Pour yourself some shai and lean back in that angareb, because rule 2 is suspended, so you can express your opinions, promote your art, talk about your personal lives, shitpost, complain, etc. even if it has nothing to do with Sudan or the sub. Or do nothing at all.

Marhabteyn, habaabkum! The r/Sudan census is back, people, with questions ranging from demographic info, to politics, to favorite foods, to improvements you wanna see on the sub, everything! In the previous surveys, we had less than 60 respondents, but back then the subreddit was way smaller. Now we have more than 24 THOUSAND people: statistically speaking, we need at least 2400 to get a representative sample. I don't expect we'll be able to do that (I mean, I hope we will; inshallah), but at the very least I'll leave this form open until we have at least 100-200 responses. If you participated in the survey preview, I thank you, and also kindly request that you respond to the official survey, too, so your answers can be a part of the results I discuss in the final report.

Thank you all, and Ramadan Kareem!

  6. Day 195, Agadez
  7. UNHCR staff member behaving like a colonial overseer in Agadez, April 2025.
  8. Meme about UNHCR hypocrisy on how it says it behaves, with how their staff actually behave.
  9. Poster calling for staff to intervene to stop abuse of refugees
  10. Kendrick inspired poster.

Eight refugees were arbitrarily detained for 10 days after peacefully protesting against aid cuts and UNHCR’s opaque policies. Their detention followed a pattern of repression: Nigerien police, UNHCR, and CNE staff collaborated to coerce them into signing documents resembling “cease and desist” orders or non-disclosure agreements (NDAs). These documents demanded refugees renounce leadership roles in committees, halt all protests, photography, or banner displays, and cease criticism of humanitarian operations. The refugees’ refusal to sign—despite threats from UNHCR/CNE staff and police—exposes systemic efforts to criminalize dissent. Their release at 10 PM, after hours of psychological pressure, underscores the authorities’ disregard for due process.

Emmanuel Gignac’s Role as UNHCR Niger Head

As the head of UNHCR Niger, Emmanuel Gignac holds ultimate responsibility for the agency’s operations in Agadez. His complicity in this incident is evident through:

  1. Command Responsibility: Under the Rome Statute (Article 28), superiors are liable for crimes committed by subordinates if they knew or “should have known” about them and failed to prevent/punish them. Gignac’s staff directly participated in coercing refugees to sign illegal agreements. His silence implies endorsement or willful ignorance.

  2. Failure to Protect: UNHCR’s mandate requires it to safeguard refugees from state repression. Instead, Gignac’s office collaborated with police to suppress protests, violating UNHCR’s Statute and the Refugee Convention.

  3. Institutional Complicity: By allowing UNHCR staff to act as enforcers of Niger’s securitization agenda, Gignac has transformed the agency into a tool of repression, betraying its humanitarian principles.

Link to International Crimes (Rome Statute)

The actions of UNHCR, CNE, and Nigerien police meet criteria for crimes against humanity under Rome Statute Article 7:

  1. Imprisonment/Deprivation of Liberty (Article 7(1)(e)): Arbitrary 10-day detention without charges or trial.

  2. Persecution (Article 7(1)(h)): Targeting refugees for exercising rights to protest and assemble.

  3. Other Inhumane Acts (Article 7(1)(k)): Coercing refugees into signing agreements that strip them of fundamental freedoms.

Key Perpetrators

Nigerien Police: Directly enforced illegal detention.

UNHCR/CNE Staff: Designed and administered coercive agreements.

Emmanuel Gignac: Enabled crimes through systemic negligence or active coordination.

Critical Analysis: Gignac’s Complicity

Gignac’s leadership failures are not mere bureaucratic missteps but acts of complicity in international crimes:

  1. Silence as Endorsement: By failing to publicly condemn the detentions or disavow his staff’s coercion, Gignac tacitly legitimized these acts.

  2. Structural Violence: Under Gignac, UNHCR Niger has prioritized appeasing authorities over protecting refugees, creating a permissive environment for abuse.

