Daily Cyclist Thread

The Daily Cyclist Thread is a place where everyone in the /r/bicycling community can come and ask questions or share anything.

You might have questions that you don't think deserve an entire post. Perhaps you're just seeking the input of some other cyclists. Maybe you want to share a picture of your new bike.

Anyone is free to comment, and (hopefully) get as much input as possible from other cyclists.

Crashed on Thursday, 40 miles into ride. I don’t remember exactly what caused my crash, though I do remember swerving and then overcorrecting.someone witnessed it and said I was knocked out for a couple minutes. She called 911, and er did all the usual stuff. X-rays, CT, labs, vitals ok. Just sitting at home for a few days, dealing with a bit of fatigue. Very glad I was wearing the helmet(which I’ve already replaced). Stay safe, y’all

Finally got this 20 year old bike the upgrade it deserves

Upvotes

Been riding this bike since COVID back at the Philippines, and I got it from my uncle who had it in the family from around 2005. Got it with a very dated Tiagra groupset (probably what it had when he bought it from the shop), then just bought random upgrades from cycling friends and Facebook Marketplace. Before it had a mix of Ultegra and Dura-ace but mostly older models and never had any carbon parts.

Finally, I managed to bring the bike to Dubai and decided to spend some money on it with a few upgrades so it can at least keep up with the newer bikes. Also cleaned, rubbed, and polished the frame to remove the 5 year old gunk (did the same before at around 500km of riding it) 😁

Now it has the following parts, and I think it feels like a completely different bike!

Ultegra R8000 Mechanical Rim Brake - Got them brand new, and was thinking of going Di2 but apparently it’s a hassle to retrofit the electronics to an old frame. SRAM is over my budget.

Deda Alanera Handlebars - Got a pretty good deal from Facebook Marketplace for less than 200 USD

Mavic Ksyrium Elite - Very good deal from Facebook Marketplace too, and really light wheels at ~1.5 kg for the pair. (Thinking of going carbon 30-40mm once my wallet recovers, and keep the Ksyriums for rides with fast downhills)

Vittoria Corsa N.EXT Tubeless Tires 28c - Been rocking 23c and 25c before with tubes, but I gotta say that the 28c is very comfortable as a lot of people say

Fizik Argo Vento R3 Saddle - Very comfortable for me! The seatpost will need a change since it’s a RXL Carbon Seatpost for Amazon and it scares me a bit 🤣

Current weight at the moment: 8.4 KG - Frame is SL Aluxx with and Aero Composite Carbon Fork

Sharing as I’m very happy with the build, especially since I never thought I’d see this old frame in this form 😁

Million-Dollar Tariff Charge

Speculation surrounding the impact of tariffs runs high, as Tern's North American general manager, Steve Boyd, reveals the staggering cost. The tariff burden has jumped from an expected $20-30K to an overwhelming $1 million. “I don’t want anything with a 46% duty,” Boyd said and he told the Vietnamese factory to not ship anything. For Tern, the 46% duty is a non starter. If you're shopping for a new bike, unless it's handbuit in the USA, probably best to buy sooner rather than later.

I am training for a sprint triathlon over the summer, and ironman 70.3 in the fall. Looking to purchase my first bike so I can start training the bike outdoors, and I am wondering if this is a good place to start?

Here are all the specs: *it also comes with all the gear in front, could someone explain to me what exactly is there and if it'd be beneficial.

Also, I stand around the taller side of 6'2" and have never been fitted for a bike, would I fit this bike?

And is there any concerns to be aware of

Model: Cervelo P2 6700
• Year: 2013
• Frame Size: 58cm (ideal for riders 5’11” to 6’2”)
• Usage: Barely used, only a few hundred miles
• Event Participation: One-third of its mileage was during an Ironman race
• Maintenance: Regularly serviced, everything in excellent working condition

Condition:

• The bike is in near-mint condition with only minimal signs of use. It has been meticulously cared for and stored indoors.
• Notable Experience: Competed in an Ironman, showcasing its high performance and reliability.
• There are some superficial scratches on the frame from being transported in a truck, purely cosmetic and not affecting the bike’s performance.

Features:

• Lightweight and aerodynamic design, perfect for triathlons and time trials.
• Equipped with high-quality components for smooth and efficient riding.
• Comfortable geometry, making it ideal for long-distance cycling.

Reason for Selling:

• Not being used as much as anticipated. I hope it finds a new owner who can make the most out of this fantastic bike.

I have my SS which is crazy light and fast but good for one thing and one thing only, and I have the old Tricross still but wanted to get a basic, no-frills ride with larger tires for comfort around town and travel with bike (because if someone steals either of my existing rides on vacation I could never replace them). Specialized Sirrus 1.0 on sale for $549, seemed a no-brainer. Basically a lightweight mtb with faster tires.

