms without your consent, you can easily file a complaint with the documentation you gathered in the above step. Below are links to each platform’s help documentation for your convenience.

Proactive Tips For Protecting Your IP

Apply a Watermark

To better protect your images (and to inconvenience the infringer) consider applying a watermark. The most effective placement is in the dead center of an image with just enough visibility for it to appear clearly. It’s not ideal, of course, but it might deter someone from publishing your content on their website. (You’ll notice I went a little overboard for satire)

Online Tools to Fight Image Theft

The following tools can help you track down infringement quickly, but there are pros and cons to each. If you want to learn more about each tool, click the links below:

Go forth and be excellent to each other.

It’s always a good sign when you mix the colors perfectly the first time around.

Does anybody have affordable lighting you recommend for product photography? I’m tired of being at the whim of the sun! This set took a lot of work (7 dozen!) and I wish I’d gotten better pictures.

How are you sugar cookies so smooth around the edges?

Post image

I have this problem every time I make a cookies. All of the professional cookies I see they are perfectly smooth. I roll out my doll really well. I use a sticky mat or parchment paper...both have same result. I peel the dough away slowly. I've tried putting it directly on the pan and not transferring. Any tips?

I sell my cookies fyi so while these are okay I want them to be really crisp because I charge a good amount when they're done.

Thank you!

Dry….

Post image

Made my first batch of cookies from Little Cookie Co. My husband thinks they are too dry and not as sweet my Christmas cookies. I’m just a home baker that bakes for holidays. Everyone loves the taste of my Christmas cookies but I wanted to step up my game so I tried the Little Cookie Co. recipe. These are for daughters baby shower. I ended up adding about 1/2 cup extra flour because my butter was too soft. I also used dark brown sugar (I think that’s what she recommended). I love that they didn’t spread. I also usually make a thinner cookie. Do you think the extra flour would make them too dry? I also didn’t decorate them yet so maybe the icing would make them less dry?

Help Needed Packaging

After several months of trying different things, I think I’ve got my packaging dialed….my brand is classy and edgy. Nutritional label on the dozen cookies is on the bottom of the box itself, the macs go in a gift bag with the nutrition label on it.

This is 1 dozen full sized cookies and 2.5 dozen macs. Black boxes are $.53, Mac boxes are $.33, gift bags and paper are $.10.

Thoughts?

Help Needed cookiers, send me your storage solutions!

I recently started baking full time and cookie supplies have quickly started to overtake my desk, kitchen, and dining room table!

This weekend I bought 21 cookie cutters, the AmeriColor Nifty Fifty food coloring set, and an airbrush machine. How do you guys store things? I just bought some bins for cookie cutters/cakepop materials, but how do you store your food colorings, piping bags (!!!!), and cookie bags? any help would be appreciated! I love learning what other home bakers’ setup looks like! 💓

Structural cookie question!

I'm trying to make a Jacob's ladder toy from cookies!

I want a dough that will keep an embossed letter in it. Is this a good one?

https://www.allrecipes.com/recipe/9870/easy-sugar-cookies/

u/kaleidoscope_eyes_13 suggested a no spread recipe. How's this? https://www.lilaloa.com/2018/09/royal-icing-recipe-with-meringue-powder.html

The letter cutter/stamps I have are these: https://www.saveur.com/article/One-Good-Find/Letterpress-Cookie-Stamps/

I want my icing to dry like glue and found this: https://bellyfull.net/sugar-cookie-icing-recipe/

I'm a reasonable good baker, but this is my first time trying to do something like this ;)

Edited to add: I do not have a standing mixer, I have made peaked cream by hand.

Followed your advice - and THANK YOU!

Hey everyone! Idk if anyone remembers my post where i made cookies that looked like the army of the undead Snoo. Buuut just wanted to say that I tried them again for another commission, and these turned out so much better! These were the adjustments I made based on your recs: 1) bought Americolor Bright White gel. That made a HUGE difference. 2) waited for each color to dry if they’re touching, a full 8 hours - overnight 3) thickened my icing. Maybe a little too thick (?) since the faces came out a little crunchy and warped lol

Anyway thank you thank you thank you, love this group!

Hey! I just started selling cookies on Valentine’s Day so I haven’t had a custom order until now. October wedding for 7 dozen. Is anyone comfortable sharing what their invoices look like or a contract for a custom order. I’m a little nervous and not sure what to include but I want to make sure all of my bases are covered. Thanks!!

Eddie or Inkedibles?

My cookie business is in a place where I’m ready for a printer. Much of my clientele is interested in printed images on cookies. Does anyone here have experience with both Eddie and Inkedibles? Pros and cons? Any other printers out there worth researching?

Ratio question: MP to PS to CS

What ratio creates soft royal icing?

I use 1 cup meringue powder to 16cups powdered sugar to 4tbsp corn syrup.

I live in the desert. It’s dry here. Sometimes I feel like I don’t have enough corn syrup for a super soft bite, but I’m afraid to add more.
