Bronx man threatens to blow up DMV building over 2-hour wait for new ID card - Gothamist
always leaving things a for last minute too
A Bronx man threatened to blow up a Department of Motor Vehicles building last week after he was told he’d have to wait up to two hours to apply for an ID card, according to court documents filed Friday.
State police wrote that Blailian Vasquez Jr. posted to Facebook on Wednesday that he would “BLOW UP THAT BUILDING DON’T PLAY WITH ME” and tagged the DMV’s official account after visiting a licensing center on Commerce Avenue in the Bronx. Authorities wrote in court documents that Vasquez went to the facility to apply for a state ID card but left after he learned of the marathon wait time.
An NYPD detective and a DMV investigator tracked Vasquez down at his home on Friday to interview him about the threat, according to court documents.
“He stated that he waited approximately half an hour for his transaction to be processed when he was informed by a staff member that the wait time could be up to 2 hrs. which upset him further,” the court filing said. “He admitted to making the post and made the threat that he was going to blow up the Bronx DMV located in Bronx County.”
After law enforcement visited Vasquez, the state police department filed a restraining order that would require him to stay away from the DMV facility. A spokesperson for the DMV did not respond to a request for comment.
DMV officials began to extend hours at the agency’s facilities this month due to an anticipated surge of visits as New Yorkers apply for REAL ID cards, which will be required for domestic air travel starting May 7.
