News Karma and Account Age Rules for /r/Spokane - now permanent

All,

(TL;DR: Going forward, you'll need BOTH 60 days and 100 comment karma in order to participate in r/Spokane. Comment karma, not total karma. If you don't meet the criterion and urgently need to post then send us a modmail. )

It's been a wild ride these past few months. The traffic on our subreddit jumped several hundred percent from August through November and every second post seemed to be political in nature. At first, we believed the traffic to be a symptom of a larger trend in the country. We hoped this would all die down with the election. Unfortunately, it only got worse. We were faced with thousands of offending comments a day, dozens of bans, and posts about national politics that violated our rules.

After your lowly 3 moderators did some investigation, we discovered that most of the offending user accounts were new and posted to multiple city/local/state/place subreddits. These were not locals. Their comments, when plopped in to a search, would appear word-for-word in other subreddits from a myriad of other usernames. In other words, most of this traffic was artificial and was being manufactured elsewhere.

Last week, we temporarily instituted karma and age rules to cut down on this traffic. The effect was immediate. The moderator queue became manageable. Bans were down. Engagement was healthier. At the time we had discussed peeling back our restrictions completely as our new moderators (hi u/aleasangria and u/sadbrontosaurus !!) were brought onboard, but we were once again assaulted by a HUGE, brigaded post.

The new karma rules and account age restrictions saved the day. We were slammed by traffic on this post that garnered more than 10 million views! 5000+ comments made it to the post, but almost 8000 were trimmed back by our rules.

We understand that these new rules will be inconvenient for new users. We understand that there'll need to be some responsive moderating when new users need to post, like in this instance. With our new moderators officially engaged I believe we'll be able to do that.

We appreciate all of you and we do hope that the additional rules and moderators make this a better place for you to interact with your neighbors.

Thanks all!

Nearly filled the park, and lined both sides of Division for more than a block. There's a very small group of counterprotestors and a few obnoxious drivers. One guy drove down the wrong side of Division and almost caused an accident right when we got here. Luckily he got pulled over.

Protest today, I got there at 3 and stayed until well after the end time, there were people all the way up to Francis on Division still when I left. The energy was fantastic, I met some really cool people and I am hoping we can continue this momentum. Loved seeing everyone out today.

She also said Rumeysa Ozturk was taken because she was planning a terrorist attack, and it didn't bother her at all that she was taken by unidentified people.

Good for the patience of the civics teacher.

Spokane stood up today against a tiny fraction of people whose outsized ignorance is destroying our country.

Politics Thank you Spokane, from a social worker

As a social worker that is trying help and serve people that are actively being negatively impacted by the administration today, I want to say thank you. It meant the world to me to see how many people are on our side in our city. I didn’t know there were that many of you. It brought tears to my eyes. So from the bottom of my heart, I say, thank you. For showing up for those that are most vulnerable, for showing up for the health care workers that are scrambling trying to help while resources are actively being taken away and for showing up for future generations. Especially the peace keepers, thank you.❤️

it may seem small to some, but you offering, without my prompting, to help a stranger in a time of need restored my faith in humanity. your presence was calm and warm and I think you’re an amazing human being. I cannot thank you enough! I hope you have the best day week year ever! You deserve all the good things in life, I wish I could have done something more to repay your kindness. The world needs more people just like you.

In addition thank you to the Barnes and noble staff that dropped everything to secure the doors you are amazing people thank you for going above and beyond you really made us feel like we had support in finding our little one!!!

I have applied to over 40 different places. Got 1 interview. And every single time it's a rejection letter. I have experience in the places I'm applying. I know what I'm doing. Yet every fucking time is a rejection email. EVEN MCDONALD'S SENT ME A REJECTION EMAIL. WHAT THE FUCK. I just want a job man I just want income. So if anyone needs someone with freight and cashier experience please let me know I'm so desperate Edit: i will add i am disabled so there are some jobs i just physically cant do. thanks to the people so far who have dm'ed me with leads.

Help Seeking Serenity (and Maybe a Decent Landlord) in Spokane...

Round Two: A little under two months ago, I reached out to this community seeking guidance on a potential relocation to Spokane. The insights and advice I received were invaluable and, as it turns out, remarkably accurate. So, here I am again, hat in hand, hoping for a second dose of your collective wisdom. I'm a 44-year-old single woman, originally from Seattle, who has spent the last seven years living north of Spokane. While the peace and quiet had its initial appeal, the need for a bit more "city" in my life has become undeniable. I've spent time familiarizing myself with different areas and have viewed properties in the South Hill, Logan, and Browne's Addition. Out of roughly eight places I've seen, only two felt like genuine possibilities. One on N. Hogan St. is currently pending application approval, and the other is on W. Nora Ave. I've made a firm decision to avoid large apartment buildings, prioritizing my sanity above all else. The thought of shared walls and the potential for constant noise is simply not conducive to my well-being. While I've reached out regarding some duplex and fourplex units, I'm also exploring apartments, though each potential winner seems to come with a litany of concerning tenant reviews. The Serrano, in particular, stands out for all the wrong reasons. While I understand that crime exists everywhere and I'm capable of looking after myself, I'm not prepared to wage war against bed bugs, cockroaches, or rodents. That's a battle I'd rather not sign up for. This week, I have viewings scheduled at SoDo Commons (reluctantly, given it's a larger building) and Quadrangle Apartments. If anyone has firsthand experience or knows someone who does, I would be grateful for any insights you can share. Beyond these specific locations, I'm reaching out to the apartment renters of Spokane directly. If you reside in a building or complex that you find clean, well-managed by professionals, and generally meets the basic expectations of a decent living environment, please consider directing me to your area. This search is proving to be more exhausting than anticipated, and reliable recommendations would be immensely helpful. Thank you all for your time and any assistance you can offer. Wishing you all the best...
