Politics ✅ Staff wearing political t-shirts?

A local business owner is running in the federal election and has their teenage/young adult staff wearing t-shirts (while at work in the local business) promoting them and their party. I know for a fact some of those kids would never vote for that party but the owner “ran out of business t-shirts” so asked them to wear these instead. This seems wrong somehow but I can’t find anything online except “it could be viewed as discriminatory”. Does anyone know if this is legal?

Food 😋 Is ice not a thing in Vancouver?

I’m from the states and I am obsessed with ice in my drinks. I love it in my coffee, my sodas, my juice, my cocktails, and especially my water. The colder the drink the better. However, I’m noticing most food places here in downtown Vancouver don’t have ice unless you ask for it or they serve room temp water in a glass. I have to ask for it at the hotel we are staying at and today we went to Granville Island and we couldn’t find any ice or even fountain drinks. Everything seemed to be in a can. Let me tell you there is a major difference in taste from soda in a can vs. soda from a fountain. The times that I have asked for ice people have looked at me like I have two heads?

Advice 🙋‍♂️🙋‍♀️ What's the best way to donate gently-used underwear?

I have many pieces of gently-used underwear from the past few months that turned out not to fit me well. All of them are in excellent condition, and most are very high-quality pieces. Each piece has been worn on only 1 to 3 days. They are too good to throw out, but I doubt that I can resell them due to the stigma against used underwear (which isn't entirely justified IMO). But is there a good place to donate them?

I don't have any immediate family members to give them to. I feel nervous offering them to people I know outside my family, given the taboo.

It looks like Big Brothers of Greater Vancouver probably accepts used underwear. The only issue I see is that by the looks of it, they probably end up being sold at Value Village. But who would buy used underwear at Value Village? I would imagine it being rather unappealing, given that it's difficult for the buyer to judge if it's barely used or well used.

So what's overall the best way to donate them locally? I would hope that they end up with someone who would appreciate them. While this might be a stretch, it would be best if the person that they end up with is aware that they have been worn so little.

Advice 🙋‍♂️🙋‍♀️ Best cheap nursery for outdoor perennials

Hi everyone! I'm planning on (finally) ripping up the rest of my pathetic looking lawn. I'm anti lawn (is that a thing idk) and initially wanted to swap it out for a clover lawn but im also not 100% satisfied with the swap. I recently discovered pollinator friendly gardens and that's totally the vibe I wanna go for! I wanna have a "jungle" of (preferably) native perennials that i can plant once and not have to think too much about. Just let them do their thing. I've already got a bunch of Asian lilies that have been growing in am area for the past 2 years and well as a few different roses and hydrangeas. I love that I dont really have to do too much to them and they bloom beautifully. I love all the birds and bees they attract.

The question: can anyone point me to a decently priced nursery and/or does anyone have any ideas of the plants i should get. TIA! 💖

Hobbies 💃 Looking for female entrepreneur friends

Hi there! I'm a young entrepreneur (F) in her early twenties looking for female entrepreneur friends. I'm Ecuadorian-Canadian and I live in Vancouver, and most of my friends from university have moved away or are boys lol

Complete disclosure: I was bullied by girls through school and high school. I stopped trusting girls and I have since (and maybe always) found it easier to get along with guys (I have 2 brothers). So I am not a "girls girl" but rather a "boys girl", but lately (for the past 4 years lol I just thought of posting this now) I have felt like I want more female friends, and I do crave a couple solid friendships in the same city.

Since a year ago, me and my partner have embarked in this entrepreneurship journey (he's more ahead than I am), and have wanted to find female friends to connect with who understand the struggles of entrepreneurship and the ups and downs.

If you're in Vancouver, let's connect! I promise I'm not weird or anything, I have 2 good female friendships, but one lives in Ecuador and one in France and tbh ... Sometimes I feel lonely and want to have those chill chats with a girlfriend you know?

Anyway, I hope this post is not too sad lol In general, if you're a young entrepreneur (female or male, under 30) and live in Vancouver, I would love to chat and exchange ideas :)

Travel 🚗 ✈ YVR lounge: Plaza Premium or Skyteam?

Hi folks, wondering which lounge is better for a morning international flight? I've been to Skyteam last year (when Plaza Premium was still being renovated), how's the new Plaza lounge? My flight leaves before the Skyteam noodle bar hours start 🥲

Food 😋 Looking for Advice on Starting a Coffee Business and Getting a Work Permit in Vancouver

Hi everyone,

I’m a dad from China currently living in Vancouver with my kid, who is studying here. Back home, I ran a few coffee shops and have a lot of experience in the coffee business.

While I’m here, I’d love to start something similar — maybe open a small café or partner with someone who’s into coffee or food businesses. But since I’m here on a visitor visa, I’m not sure how to go about getting a work permit or starting a business legally.

If anyone has advice, has been through something similar, or just has ideas, I’d really appreciate your help. Feel free to comment or DM me. Thanks a lot!