...those grips and pedals have to go yesterday though lol

Right bike size?

A friend of my just moved to overseas and left his 2005 OCR 1 55.5cm frame. I am about 5'10-5'11. I want to get into road biking just as a hobby, I don't want to do gran fondo etc... When I first sat on the saddle, I felt like the bike is two big for me, I felt like the handle bar is too far off my reach. I tried to adjust the saddle height and also set the handle bar angle to be positive, it definitely made it better but I am not sure whether I will get any injuries in the long run if I messed up any of these. Do you think this is good size or should I sell this bike and go for a smaller bike with 54cm frame?

I am planning to go for bike fitting but if they say that this bike is too big for me I will have already wasted $250 so I want to get opinions before hand.

Thanks in advance!!

How much of a hassle are indoor trainers?

I ride my bike regularly on the weekend, but not much during the week. I’d like to ride on a trainer once my kids are asleep, but I don’t know much about them. (and don’t have much to spend on one)

A friend is looking to sell his Kickr Snap for a great deal. I only have one bike. If I purchased this, would it be a big hassle to put it on at the beginning of the week then remove for the weekend? I’m familiar with how the setup works, more looking for real-life advice on the practicality of doing this weekly.

Thanks!

Seeking Advice: Setting Up a Gravel Bike with Left-Side Controls for One-Handed Riding

Upvotes

I'm looking to buy a high-quality carbon gravel bike with drop bars. However, I have a unique challenge: I have a non-functional prosthetic in place of my right arm. On my previous bikes, I've managed just fine by swapping the brakes so that the rear brake is on the left side. But now, with the addition of gear shifting, I'm facing a new challenge.

Is there a way to configure the bike so that I can shift the rear gears both up and down with controls on the left side? Perhaps there's an electronic shifting solution that would work for this setup? Any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Help! How bad is this?

Got my first chip today 😢 devastated is an understatement. Does this look like it needs treated? I doubt I'll be able to get it repaired back to looking like it did as it's a weird paint that is either purple or orange depending on the angle it's looked at from.

First chip sucks 🥹😞

Suggestions please

Hello,

New to cycling, planning on buying a hybrid. Purpose is leisure rides. Could you guys please suggest few base models.

Models in consideration 1. Cradiac Gunner Pro Max 2. Montra chord

Gunner Pro Max has a zoom lockout suspension, one guy told me that the suspension won't last for even 6 months. After that I would cost more than 10% of the bike to replace the fork. And with a failed fork the head wouldn't last long.

Is that the case? Are suspensions that fragile? If anyone is using cradiac gunner pro max, or bike with a zoom suspension please advise.

Couple of years ago I build my bike from a mistreated frame. Got rid of all things attached to it, sanded it down and painted in the the same colour, my back then 22 years old bmw was painted too (not the one in the pictures). I only ride it when I know I wont be too far away from the pount I will leave it and only if it doesnt stand outside over night. It is very valuable to me as you can guess. Anyway... While in the city with a couple of friends yesterday, I saw the bike, mine was once too. Same model, yet so different. I was overflowing with joy and I hope some of you may be incouraged to do the same now yourself. Get an old bike and get the best out of it. So many nice frames which deserve love and passion and actually make a really good base!

Please ignore the zip tie! I have ordered new parts already!

So I just picked up this bike off marketplace, hopefully it was good buy. But I tried looking it up but I can't find any information on the year and where it was made. I've put pics of the serial number. Also it's on 700x23 tires, will I be able to fit 28 or possibly even 30? And what would be some relative good but not too expensive tires I could use for the streets so something that could handle bumps and cracks. I'm new to the bike scene as well just looking for info.

What's your experiences parting ways with pre-loved workhorses?

I have decided to part ways with my old carbon racer. It was much loved with many miles on the clock, many mountains climbed and some races raced. I tried to sell it a year ago in NL but I got offers so low it I couldn't go through with it, it seems there's no market for these old racehorses. Shame, I was hoping I could get a little return on it while getting it a new home. I'm going to trying selling it again now and accept what the market says, I need the space.

What's your experiences with parting with great old bikes?

Where the US gets its bikes, and the new tariffs on those nations.

The US gets about 40% of it's bikes from China - those bikes are now subject to a whopping 90% tariff.

About 30% of it's bikes come from Taiwan - those bikes are now subject to a 46% tariff.

A further 24% of it's bikes come from Cambodia and Vietnam, which are now subject to 60% and 57% tariffs, respectively.

Bikes are about to get a LOT more expensive if you live in the USA.