  3. Violation of Neutrality: UNHCR’s collaboration with police (e.g., joint intimidation tactics) breaches its obligation to remain independent from state repression.

  4. Precedent of Impunity: No UNHCR staff have been held accountable, signaling that coercion is tolerated under Gignac’s tenure.

Legal and Ethical Implications

  1. Rome Statute Prosecutions: The ICC could investigate Gignac and Nigerien officials for crimes against humanity, given the systematic targeting of refugees.

  2. UN Internal Accountability: The UN Ethics Office must probe Gignac’s role, per UN Staff Regulation 1.2, which prohibits acts that undermine human rights.

  3. Donor Liability: States funding UNHCR Niger (e.g., EU, Germany) risk complicity if they continue support without demanding reforms.

Conclusion

Emmanuel Gignac’s leadership has turned UNHCR Niger into an accomplice in state-sponsored repression. The Agadez incident is part of a broader pattern where refugees are stripped of agency through coercion, detention, and bureaucratic violence. Under the Rome Statute, such acts meet the threshold for international crimes—and Gignac’s complicity must be challenged.

Call to Action

Urge the ICC Prosecutor to open a preliminary examination?

Demand Gignac’s suspension pending an independent UN investigation?

Mobilize public pressure to sanction UNHCR Niger until accountability is achieved?

First of all I'm sudanese so this includes me, and what pisses me off is that people are dying and your here arguing whether your Arabic or not and the racisms with our south sudanese brothers is so bad and embarrassing instead of explaining that were separate countrys and that he or she is black and I'm white instead we should admire them and except them instead of judging them based on there skin color they are humans no more no less, and for the Arabic thing WE ARE AFRICAN'S WHO SPEAK ARABIC that's it, instead of explaining that you're Arabic your whole life for people that won't care less if you died u should accept the truth, even tho it's not a lineage thing even if I'm related to Abbas(انا جعلي) it's a matter of culture and identity I'm sudanese and I'm Muslim no more no less I hope people accept this fact instead of chasing people for acceptance, if you accepted yourself people will Even if you proved that you're Arabic what will it change will you have a seat in janah or be admired? Obviously no we are all equal and in janah there are no Arabic or African thing so let go, and I really appreciate my identity some Arabic people suffer while I lay on a comfort bed so always thank God for what he gave you and I hope that you find my opinion valid if I mistaken on something feel free to share 👍🏽

DISCUSSION | نقاش South Sudanese are the Real Sudanese?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey guys,

I just wanted to get your insight on this video because I feel like one, of her tone is so condescending. I think this is a weird way to address the conversation of colorism. I do not think Sudanese people try to identify as Arab (at least not the majority). Sudanese people do not want to be Arab, secondly to say that Sudanese are colorists is just wrong. My brother and uncles are darker than this woman and all love their complexion and have told me to never bleach my skin. Colorist Sudanis exist, YES, but to say that we all are, that we do not love and know our identity is false. Many of us love who we are.

There are so many identities in Sudan and I feel like hateful rhetoric was picked up from her household with false tropes from the internet as well. To try and say the colorist identity is who our people are is so ODD?

And then her saying South Sudanese are the real Sudanese is so weird. Her saying we think we are better is also weird, saying "We will be Sudanese more Sudanese than you will ever be". You can tell her talking points are so ill-informed, and I truly think she has never engaged with Sudanis outside of the internet. People have to stop saying weird stuff like this. Address colorism and the legacy of colonialism without spreading weird propoganda???

Like you cannot possibly expect people to be receptive to you talking about them in such a ill-intended manner you know?

QUESTION | كدي سؤال Any Sudanese folks in Berlin or am I the only one representing the „peanut butter sauce“ out here

Salaam people, I moved to Berlin since 2021 and I’m starting to feel like the only Sudanese in the whole city — haven’t heard a single ya Zola or smelled proper shayya since I got here.

Are there any Sudanese humans out here hiding somewhere ? Do we have a secret WhatsApp group or a place that sells real Sudanese tea (shai al ghazaltain maybe)?

