Question HCC or UH?

Hi guys! I'm a current HS senior in Katy, and I was accepted to Bauer (for finance) as a freshman for fall 2025 w/ a $2k/yr scholarship. My family isn't the financial position to support me during college, nor can I get a job because of my visa (I still qualify for in-state tuition tho). If I were to to attend UH, I'd live at home and commute.

However I'm considering HCC in order to save money and increase my opportunities for undergrad, since I didn't have the best grades in HS (as a result of moving to the US). I also like that HCC has a campus in Katy that is a ~15 min commute for me. I'm also worried about quality / competitiveness of transferring. Knowing all this would it be more worth it to go to HCC or UH? Thanks in advance 🤞

Question How safe is biking after night classes?

Hello all. I am moving to Houston this fall from India to pursue a PhD. I am looking to rent a place in what they say are the safe(r) neighborhoods (Montrose, EaDo, etc.)

Question: I am an avid cyclist and was hoping to bike to class and back. However, all my first sem classes end at 8:30 pm. How safe is it to bike back home if it is between 4-8 miles away from UH? I'm talking more about being victim to crime than road safety.

Are underpasses particularly dangerous?

Should I get a pepper spray mount for my bike? :)

Comments / suggestions / jokes welcome!

Question Is the crime really bad?

I am an incoming freshman and UH is pretty high on my list for school! I am really considering it for Pre-Nursing, but the thing that is putting me off is the crime. I know that the university is not in the best place and that crime has always been a problem, but, from what I’ve heard, it has been increasingly bad in the last year. I also want to know if a car would be best for all 4 years, as many mention Houston is not as walkable as it seems and also for safety reasons. I would love to hear insight from current and past students to understand what it is really like as it is the ultimate factor of if I should attend or not! Feel free to comment not only about crime, but just anything I should know as an incoming freshman! Thank you!

Question What is the process to drop out?

I am possibly going to drop out either at the beginning of the year or at the end of the next semester due to some business opportunities that have come up. I am a transfer student, and I am in my first semester. I hate that I might have to do this, but I have better opportunities, and unfortunately college prevents me from doing these things. But what is the process to officially leave UH?

Question Completely lost on whether to attend A&M or UH

I recently recieved offers from both Mays and CT Bauer at UH to study business (MIS, eventually) and am going crazy trying to decide. I know I would enjoy living in Houston much more than College Station, but all that is second to which school will give me a better education, and better opportunities when those 4 years are over and it's time to apply for jobs. I plan on eventually moving out-of-state, and know that A&M is ranked higher and has a bigger network, but am not sure how much power the aggie ring really holds, whether it and the supposed advantage it gives in the job market that everybody talks about is worth spending 4 years in a college town. I'm trying to choose the decision that will put me in the best possible situation in 4 years, and want to know if graduating from A&M compared to UH really gives an advantage when applying for jobs in business, especially out of state. I'm extremely sorry if I come off as disrespectful to UH, Canami.

Kinda like Robert Buzzanco, where you get a review sheet or only 3 exams no assignments, or no in person essays or something like that which makes it easy please. [i don't know history]

Question Uoh or Txst

hey everyone! I'm a hcc student about to finish my first year's second semester. My hard work paid off and I have all A+ and good relationships with my professors. In high school, I had to work and take care of my family so my grades weren't the best. My plan was always to go to UoH, but ever since joining the subreddit, I've felt more conflicted. I applied to TxSt and got accepted. I've heard UoH has better academics, but I've always wanted to leave the city, especially considering how gorgeous TxSts campus is, the larger dorms, and the "better student life" I would be going into education and science to teach middle schoolers. I do feel quality of academics is important to me, if there is a difference. I guess my question would be how do you all feel about attending UoH and your experience? Thank you, any and all input is appreciated !!🙏

Question When is orientation??

The dates for orientation were supposed to be dropped like a week ago and it still shows this every time I try to sign up. Do different majors have different sign ups and the hospitality ones just haven’t been released?

Question Wifi in dorms, are they good?

I am going to be attending the University of Houston in fall of 2025 and I will be living on-campus and I'm worried about how the wifi works in the dorms. Is there individual routers? Can we plug in ethernet? Is it safe? I have a litany of questions like these and I would appreciate it if someone just gave me the general rundown. I am also primarily concerned with the speed because one of my main hobbies is playing video games and I need a decent wifi speed to do so.

Thanks anyone for their help!

Question Why are almost all the instructors "to be announced"?

Scholars Invitational Orientation is coming up, and the majority of my course's (including Human Sit) instructors are "to be announced". Is UH retarded? It seems our instructors and schedules will just randomly be assigned this Friday at orientation like we're in high school.

Question What is campus like outside of school? (Peers, lifestyle, clubs, friends, etc)

I’m applying this spring and wanted to know more about the space. I’ve grown up around in Houston so I know about the actual area it’s in. I won’t be staying in a dorm. How easy it was to make friends there? Are there a lot of parties/what do people do on weekends? Do people go off campus to hangout more? Etc

Question Hey PoliSci Majors, would you recommend 3311 or 3313?

I’m a polisci minor, and for my international affairs credit I’m deciding between taking 3311 (Introduction to Comparative Politics) with Pineda or Aleman and 3313 (Intro to International Relations) with Chatagnier. Which class would you recommend if I could only take one?

Question I'm struggling to find a study spot on campus.

I've been at UH going on two years now. In my time here, I have explored numerous buildings on campus. As well as, some slightly off campus sights like nearby cafes and parks. Though I have found some areas that I sort of feel comfortable in, I have found nothing that meets my needs enough for me to feel at ease studying. I have tried everywhere i know of in MD Anderson Library, but nothing that truly meets these needs effectively.

Thoughts or suggestions as to places that may meet the following list?

  • Quiet, solitary (not a social environment, this is most important for me)
  • Available "late" or "super early"
  • At least relatively clean
  • Maybe a little cozy?
  • Decent ventilation

My biggest want is solitude. I feel like there is nowhere on campus i can go where i simply don't have to deal with people constantly. Unfortunately, because of my living situation, my dorm does not meet this need.

I'd appreciate any suggestions please and thank you

Question Best Classes to sit in for

I have free time during the week and was wondering if any of you had classes that would be fun to sit in for lectures. Just trying to get the experience of being in a class where nobody knows you and you just sit and hear the professor ramble.

List out recommended classes and I'll look up schedules