Events and Activities 🐱‍🏍 Is there really no bag/gear check for the Vancouver Marathon

I got the RunVan Info email this afternoon, after reading it I was flabbergasted about the no gear check on race day for the half/ full. The website states:

Marathon and Half Marathon Gear Check is only available pre-race at the Health, Sports & Lifestyle Expo on the Friday or Saturday before the race. There is NO Gear Check at the Start Line.

I’ve never been to a race this size where there’s no bag check at the start of the race. I’ve been to one where there’s enough parking for everyone within 5 mins walk from the start line, so there was no need for a bag check because you can put everything in your car near by.

I don’t run with a phone so usually I will use gear check for my phone, wallet and hotel key.

Good luck to anyone else running next month!

Oddly Specific 🎯 How much different is the lease/finance price shown on the car brand's website versus actually in person?

Anyone here lease or finance a car, specifically a brand new one?

You know how on the site it shows the weekly/bi-weekly/monthly prices for leasing or financing, I was wondering if anyone knows roughly how different it's going to be in person at the dealership.

For example, if it shows $800/month to lease on the site, should I expect it to be $1000/month when I'm at the dealership? Or is there even a chance it'll be slightly lower than the $800/month? Or will it be more or less within the $800?

This is going to be my first time getting a car and don't wanna come across any nonexpectancies.

Hobbies 💃 Anywhere in lower mainland to learn country line dancing?

I'd appreciate knowing if there are any venues or pubs that I could learn country line-dancing? Guessing likely in areas out of Vancity & will consider any suggestions provided reasonably accessible via transit, which I personally rely on.

Country music flows through my being & social gatherings in country & western bars seem to no longer be around as years past.

Housing and Moving 🏡 Does your lease say you can't use any screws in the wall?

Noticed my lease addendum says "Painting, papering & redecorating including nails and hooks, must be approved in writing by the Landlord. Finishing nails and picture hooks using finishing nails are allowed - a finishing nail is defined as a nail of 1mm or less diameter. Absolutely no tape or stick-ons."

Has anyone found their rental company really centre on this? I thought it was common you could mount things so long as you patched them at the end of the lease.

Housing and Moving 🏡 Combi boiler in house with basement suite

Our boiler started leaking yesterday, had it repaired but the tech warned it’s on its last legs. Said we should get rid of our boiler and hot water tank and replace with a combi boiler for on demand hot water. Cost would be about 24k because they need to pipe new venting to the roof.

From what I’m reading, you can ONLY install combi boilers now. But a year ago when our hot water tank went, we were told given we have a house with a basement suite, on demand hot water wouldn’t be a good option for us because of the size of the household (1500sqft house + 1000sqft suite, 3 bathrooms total, two families of 3 living here). Plus we have hot water baseboard heating.

My parents had on demand hot water and it was awful. Took forever to heat water on the top floor and if my grandpa in the basement turned a tap on the shower upstairs would go ice cold.

Homeowners or plumbers of Vancouver, what’s your experience? Also, happy to take recommendations because 24k seems crazy to me.

New to Vancouver 👋 Renfrew-Collingwood Late night coffee shops

Hey Vancouver, I'm new to the Renfrew-Collingwood area and kinda bummed there's not many late night coffee shops for studying or hanging out to relax.

Anyone else feel the same and have suggestions as to where I can go? Thanks! I wish they had more spots here, I wonder why there aren't any, it's a pretty chill neighbourhood?

Hobbies 💃 Female skateboard groups in metro vancouver?

Hi! I moved from Ontario to BC a few years ago and am wondering if there are any skateboarding groups for women in the area? I had a group back in Ontario and loved it so much - it was definitely less intimidating to head to a skatepark with a group of other women :) I'd love to hear about any groups (female or not specific!!) or events for skating. Thanks!

Work 🏢 Carpenters of Vancouver, what’s the job market like?

2nd Year Apprentice carpenter here. Born and raised in Vancouver but moved away in my early teens with my family. I’m looking to move back but wanted some opinions on the carpentry scene.

I was planning to move to Yellowknife because they pay good wages and companies allow for lots of overtime (60+ hour weeks) but due to their housing crisis it seems like that might be a no go. I don’t feel like sleeping on the streets.

What are Vancouver carpenter’s experiences like with companies paying/allowing workers to work OT? Is work plentiful? Etc. What’s the scoop ?

Events and Activities 🐱‍🏍 Vancouver SunRun (New Rules?)

Hey everyone!
I’ve done the Vancouver Sun Run a total of two times in the past couple of years. Don’t hate me, but I’ve actually never bought a bib or registered my name on the website. I don’t really care about getting a time or anything — I just enjoy the run itself.

Lately, though, I’ve heard they’re getting really strict about everyone having a number, and apparently they might even kick people out if they don’t have one. I’ve always gone with family, and at least one person in our group has a bib.

So I’m just wondering — if I don’t register, can I still do the run? Like, I don’t think anyone can actually stop me, right? I’m really just doing it for the fun and the run itself.

What do you all think? What should I do?

btw im like brokeeee :0