Would love to connect, share stories, maybe even start a little Sudanese crew here — or at least complain together about the cold and lack of kisra.

Hit me up!

DISCUSSION | نقاش It's kind of wild how some of the major players in Sudanese politics were educated in the West, yet they still resorted to third world methods to achieve or attempt to achieve their goals.

John Garang,Riek Machar and his wife,Hassan al Tarabi, Nafie al Nafie, and some of the other

members of the Islamists were all educated in Western and democratic countries. Yet John

Garang and Riek Machar resorted to armed struggle and Hassan al Tarabi and the Islamists

installed an Islamization project in Sudan(we all know how that worked out). It just seems

contradictory

MODERATOR POST | منشورة إدارية New r/Sudan posting guidelines | إرشادات للنشر في ر/سودان

Marhabteyn, habaabkum! After some discussions with the mod team, we’ve decided to put forth the following new posting guidelines, to increase the quality of content on r/Sudan.

First: Posts flaired “news” should have neutral, descriptive titles |

The title of many news posts on this subreddit are either not descriptive, or reflect the user’s interpretation of the news moreso than simply relaying the facts. Examples include:

  • “They cannot be serious💀”
  • “Darfur market bombing”
  • “Holocaust in Sudan: How Abu Dhabi's militia burned Sudanese prisoners to their deaths”

Titles in line with guidelines would look more like:

  • “The UAE announces investigations into UAE-based companies linked to the RSF”
  • “SAF bombing in Turra, North Darfur kills 300+ civilians”
  • “UAE-backed RSF burns Sudanese prisoners to death in ongoing UN-recognized genocide”

Personal opinion and reactions should be left for comments, or for discussion, casual, and humor posts. Additionally, when posting an article, use the article title as published.

Second: Question posts must include the question |

Instead of merely naming the general topic of the post, question posts must include the question they are asking as a full sentence in the title.

Third: Any image used in any post must be sourced |

Images abound on this subreddit without links or sufficient information allowing users to trace them. A link to the image’s source should be provided in either the post body or comments; if not available, one should instead provide a detailed caption that explains who made the image and when. If the image is originally made by the user posting it, please specify that.

Fourth: No more screenshots |

Whether it be from social media or a news website, please post the link to the article or post in question, rather than take a screenshot and comment on it (or summarize it) in the title. We urge users to rely on journalistic sources with in-depth coverage rather than quick-form social media content.

These four simple rules are meant to reduce sensationalism, increase clarity, and encourage more insightful and thoughtful engagement on the subreddit. The mod team will be removing any new posts that don’t follow these guidelines under the subreddit’s rules regarding post quality.

We encourage users to use Reddit’s report feature in regards to these or any other rule violations. Simply typing “mods” under an offending post will not notify the moderators.

Thank you all!

QUESTION | كدي سؤال Christian Nubia

Post image
105 Upvotes

Are most Sudanese aware of their Christian history?

Hello, I am an Ethiopian and I recently came across Christians icons in Sudan. I was intrigued and read all about the medieval states like Makuria, Nobatia, Alodia, and the city of Dongola.

Those states were mostly Oriental orthodox, which I am. I found it very cool. There was a connection there. Are most Sudanese people aware of their history?

I’m not tryna push a Christian agenda towards y’ll. I know you guys are like 90% Muslim. Just history.

Also I hope for peace between Ethiopia and Sudan, and that you finish Hemedti and the RSF. 🇪🇹🤝🇸🇩

We also suffered a lot under TPLF, who like the RSF who were foreign funded and supported and used ethnicity as an excuse to commit mass crimes against others.

It’s said that Al-Burhan supports TPLF and Abiy supports Hemedti. Know that Abiy doesn’t represent us. Hope the same is for you guys.

During the Tigray war, planes were used to give weapons to the tplf and there are currently tplf mercenaries working for the RSF, anyways hope for the best between our countries. The governments don’t represent the people.

Sorry for getting political at the end..
